🆕 Being part of the pioneering Department of Statistics and Data Science, NUS (DSA) cohort back in 2016, the road ahead was filled with unknowns for National University of Singapore, Faculty of Science alumna Karen Tee.

“It was a leap of faith,” she says. “The curriculum aligned perfectly with my interests. Looking back, I’m incredibly glad I took that chance.”

🔢 Karen initially expected a conventional career path in accounting. But the DSA programme opened up a fresh vista of opportunities that brought the best out of her forte in numbers.

Now an analyst at YouTube, Google, she applies her problem-solving and analytical skills to devise campaign strategies across the marketing lifecycle by integrating first-party data with social conversation analytics 📊

“The hands-on experience of navigating the chaos of real data - from cleaning it to finding hidden patterns and translating it into actionable insights - mirrors exactly what I encounter at work,” she says 🧱.

🧬 Each person's DNA holds clues that shape our health in ways we are only beginning to understand. Why do some people develop diseases while others remain unaffected?

🔬 The answers are often hidden within billions of genetic signals encoded in our cells. The challenge lies not just in reading this vast data, but in making sense of it.

Working at the frontier of genomic medicine, Dr Liu Boxiang is doing exactly that.

By combining large-scale population studies with advanced data science, his research uncovers patterns in complex genetic data - helping scientists better understand why some individuals are more vulnerable to complex diseases.

What sets his research apart is its scale and precision. 🔍Focusing on Asian populations, his team goes beyond identifying which genes people carry to studying how those genes behave in different cells and tissues across the body.

These deeper insights shed light on the biological mechanisms behind complex diseases, opening new possibilities for more precise treatments tailored to individuals.

🏆 Dr Liu is recognised internationally for his pioneering contributions which have earned him numerous prestigious honours, including the Presidential Young Professorship and a National Research Foundation Fellowship, among others.

🔍 Life Sciences’ Lee Tyen Cee’s love for animals took flight from an early age.

🐦‍⬛That love led her to an unexpected Final Year Project studying the critically endangered Blue-crowned Laughingthrush at Bird Paradise. By uncovering how stress and captive environments affect the birds’ breeding behaviour, her research could help improve breeding programmes and support the species’ recovery.

“The thought that they might one day disappear really stayed with me. I wanted to do something, however small, to help protect their future,” she says 📈
