Architecture today goes beyond designing buildings. It is about reimagining how we live, work and connect through design, technology and innovation.

At Singapore ArchiFest 2026, SUTD showcased projects that explored the future of the built environment, while contributing to conversations on topics ranging from AI to interdisciplinary design. SUTD Deputy President Prof Tai Lee Siang participated in the Day 1 panel session, while Asst Prof Immanuel Koh shared insights during the Day 2 forum on the AI Hackathon.

Thank you to everyone who visited our exhibition, joined the discussions and connected with our faculty, students and alumni. Every conversation is an opportunity to rethink how we design a more sustainable and human-centred built environment.

Congratulations to Research Fellow Dr Cai Xinyu, Research Fellow Dr Shane Kyi Hla Win from Temasek Laboratories @ SUTD, and Associate Professor Foong Shaohui, Associate Head of the Engineering Product Development (EPD) pillar on receiving the 2026 IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics Best Paper Award.

Chosen from more than 700 papers published in 2025, their award-winning paper, "QuadRotary: Design and Control of In-Flight Transition Between Quadcopter and Rotary-Wing," was recognised for its innovative design of a reconfigurable aerial vehicle that switches seamlessly between quadcopter and rotary-wing flight, enabling agile cruising and energy-efficient hovering.

Jointly presented by the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES), IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) and the ASME Dynamic Systems and Control Division (DSCD), the award recognises the best refereed paper published annually in IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics.

Why do pedestrians in Phnom Penh rarely take the shortest route?

Research Assistant Professor Samuel Chng and his team from SUTD's Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities analysed more than 6,000 GPS-tracked walking trips to uncover how people really navigate the city and what it means for designing more walkable urban environments.

Cities across the Global South are urbanizing at pace, but their built environments for walking rarely resemble ideal, tidy, and well-regulated networks. Vehicles are parked on pedestrian sidewalks, and a seemingly direct route on a map may feel longer in practice. Moreover, many urban planning idea...

How can AI help preserve cultural heritage through play?

Created by SUTD student Abdallah Diaaeldin Hassan Ahmed and his team, Heritage Plate is a hybrid physical-digital arcade experience that brings Singapore's lesser-known food heritage to life through interactive gameplay.

The project combines AI-assisted development with design thinking to create a more engaging way for younger generations to explore, learn and connect with cultural heritage.

As Singapore expands autonomous vehicle trials, the conversation is shifting beyond what the technology can do to whether people are ready to embrace it.

In his latest commentary, Samuel Chng, Research Assistant Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities and Head of the Urban Psychology Lab, explores why building public trust is just as important as advancing the technology itself.

How do you teach a robot to catch itself when it falls?

Professor Mohan Rajesh Elara and his team at SUTD's Robotics and Automation Research (ROAR) Laboratory have developed an AI-powered fall mitigation system that helps stair-climbing robots recover mid-fall, bringing safer and more reliable autonomous robots one step closer to reality.

Navigating staircases poses one of the most formidable challenges for mobile robots. Unlike level ground, where balance and movement are relatively predictable, stairs introduce uneven terrain and

One month after signing our MOU with DEEP Robotics , a Hangzhou-based robotics company recognised for its advances in AI and robotics, SUTD welcomed the team to campus for our first working session, marking the next step in advancing the collaboration.

The discussions explored opportunities in embodied AI, autonomous navigation, sensor fusion and human-robot collaboration, alongside plans to localise robotics platforms for Singapore and the ASEAN region. The session also covered student internships, capstone projects and hands-on learning opportunities, strengthening industry exposure for the next generation of robotics talent.

The working session reflects our commitment to translating partnerships into meaningful collaboration from the outset. We look forward to developing robotics solutions for real-world applications while advancing robotics research, innovation and talent development.

How can cities support healthier lives, stronger communities, and more regenerative futures?

At the World Cities Summit 2026, researchers from the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKYCIC), SUTD's Architecture and Sustainable Design pillar, and the Net Zero Futures Lab explored this question through research on mobility, health, and regenerative urban development.

Across three sessions, they shared insights on how cities can move beyond efficiency and infrastructure to focus on peopleโ€™s everyday experiences, wellbeing, and social connections. From rethinking mobility as a contributor to urban wellbeing, to designing health-enabling neighbourhoods and developing frameworks for regenerative cities, the discussions highlighted the value of interdisciplinary research in shaping more liveable, resilient, and future-ready urban environments.

What if creating with a 3D printer was as simple as having a conversation?

At the SUTD Fab Lab, we are testing and implementing Talk2Print, a smart AI-powered 3D printing system developed by SUTD Senior Research Assistant Youssef Elkhouly, with guidance from Associate Professor Soh Gim Song. Using AI and voice-based interaction, it makes digital fabrication more intuitive, accessible and interactive.

One of its key features? The ability to monitor and self-correct prints in real time to reduce failed prints. A huge plus for students prototyping and experimenting at the Fab Lab.

No 3D printing experience? No problem. ๐Ÿ‘€
