The science of what fish eat matters more than most people realise 🌊🐟

At World Aquaculture Singapore 2026 today, SIT and Singapore Food Agency (SFA) announced the establishment of the Feed and Feed Ingredient Technology Centre (F2TC) at SIT – a new research centre dedicated to improving what Singapore's fish farms feed their fish.

Why does that matter? Feed is one of the most significant input costs in aquaculture, and getting the nutrition right for tropical marine species is critical to the productivity of local farms.

F2TC brings together SIT's expertise in extrusion engineering, AI-driven modelling and applied research with SFA's industry networks and technical know-how. Global partners Clextral and INVE Aquaculture are on board to help scale discoveries from lab to farm.

The centre is part of Singapore Food Story 2, our national plan to build a stronger, more resilient food system – and reflects Singapore's commitment to climate-resilient food production in this Year of Climate Adaptation.

A new chapter begins for SIT.

We are honoured to welcome Mr Heng Swee Keat as the Singapore Institute of Technology’s inaugural Chancellor, with effect from 1 June 2026.

A respected statesman and former Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Heng has dedicated decades of service to Singapore across education, economic development and public leadership. His longstanding advocacy for applied learning and industry-relevant education has also closely resonated with SIT’s mission and growth journey as Singapore’s University for Industry.

As SIT’s first Chancellor, Mr Heng will serve as the University’s highest-ranking ceremonial office-holder and ambassador, supporting SIT in strengthening industry partnerships, advancing innovation and deepening our impact across industry and society.

A proud moment for our Accountancy undergraduates!

The Inter-University Internal Audit Case Study Competition, organised by The Institute Of Internal Auditors Singapore, challenges students to tackle real-world audit scenarios – assessing risks, evaluating internal controls, and developing practical recommendations.

At this year’s competition, our Accountancy undergraduates delivered an outstanding showing against strong competition from NTU, SMU and SUSS.

🏆Team Blackred Inc. (Year 2 undergraduates) emerged as overall champions
🏅Team Ebiko (Year 1 undergraduates) received a Merit Award

Both teams impressed with their rigour, clarity of thought and professionalism, demonstrating the applied skills expected of future audit professionals.

Our Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP) doesn't just prepare students for industry. It places them inside it.

Eugene Lio’s IWSP with ST Logistics took him from identifying operational gaps to implementing digital solutions that support business needs.

It's a model that creates continuity, connecting classroom learning to real work, and real work to a career.

And that’s also Kalyani Alagappan’s story of progression. An SIT Systems Engineering alumna, she's now a Senior Innovation Specialist at ST Logistics – the same organisation where her IWSP began. Through IWSP, she built the confidence to experiment, the resourcefulness to navigate challenges, and the drive to keep growing.

We wrapped up the week with our first beach clean-up at Coney Island!

Starting from campus, participants set out on foot before rolling up their sleeves to help keep our coastal environment clean. This builds on our twice-yearly clean-up initiative, traditionally focused on campus perimeters. This year, we extended our efforts into the wider community.

At the Human Library Experience: Pharmaceutical Industry Edition at SIT, our alumni became “Human Books”, sharing their personal journeys through honest, small-group conversations with students.

Now working across leading global pharmaceutical and healthcare companies, they spoke candidly about career paths and workplace realities, including industry expectations and the skills that helped them thrive in this fast-evolving sector.

With four rounds of conversations and students rotating between tables, there was no shortage of questions, laughter, and eye-opening moments along the way.

We just launched our new Centre for Intelligent Robotics (CIR) at ATxSummit 2026 and what this means for students is pretty exciting!

Robots are already showing up in our neighbourhoods, but making them work safely in our environment is harder than it looks. We're tackling that challenge right here in Punggol Digital District.

Through CIR, we're working with Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore and JTC to test and trial robotics in a live urban environment, not just in a lab. We're also partnering with companies like Unitree, Slamtec and QuikBot to tackle real-world challenges, such as using humanoid robots for last-mile delivery.

Our students don't just learn about robotics in a classroom, they work together with industry players on problems with real robots. These are the kinds of hands-on experiences that prepare them for jobs that are being created right now.

We're also expanding our robotics and AI programmes across undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education pathways. And through a new partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, students get global exposure in one of the fastest-growing fields in tech.

The future of work is changing and we're making sure our graduates are ready for it!

What does it take to ensure technology advances sustainability, not outpace it?

At SIT’s 4th Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) Community of Practice, centred on Technology in Sustainability, leaders across sectors focused on advancing sustainability from ambition to action, examining how technology could be created or leveraged to deliver meaningful, scalable impact for the environment and society.

Opening the session, Mr Bill Chang, Chairman of SIT’s Board of Trustees, set the tone: growth and sustainability must move together, and the decisions we make now about technology will shape how well we deliver on both.

The discussion that followed reinforced a clear message – sustainability must be designed upstream and scaled with intent, instead of being an afterthought.

Mr Cheong Jiawen from JTC Corporation shared how embedding AI and sustainability across the industrial lifecycle, from design to implementation, drives stronger long-term impact and innovation in greener solutions.

At National University Health System, Mr Ng Kian Swan shared NUHS’s decarbonisation strategies, showing how data and smart systems can optimise operations within hospitals and reduce environmental impact.

Mr Spencer Low from Google APAC added to this, noting that as AI scales, organisations must deploy it responsibly, balancing efficiency gains with its environmental footprint to drive better outcomes for people and the planet.

Moderated by Ms Fang Eu-Lin from Singapore, the panel converged on a shared imperative: amid the rapid growth of AI, sustainability is not a competing priority – it must be scaled with intent and embedded into every layer of how we build and deploy technology.

As Singapore’s University for Industry, SIT brings together industry, academia and practitioners to exchange perspectives, shape solutions and drive real-world impact.

What started as a granddaughter’s desire to communicate with her grandfather became an award-winning innovation on the global stage.

Four students from SIT-Newcastle University’s Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Engineering programme developed TalkingTiles, an affordable communication and rehabilitation tool for people with aphasia, a language disorder that can affect speech after a stroke.

Inspired by teammate Nur Tahirah Afiqah’s grandfather, who suffered from aphasia, the students created a tactile, offline alternative to conventional tools. Instead of accepting the silence, they built TalkingTiles – a 3D-printed tool that helps users construct sentences, which it then translates into speech. TalkingTiles also supports speech rehabilitation.

The project brought together engineering, healthcare and user-centred design, challenging the students to acquire and apply skills beyond their domains. From learning soldering and 3D modelling to troubleshooting their prototype overseas, the team worked closely with mentors and faculty members across engineering and speech and language therapy to refine the prototype and optimise it for real-world application.

Their innovation earned them the Best All-Girls Team award at the 2025 AAKRUTI Innovation Competition in Houston, Texas🏆

What does a globally relevant education at SIT look like? Here’s a glimpse of what we’re building. 🌍

An SIT delegation led by President Prof Chua Kee Chaing, Deputy President (Academic) & Provost Prof Susanna Leong, and Deputy President (Industry and Community) Mr Bernard Nee, recently visited Rome, Tallinn and Copenhagen to deepen ties with universities, industry, and ecosystem partners.

Rome – At RINA’s Open Innovation Hub, the team built on the RINA-SIT MoU and discussed ways to grow the partnership, from applied research and student mobility to possible startup engagement through RINA’s Call 4 Startup initiative.

Tallinn – The delegation visited TalTech - Tallinna Tehnikaülikool, where SIT ICT students will undertake immersion programmes in Digital Innovation and Applied AI later this year. They also visited NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence to explore how SIT students and faculty could gain deeper exposure to cybersecurity.

Copenhagen – At Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen Lighthouse and the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the delegation exchanged ideas on entrepreneurship, sustainability and industry-academia collaboration, with a focus on how these conversations could translate into learning opportunities for SIT students.

At SIT, applied learning means creating real-world exposure before graduation. Through partnerships like these, our students and faculty gain opportunities to learn from industry, connect globally and bring those perspectives back to Singapore.

When Cheang Jian Ming graduated with his Chemical Engineering degree in 2013, clean energy was still far from the mainstream industry it is today.

He stepped into it anyway.

That decision eventually led him to a role in strategy and investments at Électricité de France (EDF), a global leader in low-carbon energy and power generation, where he drove expansion opportunities in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

What set him apart wasn’t just his technical abilities. It was his willingness to go all-in on unfamiliar territory and keep learning across cultures, markets and technologies.

Having benefited from mentorship throughout his own journey, Jian Ming is focused on paying it forward. Today, he gives back by mentoring fellow SITizens – because for Jian Ming, success isn’t just about how far you go, but how many you bring along with you.

What does it really mean to be industry-ready?

For Kwon Sang Hyeok, it meant graduating with more than just technical knowledge, but the ability to apply it confidently in high-stakes, real-world environments.

Through the SIT–Technical University of Munich Asia - TUM Asia Electronics and Data Engineering joint degree programme, he was exposed to hands-on projects, practical problem-solving, and industry-relevant training, readying him for the fast-paced semiconductor sector. As he prepares to graduate this year and transition into a full-time engineering role with AMD, he is translating what he learnt in the classroom into tangible outcomes on the job.

His journey reflects what applied learning at SIT is all about: bridging theory and practice to prepare students not just to enter the workforce, but to deliver from day one.

Thank you to our partners, industry professionals, and our students for making Singapore Maritime Week 2026 a milestone for applied learning and innovation in the maritime sector.

This year, we launched Singapore’s first Maritime Engineering Doctoral Training Centre (MEDTC) and introduced a new Master's Programme in Vessel Management, co-developed with DNV in partnership with the Maritime and Port Authority–Singapore Maritime Foundation (MPA-SMF) Joint Office for Talent and Skills. These initiatives reflect SIT’s ongoing commitment to equipping learners, from undergraduates to doctoral researchers, with industry-relevant skills and experience.

Throughout the week, we deepened our collaboration with key industry partners by signing new MOUs and agreements, paving the way for joint research, knowledge sharing, and practical solutions that will shape the future of the maritime sector.

We concluded SMW 2026 with an industry visit involving international delegates from MPA Academy's Maritime Transformation & Innovation Programme (MTIP). This visit provided a first-hand look at how ideas discussed during the week are being put into practice, demonstrating the tangible impact of our partnerships.

Dr Tim Xu is an Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), specialising in community rehabilitation for older adults and stroke survivors. He leads the 12-week “Say No To Frailty” programme, which has benefited over 300 seniors, improving mobility and confidence while reducing fall risk by 50%. Recognised in Singapore’s Ministry of Health National Frailty Strategy (2023), the programme has been implemented across 16 Active Ageing Centres. His work focuses on translating evidence-based research into scalable, community-driven solutions that empower seniors to stay active, independent, and connected.

Engineers Can Help to Repair the Planet

When Cyclone Ditwah hit mid-holiday, Ramesh Subramaniam found himself pushing a stranded van through floodwaters. That moment stayed with him.

Now, as a learner in SIT’s Graduate Certificate in Sustainability Principles and Practices, Ramesh is channelling that instinct into his daily work – reducing carbon emissions in construction, rethinking how everyday products can be designed to last longer, and shaping sustainability decisions in large-scale projects.

In his own way, Ramesh is not just building infrastructure. He’s helping to repair the planet. And he’s not alone.

What does better mental health sound like?

At the Ideas Festival on 18 March, Associate Professor Peter Tay took the stage for "Resonance and Resilience: Exploring the Nexus of Music and Mental Health" – sharing findings from a collaborative study with The TENG Company on how sound and rhythm shape our well-being. The session also involved a live demonstration that gave the audience a front-row seat to the science in action.

No more monkey business – literally 🐒

You might have seen these long-tailed macaques getting (a little too) comfortable in our neighbourhoods.

So, students from the Systems Engineering (ElectroMechanical Systems) degree programme engineered an AI- and solar-powered system that detects and deters monkeys 24/7... keeping your bananas safe and corridors peaceful.

The team recently shared their progress with their capstone problem statement sponsor Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong, who is also Grassroots Adviser to Punggol GRC Grassroots Organisations, alongside mentors Dr Tang Liang and Dr Khoo Teck Ping.
