Engineering empathy: As an engineer, graduate Evonne Ng is no stranger to solving problems. But as the Renaissance Engineering Programme (REP) valedictorian and recipient of the Koh Boon Hwee Scholars Award, she believes some of the most meaningful solutions begin with people.

During her time at NTU, Evonne helped re-establish REP's partnership with the Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC), launching the Buddy Tutoring programme that paired student volunteers with underprivileged primary school children through one-to-one mentoring.

One student in particular left a lasting impression. They first met during the COVID-19 pandemic, when all tutoring sessions were held online. Despite the challenges of remote learning, the young student attended every session, eager to learn and always willing to share what was happening in her life.

These conversations reminded the grad that mentoring is about more than academics. It is about building trust, confidence and meaningful connections.

Now an Artificial Intelligence Engineer at HTX, Evonne hopes to continue applying technology to solve real-world challenges while never losing sight of the people it is meant to serve.

From exploring different engineering fields at to pursuing a career in San Francisco’s AI startup scene, Jewel Aw has been guided by curiosity and a willingness to create her own path. 🌎

Through NTU’s Renaissance Engineering Programme (REP), Jewel had the space to discover where her interests lay before choosing computer engineering for its mix of software and hardware training. Internships spanning machine learning, cybersecurity, AI and solutions architecture then gave her hands-on experience across different areas of tech.

Her outlook shifted during her year at UC Berkeley, an overseas exchange made possible by REP. Being close to Silicon Valley introduced Jewel to an ambitious startup culture, where she saw people turning bold ideas into reality. When she returned to NTU, a digital strategy course at Nanyang Business School helped her put those observations into context, showing how emerging technologies and fresh thinking could enable smaller companies to challenge established players.

Together, these experiences helped Jewel define what she wanted from her career: software engineering that combined technical depth with real-world impact, in an environment where she could learn quickly and take on greater responsibility.

Today, the grad is a software engineer in San Francisco’s AI startup scene, where her work involves data for reinforcement learning, an area of machine learning that uses feedback to help AI models improve their reasoning and responses.

“You have to be curious and hungry. That’s the most sustainable form of drive,” she reflects.

🎓 From being believed in to becoming : Sometimes, changing a life begins with something as simple as believing in someone. 💛

For graduate Francesca Wah, that belief began with the teachers who saw potential in her before she saw it in herself. Growing up in a low-income family, she experienced firsthand how education could open doors, build confidence and change the course of a child’s life.

Years later, as a , mother and , she continues to pay that belief forward.

After serving in roles spanning pastoral care, curriculum leadership and policy, Francesca pursued the Master of (Curriculum & Teaching) at ’s National Institute of Education (NIE). The programme helped her become a more reflective leader – one who pauses to ask who benefits, whose voices may be overlooked and how decisions will affect students and teachers.

Beyond the classroom, she founded BLESS to support children living in rental flats, reinforcing a lesson she carries into her work every day: talent is universal, but opportunities are not.

Being named valedictorian marks a full-circle moment. 🎓 For Francesca, this is not an individual honour, but one to be shared by the teachers, classmates and family members who believed in her along the way.

Compounding kindness 💖: One opportunity can change a life. For Nanyang Business School graduate Sean Ho, it became an opportunity to change many more.

When Sean's family faced financial hardship during the pandemic, an tuition fee scholarship gave him the chance to pursue his university education without the weight of financial uncertainty.

That opportunity paved the way for many others. Sean later received the Columbia "Nissi" Scholarship, established by Kenneth Tan and Loo Hui Su, which enabled him to fully immerse himself in campus life and broaden his horizons through an overseas exchange at ESSEC Business School in Paris, France.

Inspired by Kenneth and Hui Su's spirit of paying it forward 🫶, Sean embraced the same philosophy. Through Nanyang Capital, he mentored 15 students across four cohorts in equity valuation, stock-pitching and career development, helping these aspiring finance professionals build the technical expertise and confidence to break into the industry.

As he begins his next chapter, Sean hopes to continue creating a ripple effect by mentoring students facing similar barriers, just as others once believed in and supported him.

His dedication to uplifting others was recognised with the 🏅 Koh Boon Hwee Scholars Award for .

📸💖 Photography with a great purpose: For School of Humanities grad Rachel Goh, photography is more than about capturing moments. She co-founded Project Obscura, a youth-led ground-up initiative after recognising that charities and social service agencies often lacked the time and resources for professional photography. Their goal was simple: to make professional accessible to underprivileged communities.

From just three volunteers, Project Obscura has grown into a community of 250 photographers from 92 schools and organisations. Together, they have partnered with more than 110 organisations, benefited over 10,000 beneficiaries, and helped non-profit organisations save significantly on photography costs.

Project Obscura is also empowering the next generation through photography. Rachel and the team have mentored children and teens from REACH Community Services through free photography workshops and photo walks, equipping them with the skills and confidence to tell their own stories. Their photographs will be showcased at an exhibition later this year.

One encounter reaffirmed everything Rachel has hoped Project Obscura would become. To sustain its pro bono work, Project Obscura undertakes low bono photography assignments. When Rachel invited one of the volunteers for low bono work, the volunteer replied that she still wanted to help with the pro bono projects because she hadn't joined Project Obscura to get paid. Rachel was heartened to see that the volunteers have become a community united by a shared desire to help others.

For her sustained contributions to the underprivileged, the grad has been awarded the President's Prize for Community Service, which recognises individuals whose dedication to service has made a meaningful difference to society.

President Prof Ho Teck Hua welcomed Technical University of Munich (TUM) President Prof Thomas Hofmann and his team to the NTU campus today to explore new opportunities to deepen collaboration in research, education and innovation, building on NTU and TUM's shared strengths as leading technological universities.

Their discussions focused on strengthening the partnership through the power of place, people, programmes and intellectual property.

This includes creating more opportunities for researchers, entrepreneurs and innovators to collaborate across both universities' campuses and innovation ecosystems, deepening academic exchanges among faculty, researchers and students, exploring initiatives such as Double Master's programmes in disciplines where NTU and TUM are recognised as global leaders, and strengthening collaboration in research translation and commercialisation.

Mastering the art of lifelong learning🎓: What began as a personal commitment to becoming a better teacher has grown into a lifelong mission to help others learn and flourish.

For Frankie Leow, every programme at the National Institute of Education (NIE) has been another chapter of the same journey. After completing master's programmes in curriculum and teaching, and special education, the Senior Teacher for Special Educational Needs at Bedok Green Secondary School (BGSS Buzz) has now embarked on yet another at – the Master of Education (High Ability Studies) programme – as he continues to deepen his understanding of how educators can nurture every learner's potential. “Every learner deserves opportunities to be recognised, challenged, supported, and empowered to reach their fullest potential,” he reveals as the source of his motivation.

Along the way, he discovered that perhaps the most rewarding part of his NIE path wasn't simply what he learnt, but how that learning extended beyond his own classroom. Through research, mentoring, conference presentations and professional learning, he found opportunities to contribute to the growth of fellow educators, multiplying the impact on countless students.

"To me, lifelong learning is about continually growing so that we can better serve others," he reflects. "Learning finds its greatest purpose when it enables us to make a positive difference in the lives of others."

For Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI) graduate Tay Yu Xuan, cinematography and wushu are two sides of the same creative coin. Instead of keeping them separate, he uses both disciplines to explore his lifelong love of expression and storytelling.

"In wushu, we learn to use our routines to demonstrate attacking and defensive movements," Yu Xuan shared. "I find that there is a similar artistic freedom in both wushu and cinematography where we use movements or visuals to tell a story."

His passion for wushu and filmmaking started at a young age, becoming inspired after witnessing his primary school seniors perform during celebrations, getting hooked on Chinese martial arts movies, as well as watching documentaries with his father. These cultivated his interest in both expressing himself through wushu movements and through making videos on his sister's DSLR camera.

At , pursuing these twin interests meant having to balance five gruelling training sessions a week with schoolwork and videography projects. Fortunately, receiving the inaugural NTU Talent Scholarship in 2024 relieved some of the pressure, helping with his tuition fees and supporting his holistic development through various workshops.

His dedication paid off big this year as Yu Xuan clinched the Gold Medal for Men’s Sun-style Taijiquan at the 5th World Taijiquan Championships 2026 in Bulgaria. He also got the chance to be a Director of Photography on a short narrative film for the first time, developing an original story as part of his Final-Year Project.

Now a full-time athlete with SportSG, Yu Xuan is focusing all his efforts on the upcoming Asian Games 2026. Join us in congratulating him on his graduation and wishing him all the best for his future! 🎓💪

🎬 From filmmaker and entrepreneur to community advocate, Jermaine Yeo has never limited herself to just one path.

The graduate entered ’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information without a filmmaking background, but found a supportive environment where she could experiment, make mistakes and grow. With encouragement from her professors and batchmates, she took on documentary projects and overseas learning experiences in Busan and Manila that deepened her understanding of storytelling – not just as a creative craft, but as a way to document lives, ask difficult questions and bring overlooked experiences to light.

Beyond filmmaking, Jermaine co-founded The Craft Palette with her sister. What began as a small idea in her bedroom grew into a creative brand centred on spreading joy through colour and creativity. The experience taught her to stop doubting herself and give her ideas a chance.

Her time with WeeVolunteer also left a lasting impact. By serving on the ground, listening and building relationships with different communities, Jermaine learnt to see people beyond statistics or assumptions – an outlook that continues to shape both the filmmaker she hopes to become and the stories she wants to tell.

Her willingness to keep saying “yes”, even when she felt doubtful or underqualified, culminated in receiving the 🏆 Koh Boon Hwee Scholars Award for . For Jermaine, the recognition was a reminder that every “yes” had been worth it.

As she begins her next chapter, Jermaine hopes to continue serving the communities that shaped her and create documentaries that encourage people to look deeper, ask more questions and better understand the world around them. Her advice to current students? Keep checking in with yourself, stay close to the people and work that bring you meaning, and never lose sight of why you started. ✨

When it came time to choose a university, NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) grad Loh Pei Yi was considering accepting offers to study natural sciences and chemistry from various universities, including Cambridge. That all changed when her father underwent a heart procedure, leaving her helpless as she was unable to understand his medical reports and hence reassure him.

She decided to study medicine instead and accepted an offer from LKCMedicine, beginning a lifelong pursuit of providing care and protecting the vulnerable.

That commitment found expression in Project Gift of Song, a youth-led movement Pei Yi co-founded that celebrates life with a love of . It pairs young musicians with terminally ill patients to co-create musical pieces expressing their life stories, while using familiar songs to create accessible spaces for members of the public to reflect on mortality. Inspired by how music helped her late grandaunt briefly regain recognition in her final days, Project Gift of Song has mobilised more than 80 volunteers and raised over $70,000 in support of in five years.

Supported by the Student Affairs Office, she also revived the defunct NTU Civil Defence Lionhearter Club. As founding President, she helped equip students with vital CPR and AED skills, culminating in a Safety and Security Innovation Festival that drew around 1,000 members of the public.

During her geriatrics posting as a student, Pei Yi learnt how complex, yet deeply human, understanding an older person’s healthcare needs could be. This inspired Elderwise, a conversational tool co-developed with Ajentik AI that reduces the burden of information gathering for and surface important vulnerabilities earlier, optimising the process of conducting comprehensive geriatric assessments. The team brought Elderwise to the Harvard Health Systems Innovation Lab Hackathon, where it was selected as a Singapore Hub Winner and placed among the global Top 10 teams.

Today, Pei Yi graduates with five Gold Medals and four Book Prizes, including the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal as her cohort’s top graduate, alongside the President’s Prize for Community Service. Across clinical care, community service and innovation, she sees excellence not as a destination, but as a consequence of being anchored in her purpose to protect the health and well-being of vulnerable people, at the bedside and beyond it.

Pei Yi now continues that journey as a House Officer in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Sengkang General Hospital where she is excited to transition from a classroom setting to assuming real responsibilities for patients in Singapore's healthcare system. 🏘️ Sometimes, the most meaningful lessons come from the people we meet in unexpected circumstances. For graduate Muhammad Syafiq Bin Haniss, one of those lessons came while leading an Muslim Society project to refresh rental flats for low-income residents. "I met people who needed help but were too afraid to accept it," Syafiq shared.

The experience gave him a new perspective on what it means to serve others – with empathy, through proactive acts of kindness, and without expecting anything in return.

While pursuing his degree in Mechanical Engineering, Syafiq channelled his passion for serving others into projects with real social impact, including helping to develop an intelligent assistive walking cane for elderly users and people with disabilities, and co-organising NTU's Best Foot Forward campus run to raise funds for student bursaries.

He is now a constituency manager with the People's Association, where he continues to put that purpose into practice through his work with residents.

Do you remember being young and fascinated by planes? ✈️ For Subramanian Alagappan, his first ever flight sparked a lifelong fascination with how aircraft stay in the air.

Today, that curiosity has led him to the cutting edge of aviation technology at the NTU School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. As part of his studies in computational fluid dynamics, Subramanian joined a pioneering project under Prof James Wang to help build Singapore’s first locally designed and built electric vertical take-off and landing ( ) vehicle. His work focused on refining complex aerodynamic calculations for a brand-new wing configuration.

His achievements didn't stop in the lab – Subramanian also led his team to win first prize in the Design and Innovation category at the school’s Engineering, Innovation and Design competition. The most important part of this experience for him wasn't winning, it was gaining a vital lesson from his professor: "Keep it simple but effective."

"At the time, I didn't fully grasp what that meant, but now I realise that true innovation isn't about how fancy a solution is, but how practical it is," Subramanian said. "The size of the solution doesn't matter as much as the size of the problem you are solving."

Having already contributed to intellectual property during a successful internship at Entegris Asia, this brilliant graduate is returning there full-time as a Modelling and Simulation Scientist to reach even greater heights.

❤️Compassion is the best : Every doctor carries lessons from those who came before them.

For grad Colin Goh, one of those role models was Dr Hong Qiantai, his clinical tutor during a vascular surgery clinical posting at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Despite juggling a busy surgical practice and having to meet a multitude of patients on ward rounds, Dr Hong always found time to teach, involve students and check in on their learning. When other tutors were tied up, he stepped in to fill the gaps. "He taught me that being busy and having long days should never be an excuse, and that we should always strive to be good role models to others, especially in the medical community," Colin shared.

That lesson stayed with him throughout his time at NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine). Colin co-founded ✨LKCMedicine's Make-A-Wish local community involvement project, which helps fulfil the wishes of children with critical illnesses, giving them hope and strength throughout their treatment journey. He also supported healthcare and sanitation initiatives in Cambodia through Project Chhnang, volunteered as a first aider on wheels with Project RED, and contributed to research in ophthalmology and neurology – even presenting his work at an international conference in Canada.

His dedication to serving others also saw him named valedictorian and recipient of the 🏅Koh Boon Hwee Scholars Award, one of NTU's highest honours which recognises exceptional graduating students for their outstanding and contributions to society.

Now a 👨‍⚕️, Colin hopes to inspire and care for others with the same compassion and generosity that shaped his own journey. Bravo, Dr Colin! 🎓

💪Stronger than setbacks: A year-and-a-half away from her studies. Multiple surgeries. Countless moments that could have derailed her plans.

But Myat Thiri Mon never let go of one goal – returning to to complete her Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and confidently stride across the 🎓 stage.

After making a full recovery, she came back to campus, transitioned from part-time to full-time studies, and, with the unwavering support of her professors, achieved the milestone she had been working towards.

To Myat, this graduation represents far more than an academic qualification. "Looking back today, graduating from NTU means much more than earning a degree. It represents resilience, hope, and the belief that even when life takes an unexpected turn, it is possible to overcome challenges and achieve your goals," she said.

Inspired by her own health journey, the grad now hopes to pursue research at the intersection of biomedical engineering and semiconductor manufacturing, developing technologies that improve and enhance lives.

Finding the perfect balance 🚴: As Co-Founder and Managing Director of Bikemart SG, Tan Jiayu has spent years building a specialty cycling business from the ground up – achieving Lazada Top 5 seller status and securing exclusive distribution for various brands.

But keeping a growing business in motion also prompted a bigger question: how could he move beyond the operator's seat and view a venture through an investor's lens? That curiosity led him to 's Master of Science in Technopreneurship and Innovation Programme (MSc TIP). To fully engage with the programme's academic rigour while still keeping an eye on scaling the business, however, he needed more than just sheer determination.

The resourceful graduate embraced automation and AI to streamline his day-to-day operations, freeing up the time he needed to fully focus on the programme. His innovative spirit paid off, earning him the MSc TIP Entrepreneurship Study Award.

Reflecting on the experience and how it has benefitted him, Jiayu shared: “The programme – particularly the Mock Investment Committee and Design Thinking modules – gave me the analytical and strategic frameworks to complement my hands-on experience. MSc TIP has been the bridge between operator and investor, and I'm grateful to NTU Entrepreneurship Academy for the support along that journey."

Equally valuable were the friendships he built with passionate, like-minded people from all over the world. “It’s inspiring to be surrounded by fellow aspiring entrepreneurs who dream big and push boundaries.”

🎯 Chasing her dreams, one shot at a time: For Materials Engineering graduate and national pistol shooter Heng Jun Huei, years of hard work have led to remarkable achievements both on and off the shooting range. From representing Singapore and at international competitions to graduating with the 🏅 NSL Gold Medal for the best overall academic performance in her final year, her accomplishments reflect the dedication she has poured into every pursuit.

Behind these achievements were years of commitment and resilience. It took Jun Huei three years to earn a place on Singapore's national youth shooting team. As the junior category age limit drew closer, there were moments when she wondered if the opportunity would come. But she never stopped believing in herself or putting in the work.

Along the way, she made the most of life at NTU beyond her studies. Through the NTU Wushu Club, a summer exchange programme and organising the NTU Invitational Shoot, she challenged herself to step outside her comfort zone, growing as a leader, teammate and problem-solver.

Her undergraduate research experience also uncovered a new passion. Inspired by the opportunity to ask deeper questions and explore the "why" behind engineering, Jun Huei chose to continue that journey as a PhD student in NTU's School of Materials Science and Engineering.

As she looks ahead, Jun Huei has her sights locked on another lifelong dream: representing Singapore at the Olympic Games.
