🥉 From hangar-floor observations to an award-winning AI prototype.
 
During aircraft inspections, maintenance technicians often have to look away from the aircraft to log checklists on tablets. This routine task can introduce safety risks on the hangar floor.
 
That is where WingMan comes in. Developed by NTU students Raunak Saxena and Shivaranjini Chakrabarti, this voice-based AI assistant uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to help technicians record tasks, retrieve safety checklists and follow step-by-step instructions without taking their eyes off the aircraft.
 
Inspired by observations during an internship at SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC), their working prototype earned 3rd place at the Aviation Safety Competition (ASC) 2026, making them the finalists representing NTU. ✈️

An inspiring afternoon of open dialogue at the College of Engineering! 💬✨
 
With an amazing turnout, the Dialogue and Lunch Session with Associate Dean (Graduate), Prof Wang Qijie, brought together PhD students to reflect on their academic journeys, exchange perspectives, and discuss both opportunities and challenges within the postgraduate landscape.
 
Insights gathered from the discussion will help steer future initiatives aimed at cultivating an empowering and collaborative research ecosystem.

✈️ NTU Singapore is heading to Thailand!

Thinking about pursuing a PhD in science, technology, engineering or mathematics?

Faculty and representatives from Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) will be visiting four universities in Bangkok and the surrounding area this October to meet prospective PhD students.

What if a sensor platform could track railway safety, detect partial discharge in power grid, and check blood glucose levels? 🚆🩹

From power grid online monitoring to railway infrastructure safety, Professor Zheng Yuanjin has built an outstanding track record of translating advanced microchip and sensor research into practical, market-ready products. Yet, at the forefront of his recent work is an among world-first wearable sensor designed for the continuous, non-invasive monitoring of blood glucose levels.

Utilizing photoacoustic and metawave technologies, this wearable device eliminates the need for painful needle pricks, offering a painless screening tool for managing diabetes and cardiovascular health. The innovation is currently undergoing clinical trials at hospitals in Singapore and China, with commercial licensing targeted for late 2026.

Professor Zheng perfectly embodies the spirit of the 2026 College of Engineering Industrial Excellence Award. Congratulations on this well-deserved honour!

"What if a bridge could tell us exactly where it hurts?" 🩹

For Prof Kim Gun from School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, answering this simple question meant embarking on an extraordinary cross-disciplinary journey.

Inspired by how fireflies emit light to signal their location, he ventured outside his core discipline of civil engineering to master mechanochemistry, creating revolutionary colour-changing materials that visually "speak" when under stress. These smart materials require no batteries or wires, they simply change colour (from a safe purple to a critical red) to visually flag stress and damage the moment it occurs.

🚀 NTU Singapore’s 14th satellite, CRIMSON-1, is now in Low Earth Orbit after launching aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
 
The satellite is putting two emerging technologies to the test in the harsh conditions of space: lightweight, flexible perovskite solar cells and edge AI computing.
 
CRIMSON-1 will measure how well the solar cells withstand launch and perform in orbit, while its onboard AI will use edge computing to process images directly in space rather than sending all the raw data back to Earth.
 
The mission could help advance lighter solar power for future satellites and show how spacecraft can analyse data onboard, reducing the time and bandwidth needed to transmit information to Earth.

🧬🔬 Colorectal cancer cells often trick our immune system into standing down by sending a false signal. This allows the tumour to grow unchecked. While standard treatments can block this signal using laboratory-made proteins, these drugs are complex and expensive to produce.
 
A research team at NTU Singapore has developed a microscopic alternative. Led by Professor Ali Miserez, from NTU’s School of Materials Science and Engineering and School of Biological Sciences, and Assistant Professor Bertrand Czarny, from NTU’s School of Materials Science and Engineering and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, alongside PhD student Chen Zilin, the team engineered tiny, protein-like droplets that act as microscopic cargo packages.

These droplets carry gene-blocking molecules directly into both the cancer and immune cells, stopping the cells from producing this false signal in the first place.
 
 
In laboratory trials on mice, this dual-action delivery method reduced the growth of colorectal tumours by about 67 per cent. The results match the effectivity of current standard antibody treatments, but at a price the team estimates is five to ten times cheaper if successfully scaled up. 🧫

Can we manipulate quantum states to make green hydrogen more viable? ⚡

Professor Jason Xu Zhichuan, recipient of the 2026 College of Engineering Research Award, has pioneered the field of spin electrocatalysis, demonstrating that controlling electron spin can speed up chemical reactions.

By developing catalyst models that align electron spins, Professor Xu's group has successfully lowered the energy barriers for key reactions, including water electrolysis for green hydrogen production and ammonia oxidation for efficient hydrogen transport. His work provides vital design principles to improve the efficiency and durability of clean energy technologies central to global decarbonisation goals.

Congratulations to Professor Xu on this recognition of his trailblazing research in electrocatalysis.

Helping the next generation of students discover the possibilities of engineering. 🌱
 
From 22 to 26 September, Assistant Dean (Students) of NTU Engineering, Associate Professor Hou Han Wei, together with Alan Phua and Ong Hue Sien from NTU Admissions, met students across Yogyakarta and Central Java, Indonesia.
 
The NTU team visited SMAN 8 Yogyakarta, SMAN 1 Yogyakarta, SMA Kesatuan Bangsa, SMA Stella Duce 1, SMA Kolese De Britto, SMA Taruna Nusantara, SMA Pradita Dirgantara and Sekolah Nasional Karangturi.
 
Through the sharing sessions, students learnt more about NTU, our engineering programmes, student experience and the opportunities available to them. They were also introduced to seniors from their schools who are currently studying engineering at NTU, giving them a glimpse into the NTU student journey.    
 
Thank you to the schools, students and local officials for the warm welcome. We hope to see some familiar faces on the NTU campus in the years ahead. 🎒
