As AI becomes increasingly part of how we learn and process information, an important question emerges: Are we gaining deeper understanding, or simply getting quicker answers?

Our very own 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒇 𝑨𝒏𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒆𝒍 𝑪𝒉𝒆𝒏, 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕'𝒔 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒊𝒓 𝒊𝒏 𝑷𝒔𝒚𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 at NTU School of Social Sciences, was recently featured in a Vietnamese news article exploring reading comprehension and AI's impact on learning.

Prof Chen highlights how AI-generated summaries, however convincing, can create an illusion of understanding when we accept information without questioning, examining or interpreting it ourselves.

Isn't this a timely reminder that while technology can make information more accessible, critical thinking remains essential to meaningful learning?

At SSS, learning goes beyond the classroom, and our students are making the most of it!

Through a School-facilitated collaboration with a Family Service Centre, our PPGA and Sociology students volunteered, driven by their interest in the social service sector.

From engaging with children to navigating real-world challenges, they gained fresh perspectives, built meaningful connections and discovered how their social sciences knowledge can make a difference.

We love seeing our students seize opportunities, explore their passions and grow through experiences that could shape their future paths.

That's what learning beyond the classroom is all about!

Another year, another win!
And TWO consecutive years of Tenacity!

Congratulations to our NTU SSS Club 9th Management Committee on receiving the 𝑻𝒆𝒏𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅 at last night’s NTU Student Leaders Night 2026 —> marking our Club’s second consecutive win in this category and continuing its annual streak of award recognitions!

Faced with unexpected setbacks, the team adapted, reimagined and rebuilt their community engagement initiative, giving rise to 𝗦𝗦𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿𝘀.

SSS welcomed a delegation of 62 students, accompanied by faculty and staff from the Faculty of Business and Economics, Universiti Malaya, for an academic visit to NTU. The programme introduced our visitors to the NTU undergraduate experience, summer school opportunities and postgraduate pathways, followed by masterclasses in Corporate Finance and AI & Big Data in Finance. Over lunch, students and faculty from both universities connected, exchanged perspectives, and learned more about one another's academic experiences before wrapping up the day with a photo session and campus tour. SSS Forum 2026 on 16 September brought together Guest-of-Honour Assoc Prof Teo You Yenn, acclaimed author of This Is What Inequality Looks Like* and States of Unease, and Assoc Prof Walid Jumblatt Bin Abdullah, author of several books including the recent Why Palestine?.

Together, they kicked off “Beyond Meritocracy — Mobility, Inequality, and the Singapore Dream” with a thought-provoking conversation on inequality, mobility, meritocracy and what the Singapore Dream means today — followed by a lively floor Q&A that certainly got everyone talking!
