🎮 Turning play into a powerful learning tool: student Winston Ng, founder of Finute, is a finalist for the 🏆 Emerging Enterprise Award 2026, standing out from over 600 applicants. Co-presented by The Business Times and OCBC, the awards recognise promising young businesses across Asia that have demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit.

Winston founded Finute at just 18, driven by the belief that people learn better by doing than by being told. The is a simulations and gamification company that builds virtual worlds for education, enterprise and defence. It specialises in building digital worlds that recreate real-life environments and scenarios – from Singapore bus routes to police patrols, to make learning more interactive and engaging.

To date, Finute has worked with Singapore government agencies, including the Ministry of Defence, the Singapore Police Force and the Singapore Civil Defence Force, to develop interactive solutions that teach public preparedness, crisis response and scam awareness. Its proprietary AI pipeline generates 3D models from existing site data, helping to recreate real-world environments more efficiently.

An NTU Talent Scholar, Winston is also part of the Nanyang Business School Global Leaders Programme (NGL) and the NTU Honours College. He credits the programmes with providing valuable mentorship, broadening his perspectives and connecting him with peers beyond his own discipline.

Winston will also represent Singapore as a Global Youth Leader at the upcoming World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, China.

It can put institutional-grade data, tools and insights into the hands of everyday investors, giving them access to capabilities once available only to professionals,” said Moomoo CEO Jeyson Ng.

An alumnus, Jeyson shared his insights alongside fellow alumni Zack Yang, co-founder of FOMO Pay, and Yeow Yew Fei, Head of APAC Banks, Global Payments & Trade at BNY, at a panel discussion titled the “Future of FinTech in the Age of AI” during NTU Industry Day 2026, organised by NTU SPMS.

The event brought together industry leaders and professionals to examine how , and are transforming global markets.

The panellists discussed how AI is changing finance, what it means for financial systems and customers as well as the need for human judgement and accountability as AI systems become more autonomous.

Students also engaged with industry professionals, learn about developments in financial technology and explore pathways.

The collaboration aims to accurately and reliably determine the locations of robots, drones, and other autonomous systems in complex indoor and outdoor environments, even when signals are obstructed.

These technologies could be useful in sectors where autonomous systems must operate safely around people and critical infrastructure, including healthcare, airports, ports, manufacturing, logistics, smart cities, and emergency response operations. 🏥🚢📦

Through its Centre for Advanced Robotics Technology Innovation (CARTIN), NTU will contribute key expertise in , sensor fusion, localisation, and .

Minister Liisa-Ly Pakosta, Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs of the Republic of Estonia was welcomed at for a public lecture recently.

The lecture was a collaboration between NTU's Institute of Advanced Studies, Singapore and Asian Centre for Digital Cultures, in partnership with the Estonian Embassy in Singapore.

Like Singapore, Estonia is one of the most digitally-advanced societies in the world, with 100%-digitalised public services that are widely used and trusted by citizens and businesses alike.

🌊 Manta rays don’t fight the ocean. They move with it, adapting to its rhythm. This biomechanical insight helped inspire Waveity, an offshore wave developed by an team of students as part of an NTU Entrepreneurship Academy Business Venture Implementation module.

Built around an innovative two-degree-of-freedom design, Waveity harnesses energy from multiple modes of float motion. Its prototype has achieved up to 52% energy capture efficiency in experiments and hydrodynamic simulations. The team’s earned them the 🏆Silver Award in the International Student Track and 🏅Elevator Pitch Award at the HKUST-SINO One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2026.

Organised by HKUST Entrepreneurship Center and the Sino Group, the competition brought together young entrepreneurs using innovation and research to tackle real-world industry challenges and societal needs.

The team’s interdisciplinary mix of business, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering backgrounds brought different perspectives to the project. “We rarely looked at a problem the same way,” the team shared, and members built on one another’s ideas rather than defending their own.

The competition also marked their first time pitching beyond NTU. “We handled it by giving each member clear ownership of a section of the pitch and rebuilding our materials from scratch for the competition. That way, everyone was confident of their section,” they said. The team also credited NTUitive Deputy Director (Venture Building) Ms Kat Neo, Senior Lecturer Dr Claire Bi and Mr Dennis Low from NTUpreneur for their encouragement and guidance throughout the competition.

Another NTU team, BAEPR, received the 🏅People’s Choice Award. The team is developing a 🩺 temporary treatment platform that combines wireless power, electrical stimulation, targeted drug delivery and bioresorbable materials to address obesity and related metabolic risks through targeted stimulation at specific acupuncture points.

NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine Assoc Prof Joanne Ngeow has been named the winner in the Senior Scientist category of the ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women 2026.

A clinician-scientist, Assoc Prof Ngeow uses and to deepen our understanding of inherited cancers and improve . "As a clinician and scientist, I am driven by the distance between what we can discover and what we can change for patients. This award is a tremendous encouragement to keep working across disciplines and borders to close that gap," she said.

Presented at the 90th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation in Da Nang, this year’s award celebrates female scientists harnessing to advance inclusive and strengthen healthcare resilience across ASEAN.

🔬🤖 Building trust in in the age of AI: More than 200 members of the research community gathered at ’s Trust in Research Carnival 2026 to explore how responsible use can strengthen research integrity.

During a panel discussion, NTU Deputy President and Provost Prof Christian Wolfrum and Vice President (AI and Digital Economy) Prof Luke Ong stressed the importance of human judgement and accountability in AI-enabled research.

Prof Wolfrum noted that paper mills, purchased authorship and fabricated data existed long before generative AI. “It is a misconduct, it remains a misconduct, no matter if AI is involved or not,” he said, adding that universities must uphold ethical standards and act decisively against misconduct to remain places of trust.

Prof Ong highlighted AI’s potential to strengthen research integrity while urging researchers to anticipate potential misuse. Stressing that “academic freedom comes with academic responsibility”, he encouraged researchers to “ask the awkward questions early” and put safeguards in place.

Participants also explored interactive booths to learn about , data management, ethics and safeguards through engaging, hands-on activities.

Trading perspectives for winning moves: Two students, Richard Chen and Ethan Tan, and their team claimed victory 🏆 at the International Trading Case Competition 2026, organised by the Centre of Excellence International Trading and NTU International Trading Club in partnership with Trafigura.

The competition drew 283 students from six universities, challenging participants to tackle a simulated trading scenario based on real-world industry demands and present their recommendations to industry leaders.

Working with peers from other universities, the winning team proposed how a fuel importer could respond to import constraints and developed an oil trade idea built around geopolitical supply risks.

The team's diverse academic backgrounds and internship experiences proved valuable. Members took on different roles, from assessing the flexibility of their trading strategy and calculating potential profits and losses to evaluating opportunity costs and considering opposing viewpoints.

“We had two key takeaways. First, commodities trading is driven by real-world events, not just numbers. While models help inform decisions, they cannot replace market awareness. Second, in a dynamic industry like commodities trading, every decision involves trade-offs. The key is to weigh the options and identify the most favourable outcome given the circumstances,” shared the team.

students and alumni have been recognised at the President’s Volunteerism & Philanthropy Awards 2026 for their efforts to uplift communities and create positive change.

NTU School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering undergrad Ashsufi Hussin received recognition in the People of Good (Youth) category for founding the BrightGuides Programme, a free mathematics tuition initiative for less-privileged Primary and Secondary school students. The initiative supports students from less-privileged backgrounds. It has since grown to more than 40 volunteers helping over 25 students.

In the Communities of Good (Groundup) category, 📸 Project Obscura, co-founded by School of Humanities, NTU Singapore alumna Rachel Goh and NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine undergrad Clarence Chua with Ethan Tan, uses photography to preserve memories and share the stories of underserved communities. To date, it has delivered more than 50,000 photographs, reaching an estimated 10,000 people.

🤰💡 Advancing the future of maternal : Former US First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, who chairs the Milken Institute Women’s Health Network, recently visited co11ab Novena at NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine with Esther Krofah, the institute’s Executive Vice President of Health. The Milken Institute is a nonprofit think tank that brings together researchers, funders and innovators to accelerate progress in healthcare, including women’s health.

During the visit, they met the team behind Biorithm, a Singapore startup co-founded by alumnus Amrish Nair that is developing remote maternal monitoring technology.

They discussed the potential impact of this on mothers and society, as earlier warnings could help prevent up to one in four maternal deaths. They also discussed the importance of investing in women’s health, making more accessible and how to bring innovative solutions to the women who need them most.

Youths may not always speak openly about their struggles. Now, and the Institute of Mental Health Singapore have developed an ( ) framework to detect early risk in youths from short samples of casual, spontaneous speech. This could help identify vulnerable youths before clinical symptoms escalate.

Called LEMon-AID, the framework combines emotional signals identified by ( ) with traditional to improve risk detection. In a study involving 429 participants aged 14 to 29, it achieved up to 93% sensitivity in identifying at-risk youths. Published in npj Mental Health Research, this is the first reported study in Singapore to focus specifically on early psychosis risk among youths using LLMs, a form of AI trained to analyse and generate human language.

The framework analyses subtle emotional patterns in natural conversation without relying on people to explicitly disclose their mental health symptoms. It also provides clear explanations for its predictions, helping clinicians better understand the AI’s reasoning when evaluating potential risks.

The framework is being explored for potential clinical applications. Further research and real-world validation are needed before it can be used in practice. These findings point towards new possibilities for .

💙 Starting conversations on and breaking stigma: ’s undergrad Ethan Sim was named the Student Wellbeing Champion (Individual Category) at the inaugural NTU Wellbeing Champions Awards Ceremony. Held during the launch of University Wellbeing Office’s October WellFest, the event kicked off the NTU's month-long celebration of wellbeing.

As the chairperson of NTU Welfare Services Club’s Regular Service Project for Mental Health, Ethan leads volunteers and advocates for by sparking conversations.

His advocacy stems from his own experiences with counselling. After facing academic struggles in secondary school and burnout during National Service, he sought help and learnt the importance of seeking support. Now, he hopes to help others feel comfortable doing the same.

From engaging service users at the Institute of Mental Health to contributing to outreach events for the community such as Here4U, Mind Matters and October WellFest, Ethan believes meaningful advocacy is not about having all the answers, but creating opportunities for people to learn from one another. He finds it fulfilling when people share how his insights have given them a new perspective.

“When I ran peer-support training for my club members, they came with many questions: why, how, what if? Those conversations are what advocacy seems like to me. It's not about having all the answers, it's about inspiring dialogue and encouraging conversations,” he shared.

His volunteering journey has also taught him to look beyond mental health diagnoses and recognise each person’s resilience. Through these connections, Ethan hopes to build a more understanding and supportive community where everyone feels heard and empowered to seek help.

At the October WellFest launch, NTU also signed a Psychological First Aid Training Partnership Agreement with Singapore Red Cross and Visionary Schoolmen, reaffirming its commitment to fostering caring and supportive communities within and beyond NTU.

Fresh off a nomination for Best Live Action Short Film at the 63rd Golden Horse Awards, alumnus and lecturer Ivan Tan is making his mark on the international stage!

His film "She Said 《她说》" will make its world premiere at the 31st Busan International Film Festival. 14 years ago, Ivan went to the 부산국제영화제 Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) as a student. Now, he returns as a .

Renowned actress Fan Bingbing plays Ling, a migrant worker who reveals her past as a love scam caller when her boyfriend proposes. The film is one of 10 films chosen from 2,258 submissions for the Wide Angle: Asian Short Film Competition.

Ivan now teaches digital film at his alma mater, 's Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information. He credits an Asian Film History module taught by filmmaker Tan Bee Thiam with sparking his interest in cinema. "It was through this module that I discovered the possibilities of cinema, without which, I would not have become a filmmaker," he says.

What does it take to turn an idea into a real-world innovation? 💡

For Singapore Polytechnic team BuilderLab, generative AI is bridging the gap between ideas and physical products. Their platform enables anyone without engineering expertise to transform simple text descriptions into 3D product designs and connect with manufacturers to bring their concepts to life.

The innovation earned BuilderLab the S$100,000 top prize 🏆 at the Chua Thian Poh Pinnacle Prize, a national student innovation and entrepreneurship competition organised by .

NTU student innovators also made their mark, securing second and third place:

🥈 Nexus Ionics received S$50,000 for developing a potentially lower-cost catalyst that could make green hydrogen production more affordable.

🥉 NatureRisk took home S$30,000 for its AI-powered platform that helps businesses assess environmental risks, from flooding and water scarcity to biodiversity loss.

Supported by the Chua Thian Poh Entrepreneurship Education Fund, the competition provides winning teams with mentorship and industry support to strengthen their business models and bring their innovations closer to commercialisation.

🧠💙 Stepping up for : On this , we’re reminded that meaningful connections begins with simply showing up, listening and being there for one another.

Every week, volunteers from Welfare Services Club’s Regular Service Project for Mental Health visit the Institute of Mental Health to spend time with service users through handicrafts, games, sports and festive activities. Beyond these activities, they build friendships, offer companionship and support physical and .

For volunteer Shafi Md Yunos, the experience is deeply personal. Having navigated his own mental health struggles with the support of friends, he hopes to be there for others facing similar challenges or who feel they have no one to turn to.

One encounter, in particular, stayed with him. During a clayscaping activity, a participant created a beach in a jar as it was where she felt most free. Although her mental health challenges made it difficult to visit the beach, she continued to hold on to hope, taking each day as it came.

Her resilience left a lasting impression on Shafi. “The fact that she is still hopeful despite whatever she has been through and is going through shows how strong she truly is. I was inspired by her resilience, and up till now, I always make it a point to look at the bright side of things, even when things are not looking too well,” he shared.

Through his volunteering journey, Shafi has learnt that supporting others can be a two-way street. The connections he built have also taught him valuable lessons about resilience, hope and the importance of looking out for others.

His regular visits to the wards have also made him more confident in having heartfelt conversations about mental health. As Shafi says, “Everyone has their own struggles, and we all deserve help and support to get through them.”

Beyond volunteering, RSPMH students also champion mental wellbeing within the community through initiatives such as this month's Escape Room Challenge at October WellFest.

Can understanding how fat cells age uncover new ways of treating ? 🔬

and pharmaceutical firm Boehringer Ingelheim are collaborating on two research projects to explore new approaches to treating obesity.

The first project will investigate whether long-lasting obesity-related changes in fat tissue can be reversed to restore its ability to regulate energy balance effectively.

The other investigates the therapeutic potential of mitochondrial-derived peptides, a relatively new class of signalling molecules produced by mitochondria, the structures in cells responsible for generating energy. Researchers will study how these peptides influence metabolic processes linked to obesity.

The research is co-led by NTU Deputy President and Provost Prof Christian Wolfrum, an internationally acclaimed expert in , and Dr Anton Pekcec, Director of Cardio-Renal-Metabolic Diseases Research at Boehringer Ingelheim.

The collaboration brings together NTU’s research expertise in , ageing and with Boehringer Ingelheim’s expertise in drug discovery and development.

Under the joint programme between NTU and the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion, PhD candidates will work with supervisors from both institutions in the fields of , energy and green chemical processes.

NTU and the Max Planck Society will also explore new pathways for collaboration through the Max Planck Schools. The partnership will provide undergraduate and postgraduate students with opportunities to gain research experience at NTU and Max Planck Institutes in Germany, as well as participate in research training and academic programmes.

The partnerships were formalised at a ceremony attended by NTU Deputy President and Provost Prof Christian Wolfrum and MPG Secretary General Dr Simone Schwanitz.
