A pedestrian steps onto the road, hidden in the driver's blind spot. But what if our roads could detect danger and warn drivers before they even see it?

That’s the idea behind the Real-time Risk Assessment Cooperative Mode (ReRAC) system, developed by SIT’s Associate Professor Dan Chia. Using roadside cameras and AI, ReRAC assesses collision risks in real time and delivers instant warnings to connected vehicles and drivers, helping them anticipate hazards before they come into view.

Trialled at Ngee Ann Polytechnic between 2021 to 2025 under realistic traffic conditions, the system saw 57% to 60% of drivers slow down after receiving an alert.

ReRAC was developed in collaboration with MooVita Pte Ltd, STRIDES Frontiers and the University of Glasgow, with support from the National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF) and the Land Transport Authority – We Keep Your World Moving (LTA) under the Urban Mobility Grand Challenge Programme.

By shifting road safety from reacting to hazards to anticipating them, A/Prof Dan Chia’s research demonstrates how predictive AI and intelligent infrastructure can make roads safer for both human drivers and autonomous vehicles.

What kind of learning takes place when an aerospace engineering student spends a year working at an energy company in Sweden?

For SIT Aerospace Engineering student Nikhel Khanna, his Overseas Integrated Work Study Programme (OIWSP) wasn't just about gaining international work experience at Siemens Energy. It was about discovering how engineering principles can solve challenges beyond the aviation industry, experiencing different work cultures, and growing as an engineer and an individual.

From contributing to engineering projects to navigating life overseas, Nikhel returned with a broader perspective of what it means to be an engineer in today's global world.

Before an autonomous vehicle hits the road or emergency responders rely on a communications network, engineers need to know: will it work when it matters most?

That is the challenge behind a new Research Collaboration Agreement between SIT's Future Communications Translation Lab (FCTLab) and Keysight Technologies. Together, they are developing a platform that enables advanced 5G-enabled systems to be tested under realistic network conditions before deployment.

Whether supporting autonomous vehicle operations, remote ship pilotage or public safety communications, reliable performance is essential. By recreating real-world conditions in a controlled environment, researchers can better understand how these systems perform and identify potential issues before deployment.

Beyond advancing research, the collaboration will create learning opportunities for SIT students. Insights and methodologies derived from the project will be incorporated into the Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering programme, helping students gain exposure to emerging communications technologies and industry practices. Student involvement through capstone and integrative projects is also being explored.

Working alongside industry to solve real-world challenges is what we do as Singapore's University for Industry. Collaborations like these translate research into practical solutions that can benefit industries and communities.

Competing against leading universities from Australia, Canada, India, Poland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, Team MAKO proudly represented SIT, Singapore, and Southeast Asia at the European Int'l Sub Races (eISR) 2026.

Their efforts earned them 🥉Best Run, 🥉Best Speed, and 🥉Best Time – the result of months of designing, building, testing, and refining their human-powered submarine through applied learning.

AI can detect wildfires from space.
It can also increase carbon emissions.

Technology may be one of our greatest tools in the fight for sustainability. So how can we harness its potential without being part of the problem?

That was the question at the heart of SIT’s 4th Chief Sustainability Officer Community of Practice (CSO CoP).

Featuring leaders from Google, JTC Corporation, and the National University Health System, the discussion explored questions every organisation will soon have to answer: How do we decarbonise data centres? What talent will power a sustainable digital future? And how can AI make organisations more resource-efficient?

By bringing leaders together to exchange insights and best practices, the CSO CoP translates individual experience into collective progress.

As Singapore’s University for Industry, SIT plays that convening role by bringing academia and industry together to tackle real-world challenges. Beyond dialogue, these ideas are put into practice through industry partnerships, talent development, and real-world testbeds at our Punggol Campus. Systems like the multi-energy microgrid with SP Group and district cooling with ENGIE demonstrate what sustainable innovation looks like at scale.

What does a campus designed for the future look like? At SIT Punggol Campus, the answer isn't just something you see – it's something our students experience every day.

Smart sensor networks. Integrated building management systems. A solar photovoltaic system and multi-energy microgrid – not as a showcase, but as a working part of how the campus operates.

That's what brought a delegation from Argentina to our doors: Mr Guillermo Constancio Acosta, Minister of Economy and Public Management of the Province of Córdoba, and H.E. Mauricio Nine, Ambassador of the Argentine Republic to Singapore.

Being embedded in the Punggol Digital District means our students don't just learn about industry, they train and work alongside real companies through attachments and joint projects. The delegation was particularly interested to see this model, raising the possibility of student exchanges and overseas work attachments that could open doors for our students to gain experience across industries and cities.

We're grateful for the exchange with our friends from Argentina, and we look forward to seeing where this conversation leads. 🤝

The next chapter of Singapore's maritime story is is already taking shape.

This June, SIT brought applied learning to the public through interactive showcases at the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore - MPA's Voyage Beyond: Reimagining Maritime Singapore exhibition, inviting visitors to discover how innovation is shaping the future of the maritime sector.

A key highlight was Team MAKO, SIT's Human-powered Submarine team. More than a display of engineering excellence, it demonstrated how our students apply classroom knowledge to solve real-world challenges through hands-on learning and research.

As Singapore's maritime sector continues to evolve, SIT remains committed to developing industry-ready graduates equipped with the skills, curiosity and confidence to help shape its future.

Every challenge is an opportunity to learn, improve, and come back stronger. 💙⚓

Our Team MAKO has completed its first week at the European International Submarine Races (eISR) 2026 in the United Kingdom!

The team successfully cleared several key qualification stages, showcasing months of hard work and preparation. While they encountered a setback during one of the final checks, it also gave them the chance to identify an issue, make improvements, and return even stronger for their next attempt.

That's what applied learning is all about: embracing challenges, solving real-world problems, and never giving up.

The best way to spark curiosity is to let young minds and little hands build, experiment and discover. 🚁

That’s exactly what 40 upper-primary school students experienced at the Young Explorers: Drone and Technology Discovery, held at SIT Punggol Campus.

From building and flying their own drones to discovering the semiconductor chips that power them, participants experienced STEM beyond the classroom through two days of hands-on learning, teamwork and problem-solving.

A big thank you to Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong for gracing the event, our community partner, the Youth Network of Punggol North CO, industry partner STMicroelectronics, SIT faculty, student coaches and SITizen Ambassadors for making this experience possible.

“How do you turn an idea into a real-world solution?”

That was one of the main topics of discussion when we hosted professors, researchers, and industry leaders from Portugal at SIT, as part of the 2nd Singapore-Portugal Research and Innovation Week.

Our guests experienced how SIT brings applied learning to life – from industry-connected learning spaces and research facilities to collaborations that create impact beyond the classroom. Here’s what they got to see: 👇

🎓 Student Opportunities: The delegation was excited about the possibility of summer school programmes between Portugal and Singapore, which could open up new overseas learning experiences for SIT students in the future.

🔬 Real-World Learning in Action: They visited our NAMIC Hub@SIT and Power & Energy Lab, where SIT students don't just learn from textbooks, they work on real industry problems. In the Power & Energy Lab, for example, students use live data from an actual power grid as part of their studies.

💡 Helping Companies Innovate: They also learnt how SIT works hand in hand with companies to help turn ideas into solutions through our Innovation-as-a-Service model.

It's visits like these that spark new partnerships and ideas, and create opportunities for students, researchers, and industry to work more closely together in education and innovation.
