As a faculty member of the University of Ljubljana we fulfil two role
s – educational and research. Our curriculum covers several subjects that deal with the basics of physical metallurgy, materials, materials design and synthesis as well as a broad range of characterisation techniques. We preform basic research required for the understanding of natural phenomena in the fields of materials science and metallurgy. Our research is mainly focused on processes covering nucleation, crystallisation and solidification of alloys. We cooperate with other chairs of the Department of Materials and Metallurgy as well as other faculties of the University of Ljubljana and national institutes (IMT, IJS, KI) and thus have the ability to perform a broad range of analysis such as thermodynamical analysis using CALPHAD software, the study and optimisation of casting processes and defects using MAGMASOFT, material characterisation using LM/SEM/TEM/EDS/XRD/XRF.
