Clearly, while the rest of us are trying to hold down the fort, she is out there smashing through the fairways, bunkers and the competition.

All jokes aside, an amazing achievement and a proud moment for the NUS community. The tournament brought together more than 100 golfers from National University of Singapore and Universiti Malaya, continuing a longstanding tradition of friendship, sportsmanship and camaraderie between both universities.

Last Friday, we joined the wider 𝗡𝗨𝗦 community to celebrate the 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 at the 𝗡𝗨𝗦 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 🎓✨

It was a special evening catching up with our 𝗡𝗨𝗦-𝗜𝗦𝗦 alumni and celebrating how far they have come. We were glad to have 𝗠𝗿 𝗠𝘂𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗱 𝗬𝘂𝘀𝘂𝗳, Valedictorian and Master of Technology in Software Engineering (MTech SE) graduate, 𝗠𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗸 from the Master of Technology in Enterprise Business Analytics (MTech EBAC), 𝗠𝗿 𝗝𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗻𝗮𝗻 from the Master of Technology in Artificial Intelligence Systems (MTech AIS), and 𝗠𝗿 𝗪𝗶𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗥𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗻, MTech SE alumnus, there for the occasion.

AI should serve local priorities, not be adopted for its own sake.

This was one of the key points shared by 𝗠𝘀 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗟𝗲𝗲 (Chief, Data Science & Digital Sustainability, 𝗡𝗨𝗦-𝗜𝗦𝗦) during the panel discussion "𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙨 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝘼𝙄 𝙈𝙚𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙢𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙡𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝" at 𝗠𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗱𝗵𝗶𝗿 𝗧𝗶𝗸𝘂'𝘀 book launch.

From healthcare and education to food security and public safety, Clara highlighted that AI solutions must respond to the needs and realities of each country. This means building around 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮, cultural context, infrastructure constraints, and the capabilities to deploy and govern AI effectively.

She also noted that storing data locally does not necessarily amount to 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘁𝘆. Meaningful control depends on who holds the legal authority, technical access and intelligence derived from the data.

Today, we celebrated 𝟮𝟱 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 as they completed the 𝗡𝗨𝗦-𝗜𝗦𝗦 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 (𝗗𝗠𝗣𝗣). Joining the celebration were 𝗠𝘀 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗴, Senior Director, Digital Workforce Transformation, 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻; 𝗠𝗿 𝗞𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝗴, CEO, 𝗡𝗨𝗦-𝗜𝗦𝗦; as well as the NUS-ISS senior management team and lecturers.

The DMPP graduates, 𝗠𝘀 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗻𝘂𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘆𝗮 𝗡𝗮𝗶𝗱𝘂 and 𝗠𝘀 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻, reflected on how the programme changed the way they approached their work. Rather than moving straight to solutions, they learnt to ask better questions, challenge assumptions and understand the needs behind the problem before deciding what to build.

The conversation continued during the fireside chat, 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨 𝘽𝙚𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙙 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩, moderated by 𝗠𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗬𝗮𝗽 (Principal Lecturer & Consultant, Digital Products & Platforms Practice, 𝗡𝗨𝗦-𝗜𝗦𝗦), together with 𝗠𝗿 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗟𝗲𝗲 (Group Chief Information Officer, 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆) and 𝗠𝗿 𝗥𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗴 (Chief Technology Officer, 𝗘𝗥𝗔 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲). From leading teams and navigating competing priorities to making evidence-based decisions and adapting to AI, the discussion reinforced an important lesson: strong product leadership is not about having all the answers. It is about understanding the problem deeply, empowering others to innovate, and remaining willing to change course when the evidence calls for it.

Congratulations once again to our graduates on this meaningful milestone. May this be the beginning of many more opportunities to build products and platforms that create lasting impact.
