Plant Disease Diagnosis Students Explore AI-Powered Disease Identification and Field Survey Practices.
The Department of Plant Pathology, Faculty of Agriculture at Kamphaeng Saen, organized a hands-on practical learning activity for the course 02031481 Diagnosis of Plant Diseases, aimed at building students’ skills in diagnosing and surveying plant diseases under real field conditions. The activity was led by Special Expert Lecturer Asst. Prof. Dr. Pissawan Chiamsombat, who delivered lectures, demonstrations, and guided practical sessions throughout the day, with the participation of Asst. Prof. Dr. Siriporn Donnua, course coordinator, along with faculty members from the Department of Plant Pathology.
The morning session (9:00–12:00) featured lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice on the topic of “Using AI for Plant Disease Diagnosis from Photographs”, integrating artificial intelligence technology into plant pathology education. Students learned how to apply digital tools to diagnose plant disease symptoms quickly and accurately.
In the afternoon (13:00–16:00), students conducted field surveys of plant diseases in vegetable plots at the Tropical Vegetable Research and Development Center, Department of Horticulture, recording data using the KoboToolbox application — an internationally recognized field data collection platform. This allowed students to practice assessing disease severity and outbreak patterns under actual growing conditions.
This activity aligns with the course objectives, which aim to equip students with the ability to diagnose plant diseases caused by various pathogens as well as abnormalities caused by abiotic factors. Beginning with field survey and disease assessment, students are guided toward providing effective recommendations for plant disease management.
Special thanks are extended to the Tropical Vegetable Research and Development Center, Department of Horticulture, for generously providing the field site for this practical learning experience.
