This important study examined the extent of livelihood diversification and the factors influencing diversification among rural households in the Maroodijeex Region of Somaliland. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combined household surveys, key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and field observations to investigate how rural communities respond to recurrent droughts, climate vulnerability, and economic uncertainty.
The findings revealed that off-farm and non-farm activities contributed 63% of total household income, while on-farm activities accounted for 37%. The study further demonstrated that access to productive assets such as irrigation, land, and livestock significantly influences livelihood diversification, highlighting its role as an important risk-management strategy for vulnerable households in drought-prone environments.

โข Wage labor provided the largest share of household income (34.8%), followed by livestock production (27.7%).
โข The mean Simpson Diversification Index (SDI) was 0.275, with 39.3% of households remaining specialized.
โข Livelihood diversification was positively associated with irrigation access, landholding size, livestock ownership, and age of the household head.
โข Credit access, extension services, and market distance were not statistically significant determinants.
โข The study identified livelihood diversification as a key strategy for managing drought-related risks and economic uncertainty.
