A career in academia is built through ideas, leadership and the people who share the journey.

As Professor Tim White retires from NTU on 1 August 2026, we celebrate his appointment as Emeritus Professor, recognising a distinguished career in research, education and service.

Students remember a professor who explained difficult ideas step by step, created thoughtful learning resources and responded with remarkable care and speed. Colleagues know him for the rigour, energy and perspective he brought to the School.

Success is not about making the perfect choice. It is about owning the decision — and finding the strength to keep going.

At Convocation 2026, guest speaker Dr Elva Xin Zou — an NTU Materials Engineering alumna whose career has spanned public service, technology and regional strategy — and MSE Class of 2026 valedictorian Liya Yeo reflected on what carries us through uncertainty.

The courage to begin again. The resilience to take life one step at a time. And the people who walk alongside us.

As MSE Chair Professor Ng Kee Woei reminded our graduates, social media may show the milestones, but rarely the struggles behind them.

So, Class of 2026:

35 years. More than 5,000 alumni. One MSE community.

Our MSE 35th Anniversary Family Day brought alumni, faculty, staff, students, families and friends together for an afternoon of reunions, performances, conversations and celebration.

We were honoured to welcome Mrs Ferguson as our Guest of Honour and grateful for her lasting support of student innovation and overseas research exposure.

We also celebrated our MSE Outstanding Alumni Award recipients:
• Dr Oh Joo Tien, for more than three decades of teaching, research and mentorship
• Mr Elvin Liang, for his leadership, alumni service and dedication to giving back

Four days. Five research areas. A new view of what materials science can be.

In July, two cohorts from Wuhan University of Technology joined NTU MSE for an immersion spanning advanced laboratories, research seminars and a hands-on Materials and AI workshop.

From fatigue-resistant elastomers and high-entropy alloys to foams, smart textiles and AI, the students experienced how materials research crosses disciplines — and how ideas move between classrooms, laboratories and real-world applications.

Their reflections highlighted what stayed with them most: the freedom to explore, rich academic resources, advanced research facilities and faculty who were generous in sharing their knowledge.

We hope the experience opened new possibilities for where materials science could take them next. And thank you to everyone across NTU MSE who helped bring the immersion to life!

NTU MSE turns 35 in 2026 — and we’re celebrating the journey that brought us here!

From our beginnings in 1991 as Singapore’s first materials engineering degree programme, NTU MSE has grown from a small inaugural cohort of 49 students into a School shaped by generations of alumni, faculty, staff and students.

As we mark this milestone, we look back on the people, places and moments that have defined MSE across three and a half decades — from early labs and lecture spaces, to our home at N4.1, to the research, teaching and community that continue to shape our future.

From student leadership to research in sustainable and functional materials, women at NTU MSE are shaping the future of engineering.

To mark International Women in Engineering Day on 23 June, we connected with Ms Maftuna Badalova, Year 4 undergraduate student and one of the youngest female scientific committee members of the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad; Dr Deng Jingyu (NTU MSE full-time research fellow and fresh graduated Ph.D); and Dr Wang Yamin (NTU MSE full-time research fellow and alumni), recipients of NTU’s Women in Engineering, Science, and Technology Development Grant.
