From campus couple to life partners — and now, co-owners of a boxing gym. 💙🥊

For National University of Singapore alumni Yumi Nguyen (Science ’09, MBA ’15) and Johan Vu (Engineering ’10, MComp ’15), NUS was where their love story began.

From late nights at Central Library and long walks back to Prince George’s Park to navigating career changes, building a home in Singapore and raising a family, their journey has been shaped by the friendships, resilience and experiences they found at NUS.

Today, alongside their careers in tech, they run a boxing gym in Katong, creating a space for people to build confidence, stay active and connect beyond the digital world.

Their story is also a reminder of the importance of staying connected and paying it forward. As Yumi shares, alumni can make a difference by sharing experiences, opening doors and supporting the next generation of NUS graduates.

What if you could amplify the impact of science by helping others make discoveries? 🔬💙

For NUS alumna Koh Mingshi (Science MSc ’04), the answer lies beyond the lab. As Executive Director of TRUST, Singapore’s national platform for health data research and innovation, she helps researchers securely access and connect health data held across different institutions — enabling them to focus on discoveries that could improve lives.

Her journey from laboratory experiments to strategy, policy and systems building reflects a powerful idea: sometimes, the greatest impact comes not from solving one problem yourself, but from enabling others to solve many. For Mingshi, leadership also means bringing others along, creating opportunities for the next generation and building a system people can trust.

What if centuries of botanical knowledge could be accessed with just a click? 🌿💻

For NUS alumnus Mr Ethan Eng (Science ’19), that’s exactly what he’s helping make possible.

As project manager of the Singapore Herbarium’s digitisation initiative, Ethan is helping transform nearly 800,000 preserved plant and fungi specimens into a searchable digital collection — making valuable botanical knowledge more accessible to researchers around the world.

From co-founding a kombucha brewery to developing digital tools and designing public exhibitions, his journey is a reminder that curiosity and skills from different disciplines can lead to unexpected opportunities.

And the impact goes beyond making old specimens easier to find. This work could support research into biodiversity, medicinal discoveries, climate-resilient crops and more.

💙 A lovely evening with our 2026 Class Ambassadors at their Welcome Party, enjoying good conversations, getting to know one another and exploring ideas for bringing fellow alumni together!

Our Chief Alumni Officer, Ms Ovidia Lim-Rajaram (Arts & Social Sciences ’89), opened the evening with a warm welcome and reflections on building meaningful alumni connections. Mr Bryan Tan (Design and Engineering ’24) shared his experience as a Class Ambassador, while Assoc Prof Arthur Tay (Engineering ’95, PhD ’98), Vice Dean of Alumni Relations at the NUS College of Design and Engineering, offered insights into staying connected with the wider NUS community.

Some reunions are planned. Others happen when you least expect them. 💙

We had a lovely surprise last night when Mr Eric Pondski (MSc TDSI‑MDTS ’08) and his family stumbled upon our 2026 Class Ambassadors Welcome Party. An unexpected NUS reunion, even away from campus!

Visiting from the United States with his wife and two daughters, Eric was back in Singapore for the first time since graduating from NUS nearly 20 years ago. A visit to campus to show his family where he had studied was already on their itinerary.

The chance encounter gave him an opportunity to reconnect with our Chief Alumni Officer, Ms Ovidia Lim‑Rajaram (Arts & Social Sciences ’89), and Assoc Prof Arthur Tay (Engineering ’95, PhD ’98), Vice Dean of Alumni Relations at the NUS College of Design and Engineering.

A heartwarming reminder that the bonds formed at NUS endure across time and distance. 💙

From old friends and familiar faces to new connections across borders — the NUS alumni community has been keeping busy! 💙

Over the past few months, alumni came together for reunions, milestone celebrations and meaningful gatherings across different schools and communities.

From Eusoff Hall (NUS)’s Class of 2025 R(EH)UNION and SPM’s (National University of Singapore, Faculty of Science) 20th anniversary homecoming to Duke-NUS’ reunion dinner, NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH) AlumNite and a public health reception in Manila, each gathering was a reminder that while our journeys may take us in different directions, the connections we make at NUS continue long after graduation.
