We are delighted to announce that Associate Professor Robin Loon (Department of English, Linguistics and Theatre Studies) has been appointed incoming Director (Teaching & Learning) at the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT), effective 1 July 2026!

A two-time recipient of the Annual Teaching Excellence Award Honour Roll, A/P Loon has contributed extensively to peer-mentoring through the Career Advancement for FASS Educators and the Science Educators' Network. He was also the first in FASS to be inducted into the honour roll for the FASS Inspiring Mentor Awards, and is widely recognised for his passion for community engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and faculty mentorship.

“One of the biggest takeaway I have from being an educator at FASS is the importance of community building." A/P Loon shares, "The many teaching and learning collaborations ... [have] given the space to realise the importance of engagement and deep listening. I hope to bring these values to my work as CTLT's Director of Teaching and Learning.”

We look forward to A/P Loon's leadership in shaping a vibrant, connected, and future-ready teaching culture across NUS! 🎉

26 students from NUS Geography and the NUS Environmental Studies (BES) Programme journeyed across Kenya’s Great Rift Valley for 11 days as part of NUS Geography’s “Field Investigation in Physical Geography” course. 🌍

As they explored issues of environmental change, biodiversity conservation, and human–wildlife interactions, and engaged with local communities, what began as a dream of “seeing Africa” became a journey of discovery, beyond the savannahs, mountains and wildlife seen only on screen – revealing how deeply people and the environment are connected, and how lessons from afar can reshape new ways of thinking back home. ✨ NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

For many, mental health chatbots have become a quiet first stop for stress, low mood or sleepless nights. But as their reach grows, so do questions about safety, limits and trust.

Dr Nur Hani Zainal, NUS Presidential Young Professorship Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychology, explains that Singapore needs clear standards to ensure the safe and effective use of chatbots, with a hybrid approach that includes humans who can step in when needed.

Any tool designed for mental health should state in plain terms what it does and what it does not do. A chatbot can teach micro skills, explain common problems in everyday language and encourage first steps. It should not be left to manage acute risk or decide whether someone has a disorder, she elaborates. NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

What does it mean to rediscover a legend — and yourself — through theatre? For NUS alumna Chermaine Kumar (Arts & Social Sciences ’16) and NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences student Titus Hutch Jr. Yim, the upcoming production 'Radin Mas, Who?' is more than a retelling of a folktale.

For Titus, writing this play is a chance to tell meaningful, unexpected stories. For Chermaine, who transitioned from social work to acting, it’s a return to what makes her feel most alive. Together, they explore themes of migration, resilience and belonging — connecting a historic tale to the communities of today. Learn more about their journey: https://nus.edu/48dHIof

AI can generate content at an unprecedented scale, but judgment, interpretation and the ability to recognise uncertainty remain distinctly human capabilities. That was the message from speakers across academia, the arts and philanthropy at the recent “Future Horizons: Envisioning the Humanities and Social Sciences” event organised as part of the 2026 Ideas Festival.

They argued that humanities and social sciences are not optional. Rather, they matter more than ever as they equip us with the critical skills to make sense of what we create, question bias and power, and navigate complexity in an AI-shaped world. NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

15% of Singaporeans aged 60 and above do not have children. Among women born in the early 1970s, it’s one in four. Yet end-of-life planning systems still assume family members will play a central role.

A nationwide study by NUS Associate Professor Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan and her team reveals that childless Singaporeans are often more proactive in Advance Care Planning (ACP) than those with children, but face significant barriers, such as difficulty identifying trusted proxy decision-makers and misconceptions about the ACP process.

She recommends to integrate end-of-life conversations into routine healthcare, clarify what ACP actually involves, and provide better support and protection for individuals who choose non-family decision-makers. NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Amid the ongoing global oil crisis, NUS economist Assoc Prof Alberto Salvo argues that Singapore can break its fossil fuel dependence by strengthening regional energy cooperation through the ASEAN Power Grid, trade agreements, and renewable energy investment. These are measures that will boost energy resilience, enhance competitiveness, and shield households from future price shocks. NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
