A New Milestone for Murdoch University Singapore!

We are delighted to announce the official launch of Murdoch University's Master of Decarbonisation, Energy and Sustainability Management (MDESM) in Singapore, a new postgraduate online programme equipping the next generation of leaders with the technical, policy and strategic capabilities needed to drive decarbonisation across industry, government and consultancy

The launch was held alongside our 10th Green Economy Research Seminar, themed “Beyond the Lab to the Boardroom: Driving the Net Zero Transition”, bringing together leading academics and industry experts to explore how sustainability ambitions can be translated into meaningful business action.

Panellists emphasised that the next five years will be critical in translating sustainability commitments into measurable outcomes. Success will depend on credible transition plans, greater investment in clean technologies, improved carbon literacy and a skilled workforce capable of driving organisational change.

The central message: Achieving net zero requires more than technological innovation. It calls for collaboration between universities, businesses, financial institutions and governments to turn sustainability ambitions into practical, commercially viable solutions.

The launch of Murdoch University's new Master's programme by Professor Peter Waring, Pro Vice Chancellor Transnational Education and Singapore Dean, reinforces the University's commitment to developing the expertise and leadership needed to support Singapore and the wider region's transition towards a sustainable future.

We encourage people to seek help. But are we preparing enough people to help?

As we continue to raise awareness about mental health this October, following World Mental Health Day on 10 October, we are reminded of the importance of breaking down stigma and encouraging those who are struggling to seek support.

But behind every call to "seek help" is someone who may have spent weeks, months or even years finding the courage to reach out.

And when they finally do, who is there to help?

A listening ear, a kind word or simply being present can mean a great deal. But there are times when even the best intentions are not enough.

Someone struggling with trauma, overwhelming distress or a mental health crisis may need more than reassurance. They need someone with the training, judgement and experience to recognise what is happening, respond appropriately and know when further support is needed.

Encouraging people to seek help matters. Helping them find the right support matters just as much.

As Dr Tarin Ong, Discipline Lead for Counselling at Murdoch University Singapore, reflects:

"Having worked in mental health and counselling for many years, I have come to appreciate just how much trust it takes for someone to share their struggles. Behind every person seeking help is a story, often one that has been difficult to tell. We owe it to them to ensure that those who offer professional support are not only compassionate, but also properly trained, ethically grounded and prepared for that responsibility."

Recognising the importance of preparing skilled and compassionate professionals, Murdoch University Singapore, together with the School of Allied Health at Murdoch University, will introduce three counselling programmes commencing in Semester 1, 2027:

Our students came together for an afternoon of fun, laughter, and networking at Mingle Mania!

From friendly matches of UNO and Jenga to singing along with the mic in hand, there was something for everyone.

Over snacks and conversations, students made new connections, shared experiences, and explored ideas for future student-led activities.

Have an idea for how AI could solve a real-world problem?

Join AI FOR IMPACT 2026, Kaplan Singapore’s interdisciplinary AI Solution Hackathon, and work with your teammates and lecturer to turn your idea into a working solution.

You can tackle challenges across Business, Communications, Media & Creative Content, Law, Health & Social Sciences, or IT & Computer Science. Your solution could be an AI-powered web application, automation, agent, image/video solution, creative media application or other multimodal AI innovation.

You don’t have to be an experienced coder. The hackathon is AI model and platform agnostic—you can build with the AI platforms and tools you are most comfortable with. Teams progressing through the competition will also have the opportunity to attend a Google Vibe Coding Workshop on 7 October.

Form a team of 3–5 students with a lecturer, identify a problem worth solving and submit your idea.

Registration has been extended to 5 October 2026, with proposal pitches accepted on a rolling basis ahead of the live hackathon on 2–3 November.

• 1 September –5 October 2026 – Registration and proposal submission
• 29 September onwards – Team proposal pitching (recorded presentation) and selection on a rolling basis
• 7 October 2pm – 4pm– AI coding workshop by Google

Eligibility
• Open to currently enrolled Murdoch Singapore students
• There is no limit to the number of submissions per participant. However, should a participant have multiple entries selected among the winners, they will only be counted and awarded as one (1) winner.
• Submissions may be made under an individual's name or a group name. Where a group submission wins, students within the group are responsible for dividing the voucher prize among themselves, at their own discretion.

Go watch The Violinist at Shaw and Golden Village theatres now!

The Violinist has made history as the first Singapore-produced animated feature to win the Cristal for a Feature Film at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival – often regarded as the "Cannes of animation".

The film also received the SACEM Award for Best Original Soundtrack, celebrating its outstanding musical score.

A wonderful milestone for Singapore’s animation and creative industries.

Set against the backdrop of colonial Singapore, the Japanese Occupation and the post-war years, The Violinist is a moving story of friendship, resilience and the enduring power of music.

Congratulations to directors Murdoch University Alumnus Ervin Han and Raul Garcia, the talented cast and crew, and everyone who helped bring this remarkable Singapore story to the world stage.
