Amoud University is a non-governmental, national University and open to all aspiring candidates who fulfill the admission requirements without discrimination based on sex, ethnic, origin, creed, color or religion. The idea of establishing Amoud University was conceived by four intellectuals working in th

e Gulf in 1994 and was formally proposed in a workshop held in Borama on August 6, 1996. The workshop agreed to the proposal and adopted a resolution for the establishment of the University by 1997. Amoud University started its first admission examination on September 1997 and selected 66 students to undergo a nine-month intensive English course. The University commenced its undergraduate program on 4 November 1998 and admitted the first freshman class, setting a landmark in the history of higher education in this country.

The Amoud University Research and Innovation Center is immensely proud to extend its warmest congratulations to Ms. Hibo Abdilahi Omer and her co-authors for the publication of their study, "Factors associated with self-reported mental health difficulties in Somalia: a national health and demographic survey analysis of populations aged 10 years and older," in the prestigious international journal, Global Health Action.

This research addresses one of the most neglected and stigmatized pillars of public health in post-conflict Somalia—mental health. By analyzing data from 49,389 individuals, this study provides the first nationally representative look into the psychological well-being of the Somali people. It courageously moves past the "silence" surrounding mental distress to identify the biological and social stressors that disproportionately affect the most vulnerable members of our society.

As a scholar associated with Amoud University, Ms. Hibo exemplifies the "Amoud Family spirit"—a dedication to rigorous, evidence-based inquiry that seeks to improve the human condition. 2. The Mind-Body Connection: The research identifies a critical link between physical and mental health, with a history of stroke, chronic back pain, and high blood pressure serving as major correlates for mental distress.

3. Nomadic Resilience vs. Urban Stress: In a fascinating cultural finding, the study highlights how traditional nomadic living and formal education act as protective buffers, whereas urban residents face higher risks due to the erosion of traditional support structures.

The Africa–Australia Universities Network (AAUN) Australia Forum 2026 officially opened today at Edith Cowan University (ECU) City Campus in Perth, Western Australia, bringing together university leaders, academics, researchers, and partners from Africa and Australia.

Amoud University is represented at the Forum by a delegation led by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Muse Jibril, President of Amoud University, accompanied by Mr. Mohamed Heban Awale, Director of International Partnerships and Projects.

The Forum provides a platform for strengthening Australia–Africa cooperation in higher education, research, innovation, knowledge exchange, and institutional partnerships. The opening programme brought together senior university leaders, government representatives, diplomats, and other stakeholders from Australia and Africa.

A key highlight of the programme is the AAUN Early Career Researchers (ECR) Hackathon, chaired by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Muse Jibril, President of Amoud University. The session brings together nine competing teams representing universities from across Australia and Africa.

Amoud University’s participation reflects its commitment to expanding international academic partnerships, advancing collaborative research and innovation, promoting knowledge exchange, and strengthening institutional capacity.

Throughout the Forum, the Amoud University delegation is engaging with university leaders and other stakeholders to explore opportunities for meaningful and sustainable collaboration between Amoud University and institutions across Australia and Africa.

This essential research addresses one of Somalia’s most critical health priorities: protecting our children from measles. By utilizing advanced geospatial mapping and multilevel modeling, Dr. Ilyas and his team have provided a high-resolution "health map" of the nation. The study identifies exactly where vaccination gaps exist and why, offering a data-driven strategy to move Somalia toward the 95% "herd immunity" threshold needed to prevent deadly outbreaks.

As a leader within the Amoud University faculty, Dr. Ilyas exemplifies the "Amoud Family spirit"—demonstrating that academic excellence and clinical leadership can drive profound social change. This work reinforces our university’s commitment to using rigorous science to achieve health equity and development across all Somali regions.

Key Highlights of the Study:

1. Mapping the Vaccination Gap: The study reveals a significant "North-South" divide, identifying northern regions like Togdheer as vaccination hotspots, while highlighting urgent "coldspots" in southern regions like Gedo and Bakool that require immediate intervention.

2. The Togdheer Model: The research notes that children in Togdheer have 6.3 times higher odds of being vaccinated, providing a successful localized model that can be studied and replicated elsewhere.

3. Drivers of Success: The findings emphasize that maternal education and middle-income stability are the strongest predictors of vaccine uptake, calling for a dual focus on healthcare delivery and women’s literacy.

4. A Call for Mobile Outreach: The authors advocate for expanding nomadic-sensitive mobile vaccination units to bridge the geographic inequities identified in the geospatial analysis.

This critical research tackles a neglected but widespread public health challenge—fungal scalp infections that affect the dignity and well-being of millions of children. By synthesizing decades of data, the study reveals that tinea capitis is "hyperendemic" in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a staggering 34% prevalence rate. Dr. Hodan’s work highlights that this is more than a medical issue; it is a social one, contributing to bullying, stigma, and school absenteeism among the youth.
