Have something you need to pay for? Perhaps Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) is an option! It’s the fastest-growing online payment method in Singapore and allows you to defer payment with no extra charge. How does it work? And will it make you spend beyond your means?

Check out this CNA interview and hear the success story of our BIT alumni and founder of the first BNPL mover in the Singapore market.

Hizam Ismail is the co-founder and CEP of Rely, a leading "buy now pay later" platform that enables retailers to tap on the evolving needs of Millennials and Gen Z shoppers and power a brand new shopping experience for their stores.

Driven by his insights as a Millennial and his experiences in the alternative lending space, Hizam and his co-founders launched Rely in 2018, a platform that enables retailers to offer shoppers the ability to split their purchase into interest-free payments at the point of sale.

Check out Plan Pals – a revolutionary 3-in-1 project management application that will enhance your ability to manage time, communication and even your personal finances! Thanks to an enterprising group of Yr 3 students from the Diploma in Business Information Technology, this app is designed to make you super-efficient by enabling you to stay ahead of your tasks and goals, and also use AI to track and predict your expenses.

Group members, Muhammad Edrin Bin Abdul Rahman, Mah Jun Gong, Umar Bin Abdul Aziz, Gwyn Soh Yun Yi, Stefanie Peh Xin Yan and Lim Chong Wei, recently showcased Plan Pals, at their virtual diploma show.

“As students, we are always juggling a few things at the same time, like classes, project work meetings, CCAs and part-time work. It can get quite tough to stay on top of things at times. So we created this app to ensure that we can carry on with all our activities while efficiently keeping track of everything at one go!”, said Edrin.

"With the Covid-19 situation escalating, I became anxious and worried. My parents encouraged me to expand my job search and explore other fields. Their advice pushed me to think outside the box. I knew I needed to broaden my search and further develop my skills to stand out. I also kept abreast of the latest government initiatives for fresh graduates.

After doing some research, I decided to pick up some basic data visualisation and programming skills on Udemy which was fully covered by my SkillsFuture credit. Looking back, my decision to focus my time and energy on upskilling myself, so that I will be able to seize new opportunities when the economy recovers, was the right thing to do.

To those that are still job hunting, don’t give up — this is a marathon and not a sprint. Stay hungry, and keep pushing on!"

In this instalment of Jobseekers’ Diaries, Mr Daniel Ng Zheng Jie, an accountancy graduate from the National University of Singapore Business School, describes the ups and downs of his job search journey which began when he started his final year in university in August 2019.

The economic impact of COVID-19 is just one external force that will shape your career prospects and trajectory.
