The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine), a partnership between Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) and Imperial College London (Imperial), is training a generation of doctors who will put patients at the centre of their exemplary medical care. The School’s primary clinical partner is the National Healthcare Group, a leader in public healthcare recognised for the quality o

f its medical expertise, facilities and teaching. Named after local philanthropist Tan Sri Dato Lee Kong Chian, the School, which was officially opened by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on 28 August 2017, is a model for innovative medical education and a centre for transformative research. Graduates of the five-year undergraduate medical degree programme that started in 2013 will have a strong understanding of the scientific basis of medicine, along with interdisciplinary subjects including engineering, technology, business and the humanities. Its first doctors will graduate in 2018 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), awarded jointly by NTU Singapore and Imperial. In Part 2 of the Dean’s Blog, Prof Joseph Sung reflects on The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch and offers a powerful reminder that in medicine, true success goes beyond exams, achievements, and titles. It is shaped by purpose, resilience, and how we respond to challenges along the way.

These experiences are not just obstacles, but opportunities that build character and deepen our sense of meaning. What defines a great doctor is not only clinical skill, but also empathy, integrity, and how we care for our patients as people.

LKCMedicine took part in “Coffee Chat with NTU” last Saturday, an engagement event for pre-tertiary students to gain a holistic overview of the university’s programmes ☕️

Prospective students interested in medicine spoke with our staff, faculty, students and alumni, asking thoughtful questions about the NTU Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery programme, as well as how our current medical students balance the rigours of medical school with the realities of being a doctor in today’s healthcare landscape – conversations we were more than happy to have.

For aspiring medical students, don’t forget to take the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) between July and September this year. 📖🧠🩺

What if digital transformation could be accelerated to help LKCMedicine excel? In June last year, the school established the Accelerating Digital Excellence and Process Transformation (ADEPT) Office to drive LKCMedicine’s digital capabilities in support of its growing student and faculty population.

This week, the ADEPT Office clinched the OpenGov Asia Recognition of Excellence (ROE) Awards 2026 at the 11th Annual Singapore OpenGov CXO Leadership Forum, in recognition of its bold and innovative approach to digital transformation.

Its initiatives have boosted productivity, streamlined operations and empowered employees through the development and deployment of AI tools and automation. These include the automated Data Analytics Engine for LKCMedicine’s Office of Research, a smart meeting transcriber, and expanded staff access to AI tools.

🩸 Could a simple blood test help identify youths at risk of developing psychosis earlier?

Co-led by ’s Assistant Professor Wilson Goh and Institute of Mental Health (IMH)’s Senior Consultant and Clinician-Scientist Dr Jimmy Lee, who is also Associate Professor (Clinical Practice) at LKCMedicine, researchers from both organisations have identified blood-based biomarkers that may help predict the risk of psychosis in Asian youths.

Published in Translational Psychiatry, the study analysed protein patterns in blood plasma and found that these biomarkers could potentially complement clinical assessments, enabling earlier identification and intervention for at-risk individuals.

🧠 Drawing on IMH’s landmark Longitudinal Youth at Risk Study (LYRIKS), the research advances our understanding of the biological basis of psychosis and supports the development of more precise diagnostic tools for mental health care.

🧠🩸 Predicting before it develops? A new study by Institute of Mental Health Singapore and the NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine may bring a step closer to that reality.

The researchers have identified blood-based protein markers that could help predict which at-risk youths are more likely to develop psychosis.

The findings could help clinicians identify vulnerable youths earlier, enabling closer monitoring and potentially preventing the onset of severe mental illness. https://ntu.sg/PredictingPsychosis

final-year student James Wang is rethinking stroke rehabilitation beyond physical recovery. Inspired by a patient who regained mobility but struggled with cognitive tasks, James co-developed SemperStroke, a low-cost virtual reality app that helps stroke survivors rebuild both physical and cognitive abilities through simple, game-like exercises at home.

With support from NTU’s innovation ecosystem and clinical experts, the student-led team is now preparing for clinical trials to evaluate how the tool can improve patients’ quality of life.

LKCMedicine is part of a major step forward in cancer prevention and early detection in Singapore.

The Research Institute for Cancer Prevention, Screening and Early Detection (RISE), jointly led by National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) and NTU Singapore, has announced two groundbreaking studies aimed at improving how cancers are detected and prevented in our local population.

🏥 Focusing on individuals with metabolic risk factors, LKCMedicine’s Cancer Risk Assessments and Early detection (CRAnE) study will test multi-cancer risk assessment methods in primary care to tailor screening and prevention advice, so that individuals complete the screening tests most relevant to their risks.

🔬 The other, an NCCS-led Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) clinical trial will evaluate the use of multi-cancer early detection tests to identify early-stage cancers in individuals with elevated risk due to pre-malignant conditions or hereditary cancer syndromes.

Together, these studies aim to generate evidence that can shape future cancer screening policies and improve preventive healthcare for Singaporeans.
