Field Visit to Sri Lanka
Reported by Ven. Ananda (BA2 student)
On 7th May, 2026, Ven. Zhen Sheng, the Director of Rector Office, International Buddhist College (IBC) and I visited Sri Lanka. Firstly, we had the great honour of visiting Malwathu Maha Viharaya and meeting the Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayaka Thero. In addition, the Mahanayaka Thero kindly presented Ven. Zhen Sheng with a Buddha statue as a sacred memento of the visit.

During the journey, we also had the opportunity to visit many sacred places throughout Sri Lanka. In particular, we visited five Pirivena institutions to learn about their educational activities and to discuss the future educational development of students in those institutions. Several monks also came to personally meet Ven. Zhen Sheng at Galketiya Purana Viharaya.

Moreover, Ven. Zhen Sheng also received gifts and offerings from the monks and lay devotees during the trip. He respectfully re-offered these donations to the respective temples with great generosity and humility.

We returned to Thailand on 13th May, 2026, marking the end of our memorable visit at Sri Lanka. Last but not least, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the monastic and lay communities concerned, together with all those who contributed directly or indirectly to making this trip both meaningful and successful.

Field visit to Vientiane, Laos
On the 11th of May, an International Buddhist College (IBC) representative, Dr. Ooi Eng Jin, Dean of Faculty of Buddhist Studies, visited two Buddhist monastic high schools in Vientiane, Laos: Dongdok Buddhist High School and Sokpalung Buddhist High School.

The objective is to promote collaboration and present the IBC academic programs to students. The IBC programs may be particularly beneficial for monastic students, as IBC offers training in the reading of Buddhist primary texts in their original languages, including Pāli, Sanskrit, Classical Chinese, and Tibetan. Furthermore, as a non-sectarian institution, IBC provides exposure to various Buddhist traditions, thereby broadening the students' understanding of the Buddhist world.

The visit was organized by IBC and hosted by our own IBC alumni, Xayalath, Silar, and Chanh, who have achieved success in their careers since graduation; one is an entrepreneur in real estate, while the others hold executive positions in international organizations.

The trip has proven to be fruitful and productive. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all members who contributed directly or indirectly to the success of this trip.

Travel Report: Malaysia
8 May - 10 May 2026
Reported by: Yang Xueqin (BA2 student)
This report documents a three-day visit to Malaysia from 8 to 10 May 2026, during which I engaged in both Dharma activities and cultural exploration across two cities - Alor Setar and Penang.

8 May - Alor Setar
The trip began in Alor Setar, where I was warmly welcomed by a group of Buddhist laypeople. Their hospitality was generous and sincere.

In the morning, we sat together and listened to a Dharma talk. Afterwards, the hosts prepared a wonderful lunch featuring a variety of local dishes, giving me a good taste of the regional cuisine.

In the afternoon, they kindly took me to visit the Museum Kota Kuala Kedah, a historical fort museum situated at the mouth of the Kedah River. It was an interesting glimpse into the history of the region.

On the way back, we stopped to enjoy cendol - a traditional cold sweet dessert made with green rice flour jelly, coconut milk, and palm sugar syrup. It was a refreshing treat in the hot weather, and a perfect way to end a pleasant day.

9 May - Penang (Georgetown)
This day was spent in Penang, guided by Sister Ping Ling from Than Hsiang Temple. She picked me up from the temple at around 11:00 a.m. and we drove into Georgetown together. Along the way, she pointed out the various sights and shared stories about the area.
We visited Goddess of Mercy Temple (Kuan Yin Teng), one of the oldest and most well-known Chinese temples in Penang. We also stopped to see the famous bicycle street mural - perhaps the most recognisable piece of street art in Penang, beloved by visitors from around the world.

Passing by a Nyonya restaurant, Sister Ping Ling gave me a brief introduction to Peranakan (Nyonya) cuisine - a unique culinary tradition that blends Chinese and Malay influences, born from the Straits Chinese community.

Around 1:00 p.m., we met up with Sister Ping Ling's friends - Sister Beng Choo and Sister Julie. Together, the four of us went to a well-known Indian restaurant in Little India. It was my first time dining at an Indian restaurant, and I am glad to say that all four of us were very satisfied with the food.

After lunch, Sister Ping Ling recommended a famous cendol stall in Penang. There was a long queue of people waiting - a clear sign of how popular and well-loved this dessert spot is.

At around 3:30 p.m., they brought me to Dewan Sri Pinang (Penang State Hall) to attend a comedy show - VITAL STATS by Douglas Lim. It was a unique and memorable experience. Through his humour, I caught interesting glimpses of Malaysian political life, social issues, and everyday culture.

Manora Traditional Dance
Reported by Nayani Bag (MA1 student)
On 1st May 2026, we had a wonderful opportunity to watch a traditional Manora dance performance, kindly arranged by our Thai staff, Sister Mod, at her home. Her brother, who is a master performer, led the performance. Manora dance (also known as Nora dance) is a traditional performing art from southern Thailand and is considered one of the most important cultural dances in the region. It is a classical dance-drama that combines dance, music, singing, and storytelling, often based on ancient folklore and spiritual beliefs.

The performers wore colourful and captivating costumes, including decorative crowns and long golden fingernails that enhanced the elegance and expressiveness of their hand movements. The performance was accompanied by traditional musical instruments, creating a lively and rhythmic atmosphere. Every moment was graceful and full of meaning, and we truly enjoyed the experience.

The performance was deeply captivating, and the hospitality we received was warm and heartfelt. The pleasant evening atmosphere created a peaceful and refreshing environment, making the entire experience even more enjoyable and memorable. We were also kindly invited to share dinner together.

On April 9, 2026, we were delighted to welcome a group of 70 alumni from Chung Ling High School to the International Buddhist College (IBC).

Celebrating the Chinese New Year and Gift Exchange Event at IBC
----------------------------------------------

Legend has it that on the last night of every lunar year, a mythical beast named “Nian” would emerge from either the sea or the mountains to terrorize people in Ancient China. Nian’s victims learned that the beast could be driven away by loud noises, bright lights, and the color red. The legend of Nian helps explain why many who celebrate Chinese New Year still do so with fireworks, lanterns, and lots of red.

While lacking the flash and bang of fireworks, the International Buddhist College celebrated Chinese New Year during an hour-long event held on February 25 in its main lobby. The space was beautifully adorned with dozens of red lanterns illuminated by ceiling lights. The smell of incense filled the room, along with the hope of attendees for an auspicious beginning to the new lunar year...............................
