As populations across the world continue to age, promoting good oral health for older adults has never been more important 🧓👴👵.

On 24 July 2026, the ASEAN University Network – Geriatric Dentistry Thematic Network (AUN-GDENT) was officially established to advance collaborative education, research, and capacity building in geriatric dentistry across the region.

NUS Dentistry is proud to be one of the four founding institutions, alongside Universiti Malaya, Universitas Indonesia, and Khon Kaen University. The network was jointly spearheaded by Professors Jacob John, Linda Kusdhany, Waranuch Pitiphat, and Associate Professor Mun Loke Wong.

Guided by a five-year strategic plan, AUN-GDENT aims to strengthen inter-professional education, inform policy, and foster collaborative oral healthcare for older adults across ASEAN. Together with partners across the region, the network will work towards improving oral health and enhancing the quality of life of older adults — because healthy smiles support healthy ageing 😊.

🤝 Building connections, creating smiles, and making a difference.

On 2 July 2026, NUS Dentistry was delighted to partner with Solventum and MINDS for a meaningful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) event centred on inclusion, oral health education and community engagement.

From interactive oral health education sessions to creative hands-on activities, the day brought together Solventum volunteers, MINDS clients, and members of the NUS Dentistry community to learn, connect and share memorable moments. The laughter, creativity and friendships formed throughout the day were a heartwarming reminder of the positive impact that collaboration and kindness can have.

A heartfelt thank you to Solventum and MINDS for their partnership and support. We look forward to many more opportunities to strengthen our community together.

Helping children feel comfortable in the dental chair is one of the most challenging skills for dental students to master. Effective behaviour guidance requires confidence, empathy, strong communication, and the ability to adapt in real time. 🦷

A new study by our academicians, published in JMIR Medical Education, found that dental students' behaviour management skills can be assessed accurately using text transcripts alone, with results comparable to full video-based evaluations.

This innovative approach could make clinical teaching more efficient and scalable, enabling educators to provide personalised, high-quality feedback while reducing the time needed to review lengthy clinical recordings.

Associate Professor Hu Shijia, one of the study's researchers, shared, "These findings allow us to enhance training for our dental students by providing more personalised and insightful feedback on their interactions with young patients. With a better understanding of each student's needs, we can better tailor our training to help them grow into more confident and effective dentists, ultimately providing better care for young patients."

Looking ahead, transcript-based assessments could pave the way for AI-powered feedback and even a future "virtual mentor" to support clinical training, helping students strengthen their communication skills while allowing educators to focus on higher-level mentorship.

Congratulations to Drs Ishreen Kaur, Gabriel Lee, Associate Professor Hu Shijia, and the research team on this achievement, and on securing a Ministry of Education (MOE) Tertiary Education Research Fund grant to further explore the use of AI in dental education! 👏

🦷 Bringing the dental community together to learn, share and grow

On 17 May, nearly 150 dental professionals, researchers, educators, students, and industry partners came together for the inaugural NUS Dentistry–NUCOHS Clinical Dentistry and Research Symposium (CDARS) organised by NUS Centre for Advanced Dental Education (CADE). The full-day symposium featured an inspiring line-up of local and international experts who shared the latest evidence-based developments and practical insights across a wide range of clinical disciplines.

Beyond the lectures, participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions, explored the latest dental technologies at the industry exhibition, and exchanged ideas with peers from across the profession. The symposium concluded with an interactive panel discussion on managing medically complex patients, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in delivering high-quality patient care.

As part of the inaugural NUS Dentistry–NUCOHS Clinical Dentistry and Research Symposium (CDARS), dental professionals and clinicians came together on 16 May 2026 for an immersive workshop on the Principles of Flap Design & Bone Grafting in Regenerative Dental Surgery.

Featuring insights from renowned local and international experts, participants explored the latest advancements in guided bone regeneration before putting theory into practice through hands-on training in flap design, membrane handling, bone grafting, and suturing techniques. The workshop equipped attendees with evidence-based knowledge and practical skills to enhance patient care in regenerative dental surgery.

✨ Showcasing innovation. Celebrating discovery. Inspiring the future of dentistry.

On 16 May, NUS Dentistry Centre for Advanced Dental Education welcomed graduate students, researchers and clinicians to the Graduate Symposium, held in conjunction with the inaugural NUS Dentistry–NUCOHS Clinical Dentistry and Research Symposium (CDARS).

The symposium provided a platform for graduate students to present their research, exchange ideas with peers and experts, and celebrate excellence in scientific discovery through the oral presentation competition. From emerging research to meaningful discussions, the event highlighted how innovation and collaboration continue to advance clinical dentistry and improve patient care.

Congratulations to all our presenters and award recipients for their outstanding contributions, and thank you to everyone who made the symposium a success!
