On 12 October, NUS Dentistry proudly hosted the Advanced Biomaterials & Innovation Symposium 2026, bringing together leading oral health academics for a day of scientific exchange and interdisciplinary innovation 🔬.

Organised with the International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research Dental Materials Group, the fully booked symposium explored four key areas:

🔹 Research Relevance and Scientific Impact: Editors' Perspective — Emeritus Professor Jack Ferracane (Oregon Health & Science University) and Professor Nikolaos Silikas (The University of Manchester) shared editorial perspectives on impactful research.

🔹 AI in Prosthodontics and Digital Dentistry — Associate Professor James Tsoi (The University of Hong Kong) explored AI and digital workflows in restorative treatment planning.

🔹 Research and Failure Analysis in Ceramic Restorations — Professor Alvaro Della Bona (University of Passo Fundo) discussed crack propagation, fractography, and ceramic performance.

🔹 Bioactive Biomaterials via AI and Holograms — Associate Professor Vinicius Rosa, NUS Dentistry's Research Lead for Novel Diagnostics and Therapeutics and symposium chair, explored computational modelling, material informatics, and next-generation bioactive cements.

An interactive panel and roundtable brought speakers and participants together to exchange ideas and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration.

The symposium reaffirmed NUS Dentistry's commitment to advancing research and shaping the future of oral healthcare.

Congratulations to NUS Dentistry doctoral candidate Clarice Sabino, who clinched 1st Prize in the Senior category at the 2026 IADR-SEA Hatton Divisional Competition! 🎉

A dental material can perform well in one biological test and poorly in another. So how do we describe its overall interaction with living cells?

Clarice's award-winning project, “Digital BioScore: Integrating Materials and Cells for AI-driven Biomaterials Design”, introduces a clever approach to tackling this question.

By combining multiple biological responses — including cell proliferation, migration, and mineralisation — into a single digital ‘hologram’, Digital BioScore creates a multidimensional biological fingerprint that could support more informed, AI-assisted biomaterials design.

The project was conducted under the supervision of Associate Professor Vinicius Rosa, NUS Dentistry’s Research Lead for Novel Diagnostics and Therapeutics.

🦷 KNOT your average workshop! 🪡

On 26 September, NUS Dentistry’s Centre for Advanced Dental Education (CADE) welcomed general dental practitioners for a hands-on workshop on flap design and suturing.

Led by Assoc Prof Alvin Yeo and supported by Dr Jacob Chew, participants explored key surgical techniques including incision, flap design, flap closure and suturing through a combination of practical and hands-on sessions.

From suture pads and typodonts to realistic tissue-based practice, the workshop provided participants with opportunities to strengthen their skills and confidence in essential surgical techniques.

Congratulations to Dr Jacob Chew, Assistant Professor at NUS Dentistry, whose insightful article was published in Shin Min Daily News! 👏

His article highlights the important two-way relationship between diabetes and gum disease and the role that good oral health can play in supporting overall health and diabetes management.

Dr Chew’s contribution brings an important message to the public: caring for our gums is not simply about maintaining a healthy smile. Regular brushing, interdental cleaning, and dental check-ups can help detect and manage gum disease early while supporting better awareness of the connection between oral and systemic health.

It was all smiles, laughter, and friendly competition as teams from NUS Dentistry and National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore (NUCOHS) came together for a fantastic team bonding event on 23 September 2026 at SuperBowl Mount Faber @ SAFRA! 🥳

Our teams hit the lanes, cheered each other on, and enjoyed a well-deserved break from daily office routines. From impressive strikes to delightfully unpredictable rolls, the evening was all about having fun, building connections, and strengthening our team spirit.

Of course, no bowling session would be complete without victory poses from our strikers! 🏆🎳

What does it take to avoid surgical defeat?

On 19 September, the Centre for Advanced Dental Education (CADE), NUS Dentistry held “The Art of Implant War – Know Thy Anatomy,” a programme that brought clinicians together to explore CBCT interpretation, anatomical landmarks and practical approaches to implant treatment planning, led by Assoc Prof Alvin Yeo and Dr Lim Li Zhen.

💬 One participant commented that “The lecturers, Dr Lim Li Zhen and Prof Alvin Yeo, were detailed and engaging. I truly learnt a lot from this course regarding CBCT usage in relation to implant planning. Thank you!”

Through case discussions and CBCT analysis, participants gained practical insights to support safer and more informed implant treatment planning.
