The Master of Science (Environmental Management) (MEM) programme turns 25 this year and you are invited to its silver jubilee celebrations!

Join a special evening featuring a 4-course dinner and the 3rd edition of the Environmental Management Leadership Lecture (EMLL).

This year’s keynote on Climate Leadership in an Era of Global Fragmentation will be delivered by Ms Jessica Cheam, founder and CEO of Eco-Business, followed by a Q&A session moderated by Ms Melissa Low, head of NUS Sustainability Academy. Mr Tony Oposa, an environmental law and policy consultant from the Philippines, will be the special guest at the dinner.

There will also be alumni-led seminars in the afternoon where you get to hear from distinguished alumni of the MEM program.

In water villages in Semporna, Sabah, many stateless communities lack access to government waste disposal services, leaving plastic waste to accumulate in surrounding waters.

Working with local non-governmental organisation Borneo Komrad, Thai Le Minh Hoah, who majors in Chemistry (NUS Department of Chemistry) and minors in Pharmaceutical Science (NUS Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Dept) and Chinese Language Studies, set out to address the problem by designing a barrier to intercept waste before it reaches the village. Through repeat visits to Semporna, her team tested and refined prototypes to suit local water conditions and infrastructure.

The project was part of NUS College's Impact Experience programme exploring the culture and identity of the Bajau Laut - an indigenous sea community in Sabah - and questions of representation and stereotypes surrounding them. For Minh Hoah, this engagement helped ensure that her project was grounded in local realities while building awareness around environmental issues.

“This work not only advanced my team’s technical problem-solving abilities but also strengthened our leadership, communication and organisational skills as we liaised with external partners,” she says.

The NUS Sustainability CONNECT festival enters recess week this week with a total of 17 events!

While a number are already fully booked, there are some like the visit to Pulau Ubin by RVRC GreenRangers and Ridge View Photography which still have a few slots left!
