Adal Medical University Research and Academic Affairs Office proudly congratulates Dr. Ahmed Moumin Abdilahi on the successful publication of his important research article entitled:
“Prevalence and Clinical Predictors of Stroke in Somaliland: Findings from a Retrospective Hospital-Based Study.”
Published in the reputable journal Atención Primaria (Elsevier), this significant scholarly contribution reflects Dr. Ahmed’s strong commitment to advancing clinical research and addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases in Somaliland. Through rigorous scientific investigation, this study provides valuable hospital-based evidence on stroke prevalence and its major clinical predictors, further strengthening Adal Medical University’s leadership in impactful, evidence-driven health research.
This publication highlights the expanding research capacity of our institution and serves as an inspiration for faculty members, medical students, and emerging researchers to actively engage in high-quality studies that inform clinical practice and public health policy.
Key Contributions of the Study Include:
1. Public Health Significance
Stroke remains a major global health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where prevention and early management are often limited. This study underscores the seriousness of stroke as a growing health burden in Somaliland and emphasizes the urgent need for targeted preventive strategies.
2. Local Clinical Evidence Generation
Using a retrospective hospital-based cohort design at Adal Hospital in Borama, the study analyzed medical records of adult patients to determine the prevalence and distribution of stroke types. The findings revealed a hospital-based stroke prevalence of 5.35%, with ischemic strokes accounting for 51.7% and hemorrhagic strokes 48.3%, providing essential baseline data for Somaliland.
3. Identification of Strong Independent Predictors
Through multivariable logistic regression analysis, the study identified key independent predictors of stroke, including:
• Hypertension
• Atrial fibrillation
• Previous history of stroke
These findings reinforce the importance of aggressive screening, early detection, and proper management of cardiovascular risk factors in primary healthcare settings.
4. Implications for Prevention and Health Policy
The results highlight the critical role of hypertension control and cardiovascular risk management in reducing stroke incidence. The study provides evidence-based recommendations for strengthening secondary prevention strategies, improving diagnostic capacity, and enhancing public awareness regarding stroke risk factors.
Stroke continues to impose substantial health and economic burdens worldwide. Research of this nature is essential for guiding prevention programs, informing national health strategies, and integrating non-communicable disease management into primary healthcare systems in Somaliland.
Adal Medical University proudly congratulates Dr. Ahmed Moumin Abdilahi on this commendable academic achievement and applauds his dedication to advancing clinical research that directly improves patient outcomes and community well-being.
We remain committed to supporting high-impact research that contributes to national development and strengthens healthcare delivery systems.
