First established in 1958, Singapore Aviation Authority (SAA) is the training arm of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, a statutory board of the Singapore government. SAA offers a comprehensive range of internationally recognised training programmes in core functions such as aviation management, aviation safety and security, air traffic services, and airport firefighting. Adopting a practice-oriented approach, SAA delivers training programmes for aviation professionals at junior, middle management, and C-suite levels to cater to the diverse training and professional needs of individuals at different stages of their aviation careers. A leader in civil aviation training and a convenor of global experience and expertise, SAA is an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) TRAINAIR PLUS Platinum Training Centre of Excellence and a member of the ICAO TRAINAIR PLUS Steering Committee, a recognition of its commitment to provide quality training for aviation professionals internationally. Through the 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀: 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 course, participants will develop competencies required to plan, prepare, conduct and report on ICAO Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme Continuous Monitoring Approach (CMA) activities. What happens when 19 aviation professionals from 19 countries come together in Singapore for 3 weeks? ✈️

New perspectives are shared. Friendships are formed. Ideas take flight.

The Singapore Aviation Academy recently welcomed scholars for its second Singapore-ICAO Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) Scholarship Programme in Singapore.

The journey began with the NGAP Aviation Foundation Programme, where scholars explored how different parts of the global aviation system work together. Through sessions led by experts from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Changi Airport Group and Nanyang Technological University, they explored the opportunities, challenges and innovations shaping the sector. Learning extended beyond the classroom through experiencing air traffic management development in action and a learning journey to the AIR Lab @ Suntec. Mentorship sessions with SAA Senior Fellows deepened their professional learning. Some fun thrown in with a Chinatown heritage tour and river cruise to experience Singapore.

Over the second and third week, scholars deepened their understanding of Singapore’s aviation ecosystem through attachments to aviation organisations and operational facilities, gaining first-hand exposure to the operations here.

Just as importantly, the scholars also brought valuable insights from their own aviation systems and professional backgrounds. As conversations unfolded, their exchanges sparked new ideas, discovered common challenges and shared aspirations, connecting them as one global aviation community.

With fresh perspectives, lasting friendships and a taste of Singapore, these scholars leave ready to shape the future of aviation. Stay tuned for more highlights from their NGAP journey.

The future of aviation will be shaped not only by technology and innovation, but by the people who lead, adapt and make decisions in an increasingly complex world.

Recently appointed SAA Senior Fellow Ms Poppy Khoza, Director of Civil Aviation at the South African Civil Aviation Authority, shared these insights and more, as she engaged aviation professionals and the wider aviation community through two fireside chats in Singapore.

At a fireside chat organised by the Ministry of Transport, Singapore's National Transport Academy in partnership with the Singapore Aviation Academy, Ms Khoza discussed the evolving global aviation landscape. She explored the challenges of sustaining air connectivity and growth amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, as well as the opportunities and risks that advanced technology and AI present for civil aviation. She emphasised the need for regulation and cybersecurity to evolve alongside innovation, while keeping human responsibility, sound judgement and safety at the centre. Ms Khoza also emphasised the need for good leadership in the aviation sector and further support for more opportunities for women and youth in the aviation profession.

In a separate session with the second cohort of the Singapore-ICAO Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) scholars, Ms Khoza reflected on her own aviation journey, the experiences that shaped her approach to leadership and how she navigated career-defining change in an industry that never stands still. She shared candid reflections on staying curious, embracing challenges, drawing on the support of others and being intentional in one’s journey. Reflecting on the journeys that shape us and the responsibility to create pathways for those who follow, Ms Khoza shared a message that resonated deeply with many in the room: “Remember where you came from, and remember to keep the doors open behind you.”

The Singapore Aviation Academy (SAA) is honoured to welcome Ms Poppy Khoza to the SAA family as an SAA Senior Fellow.

Ms Khoza is Director of Civil Aviation at the South African Civil Aviation Authority - SACAA and its longest-serving Director of Civil Aviation, currently serving her third term. She played a pivotal role in strengthening South Africa’s safety oversight system, which is ranked among the top 7 globally. A respected leader in the global aviation community, she also made history as the first woman to preside over the 41st ICAO Assembly.

Ms Khoza joins a distinguished group of SAA Senior Fellows, alongside five other respected senior aviation leaders. Together, they bring a wealth of experience and expertise to SAA where they join us in investing in the next generation of aviation leaders and in enhancing the competencies of aviation professionals.

Shaping aviation standards requires more than technical expertise. It calls for collaboration and a deep understanding of operational realities.

Meet Mohamed Fadzil Mohamed Jakaria from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, who was appointed Chair of the international Task Force established by ICAO to carry out the Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS) review.

For over a decade, Fadzil worked alongside aviation experts from around the world to develop a robust and durable set of revised international requirements and refined them in close coordination with various international organisations. The outcome helped pave the way for more tailored approaches that better address the evolving needs of airports.

Today, Fadzil brings these insights and experiences into SAA's 𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗢 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲: 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 course, sharing not just the technical requirements, but also the rationale, practical considerations and real-world applications behind them.
