What happens when AI meets Extended Reality (XR) in the design studio?

Developed at SUTD, AI PEER combines AI with interactive 3D environments to support design learning, site analysis, and prototyping.

The platform is currently used in SUTD’s Freshmore courses, Innovating with Design and AI (IDeA) 1 and 2, where students learn to apply AI tools critically throughout the design process.

🏆 From classroom learning to national recognition.

Congratulations to Team GEN-I from SUTD's Master of Science in Technology and Design (Data Science) programme for clinching 2nd place in the National AI Student Challenge (NAISC) 2026 – Singtel Track!

Competing against more than 70 teams nationwide, the team tackled a real-world machine learning challenge using Singtel churn data, developing an end-to-end pipeline to detect and mitigate data drift in production AI systems.

Their solution demonstrated how a targeted intervention could significantly improve model performance, with findings presented at the NAISC Grand Finals.

Congratulations to SUTD Assistant Professor Zhang Wenxuan from the Information Systems Technology and Design (ISTD) pillar on being featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia for his contributions to AI research! 🎉

His work focuses on making large language models more inclusive and reflective of Southeast Asian languages and cultures. He also contributed to the development of SeaLLMs, a series of AI models tailored for regional languages including Indonesian, Thai, and Vietnamese.

Last year, he was also named among Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists.

SUTD welcomed a delegation from Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) led by Dr Imagawa Takuo, Vice-Minister for International Affairs.

The visit was hosted by the Future Communications Research and Development Programme (FCP) and featured an introduction to the programme, a walkthrough and demonstrations at the Future Communications Connectivity Lab (FCCLab) showcasing how AI-RAN can power the next generation of Physical AI applications.

How heat-proof is your home? ☀️🏠

Research led by the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKYCIC) at SUTD found that nearly half of over 400 HDB flats studied were warmer than the outdoors, largely due to poor or impeded airflow.

The findings highlight how design, ventilation, and everyday living habits can shape indoor comfort in a warming climate.

What if saving electricity could be as simple as checking an app? ⚡📱

Developed by SUTD students, SaveHor! helps residents track electricity usage in real time, understand appliance-level consumption, and build smarter energy-saving habits for everyday living.

SaveHor! was one of the projects featured at the South West Community Inno Lab Symposium organised by the South West Community Development Council (CDC), where student-developed solutions were piloted in real community settings to tackle everyday challenges.

From energy conservation and waste management to accessibility and pest control, more than 100 students came together to co-create practical solutions for 10 community issues across the South West District.

Celebrating 10 years of the SUTD Master of Architecture programme! 🎉

The 2026 Public Review, held on 29 Apr, marked the 10th anniversary of the first graduating batch of the SUTD Master of Architecture programme. Alumni, industry partners, students, faculty, and invited guests came together to celebrate a decade of design innovation, research, and future-focused architectural education.

Visitors explored research-driven thesis projects spanning AI, sustainability, adaptive shorelines, net-zero futures, spatial policy, and more, reflecting the evolving role of architecture in shaping resilient and future-ready cities.

The event also welcomed practicing architects and industry professionals as jurors and reviewers, fostering meaningful dialogue between academia and practice while recognising outstanding student work and design excellence.

Here’s to the next decade of shaping architecture beyond buildings through technology, ecology, urban systems, and social impact.

From research lab to global expansion!

SUTD drone start-up Spinoff Robotics has been acquired by Nanoveu Limited, an A$65 million Australian-listed technology company specialising in advanced semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Founded in 2021 by SUTD Engineering Product Development Associate Professor Foong Shaohui and doctoral researchers Dr Tan Chee How, Dr Shawndy Michael Lee, Dr Emmanuel Tang and Dr Denzel Lee, the team has developed drone platforms designed for real-world inspection, maintenance and operational challenges.

Another global win for Neural Drive! 🚀

The student startup recently clinched 1st Place at LotusHacks, Vietnam’s largest AI competition co-organised by Harvard University and GenAI Fund — beating over 1,500 developers from 30+ countries and taking home a S$50,000 prize pool. The team also won the Best Use of Codex award.

At the competition, the team showcased FocusIQ, Neural Drive’s newest EdTech product built on the same AI and biosignal platform powering its healthcare innovations. Designed to analyse brainwaves in real time, FocusIQ adapts learning experiences based on focus and fatigue levels — marking Neural Drive’s expansion into new verticals such as the education industry.
