The Drone Revolution: How Unmanned Systems Are Transforming Both Warfare and War Crimes in Ukraine

📅 Friday, 5 June 2026
⏰ 1:00 – 2:00 PM (Bangkok Time)
💻 Online via Zoom (Lecture will be conducted in English)

This event is co-organized by the Centre for European Studies and the Nelson Mandela Center, Chulalongkorn University.

Join us for a timely and thought-provoking lecture by Michael Sullivan, Adjunct Professorial Lecturer in Justice, Law & Criminology at American University, Washington, DC.

This lecture explores how the rapid proliferation of drone technology in the Ukraine conflict has fundamentally reshaped modern warfare—and introduced new challenges for international humanitarian law. From commercial quadcopters used at the tactical level to kamikaze drones targeting infrastructure, Ukraine has become a critical testing ground for unmanned systems.

Drawing on legal expertise and emerging documentation practices, the session will examine how drone warfare is transforming targeting, surveillance, command decisions, and the psychological realities of combat—while also creating new categories of potential war crimes that existing legal frameworks struggle to address.
