Welcome to our online community of students and prospective students, staff, friends and followers of the University of Nova Gorica, Slovenia! For those of you who are already part of us, this is a perfect place to learn about what’s currently going on at our university, or “UNG” as we call it, and what’s coming up. While all those eager to get to know us can read about the advantages of joining us. No, this isn’t UNG’s official FB page (if you’re looking for that, then go to “Univerza v Novi Gorici / University of Nova Gorica” FB page or to www.ung.si), it rather complements it with extra and less formal (hm, occaionally also funny or even crazy) news. I might actually post anything that I might consider to be of any interest to my students, futire students and the rest of you in a particular moment. Simply to create a sense of community, to bring you all together or, sometimes, to (hopefully) get my students in a better mood ;) This is definitely a student-centered page. Besides describing the advantages of studying at our university, reporting about our past events and sharing the invitations to the upcoming events, I’m also trying to give you an insight into UNG’s activities from a different perspective, from the perspective of a dedicated teacher, a passionate educational worker, always keen on working with people and sharing great news about my (and the rest of UNG) students and their achievements, may it be a huge academic success or simply a small everyday achievement or a happy event that has brought a smile on somebody’s face – like our setting up the Christmas tree in the UNG’s main hall (or rather: hallS, as this tree ritual has obviously turned into a “coolest X-mas tree” contest in which more UNG’s campuses are now involved); may it be writing about some interesting stuff that we do in class, an interesting student project that we’re currently involved in, or any info about various student-related issues – student accommodation, student job offers in the local area, mobility opportunities, extra curricular activities and various options of spending one’s leisure time (yeah, including student parties), and info & tips for our international students (= where best pizza is served, what the coolest option for an afternoon trip is and what’s worth seeing in the region, what does “pinela” mean etc.). Well, to all those of our students, colleagues, fans and followers, who come from a different region/abroad, we’re trying our best to present our beautiful region, where our university and its schools are located, and the whole of our wonderful, clean and hospitable tiny country and its rich history, culture and traditions. And yes, whenever possible, I’m trying to write about people, not just facts. So student & graduate testimonials about their studies at UNG, greetings from our students on mobilities abroad etc. are often “on the menu”.
I hope that through following this FB page you will be able to sense the individual approach that UNG has towards the students. I believe the individual approach towards our students is actually one of UNG’s main assets. You will never feel merely “a number” here, we will do our best to help you develop your talents to the fullest. Do not expect massive studies here – instead, you will be studying in small groups, benefiting from the extremely favourable teacher-student number ratio, practically oriented studies and numerous opportunities for engaging in research, student projects and other active forms of learning, which will undoubtedly boost your future employment prospects. Hopefully, even more professional athletes from the region will drop the idea of not going to university and getting a degree still during their sports careers – at UNG we offer them specially tailored modes of study and support the concept of the double-career of athletes. Still looking for a reason why to study at UNG? If you feel “unique” in terms of your future professional career ideas & wishes, then: why not decide for any of the less common, unique but promising professions – astrophysicist, expert in digital humanities or enologist, for instance. Our academic offer remains equally unique on the PhD level – as far as I know, UNG is the only university in the world offering PhD studies in Karstology! And I recommend to all those who don’t know what “karstology” means to google this word straight away, or else they might miss a unique opportunity of learning about & visiting Slovenia’s perhaps most famous tourist attraction(s).
