National University of Singapore, Faculty of Science To be among the world's best in science education and research

From modest beginnings in 1929 as a single department in Raffles College, with just ten students and three staff, the Faculty of Science has evolved into one of the largest Faculties in the National University of Singapore. There are now more than 4,500 undergraduate and 1,300 graduate students, 500 academic faculty, and 300 administrative, technical and support staff.

Every day, Statistics alumna Chimene Lim helps people see the world more clearly - but her work goes far beyond prescribing spectacles.

As CEO of First Eyewear Centre, she has transformed a traditional family optical business into a modern optometry practice focused on preventive care, advanced diagnostics and long-term vision management.

From interpreting diagnostic data objectively to making informed decisions on patient-centred eye care, her educational training continues to shape how she practices optometry.

“When vision is protected, so too is a person's independence, confidence and quality of life,” she says.

Science, art and business do not have to live in separate worlds.

For Syakirah Binti Jamaludin, they come together naturally through curiosity, creativity and a drive to create something meaningful.

As a Life Sciences student with a minor in Entrepreneurship (NUS Business School, National University of Singapore), she is building a path that blends scientific thinking with artistic craft, from the laboratory to her own creative business.

Through every side quest, every handmade piece and every new challenge, Syakirah is showing that it is possible to stay true to all the different parts of yourself.

Undergraduate research continues to thrive as students tackle complex, real-world questions through programmes like the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP).

The next generation of scientists is already questioning what is known and what remains to be discovered - showing that undergraduate research can create real, meaningful impact beyond classrooms and laboratories.

At the REx Conference 2026, NUS Science student Daniel Chong, one of the top winners in the Ignite Presentation category, presented his research on physical activity and screen use among children and adolescents in Singapore. His work highlights a pressing public health concern and offers evidence-based recommendations to support healthier, more active lifestyles.

“Chemistry was my worst subject.”

It’s a response Dr Bernard Ng often hears when he tells people he teaches chemistry. And it’s why he chooses to teach it differently.

As an educator and a digital content creator, he is on a mission to make chemistry accessible, engaging and even enjoyable. Beyond the classroom, he creates videos and online resources that simplify difficult concepts and help students appreciate “the beauty of chemistry.”

As a Chemistry alumnus, he credits his university experience for shaping not only his subject mastery but also his approach to teaching - from critical thinking and scientific communication to research and mentorship.

Interestingly, some of the skills that support his work as a content creator today - video production, coding and vector drawing - were hobbies he explored during university vacations.

Today, his greatest reward is hearing students say: “I finally understand this topic.”
