Many of our students know Prof Anthony Tung as a database researcher. Some also know him as a singer.

In a new interview with ACM SIGMOD Record, Prof Tung shares that he can spend three or four hours singing when he has the time, and that he sometimes sings with his students. He says music helps him think about pace and timing in his work, and that research ideas often come when his mind is relaxed.

The interview also covers DiversiNews, a system his team is developing to show readers different viewpoints on the same story.

Duan Jiafei used to perform a magic trick with billiard balls that depends on precise finger movements. Now he wants robots to manage the same.

At NUS Computing's MAGIC Lab, named after his love of magic, Asst Prof Duan works on robot learning. He previously led MolmoAct2, a fully open robot foundation model, and is now building a Singapore dataset and benchmark for embodied AI with a multimillion-dollar national grant.

Congratulations to Asst Prof Umang Mathur! 🎉 His co-authored paper on detecting data races has been selected for ACM SIGPLAN Research Highlights and featured in CACM Research Highlights.

Data races are software bugs that occur when tasks running at the same time access shared memory without coordinating. The research shows they can be detected by checking only a small sample of a program’s ex*****on, with guarantees that every race reported is real.

When you reach for the milk with the later expiry date, what happens to the carton you left behind?

NUS Computing's Assistant Professor Varun Karamshetty and his co-authors set out to measure how much expiration waste comes from this habit.

Working with a large European grocery retailer, they analysed about 15.3 million sales transactions across 125 stores. For most of the products studied, the effect accounted for roughly one third of expiration waste on average. The method uses data retailers already collect, so it can be applied across a store network without new technology.
