NTU maintains its position among the world’s top 3 in Materials Science in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, underpinned by strong research output.

NTU MSE has consistently maintained its position among the world’s top materials science programmes, demonstrating strong performance in research impact and global influence. Our work continues to be among the most highly cited worldwide, reflecting both its quality and real-world relevance.

As we mark 35 years at the School of Materials Science & Engineering, our focus remains clear:
• Bridging research with industry application
• Advancing work in semiconductors, sustainability, healthcare and AI
• Developing graduates who are ready for high-growth sectors

Our latest graduate outcomes reflect stronger performance locally in full-time employment within the discipline, with a higher proportion of students securing roles within six months of graduation. This reflects strong demand across sectors, including advanced materials & emerging technologies, innovation & manufacturing, and semiconductors.

We’ve also introduced new postgraduate pathways and programmes to meet evolving industry needs.

From idea → prototype → real-world testing

At the Ian Ferguson Innovation Challenge (IFIC), NTU MSE students turn materials science ideas into working solutions.

This year, 26 teams tackled challenges ranging from sustainable packaging to healthcare technologies and functional coatings.

The winning team developed a straw-less drink carton designed to reduce reliance on single-use plastic straws — showing how thoughtful design can make everyday products more sustainable.

Along the way, students worked with industry mentors Mr Lim Keng Guan and Ms Foo Su Yi Charlotte from Singapore Polytechnic’s Food Innovation & Resource Centre (FIRC) , gaining insights into food safety, packaging processes, and real-world product development.

👏 Congratulations to all teams who participated in this year’s challenge!

2026 marks a milestone year for NTU’s School of Materials Science & Engineering — our 35th anniversary.

Over the past three and a half decades, generations of students, alumni, faculty and industry partners have shaped the journey of MSE.

What began as a young programme has grown into one of the world’s leading materials science schools, driven by a community that continues to advance research, innovation and industry impact.

To commemorate this milestone, we will be hosting a series of student–alumni engagements throughout the year that bring different MSE generations together.

A highlight of the year will be the MSE 35th Anniversary Family Day on 25 July, Sat, where alumni from all cohorts can reconnect with classmates, meet fellow members of the community, and celebrate the School's shared journey.

More details will be announced progressively. We look forward to welcoming our alumni back during this special year!

Many of our alumni still recall their time in the labs, tutorials, IA and FYP. MSE alumni — feel free to share your graduation year or a favourite memory from your time at MSE!
