Project Progress

Advancing Redox Flow Battery Technology for Sustainable Utility-Scale Offshore Energy Storage System

The research team from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) has received research funding from the Cess Research Fund under the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Authority (MTJA) to develop Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) technology for utility-scale energy storage and its integration with renewable energy for offshore applications.

The project has made significant progress across three work packages. Work Package 1 (WP1) focuses on assessing the potential, feasibility, and economic viability of energy storage systems for offshore applications. HOMER, a tool for energy system modelling and analysis, is being used to evaluate and compare electricity generation configurations, as well as approaches for integrating renewable energy with energy storage systems.

In Work Package 2 (WP2), the research team has developed and tested a single-cell VRFB platform capable of producing reproducible experimental results. Through carbon-felt electrode conditioning combined with an interdigitated flow-field design, the system achieved a maximum power density of 0.615 W/cm², with approximately 88% voltage efficiency, 91% coulombic efficiency, and 79% energy efficiency. These results provide an important foundation for further development and scaling toward a 5 kW VRFB stack.

For Work Package 3 (WP3), a system model has been developed for platforms in the Malaysia–Thailand Joint Development Area (JDA). In addition, a laboratory for VRFB testing has been designed, together with documentation related to the IEC 62932-2-1 standard, to support the development of an Energy Management System (EMS), system integration, and performance testing in the next stage.

Overall, the progress achieved provides an important foundation for the project, ranging from system feasibility assessment and cell-level VRFB development to preparation for scaling up and integrating a 5 kW prototype VRFB system, supporting future real-world applications.

⸻

🌱 Project Benefits

The project aims to develop knowledge, technology, and technical capabilities in VRFB energy storage systems for offshore applications. It will enhance the capability to integrate renewable energy sources, such as offshore wind power and floating solar photovoltaic systems, with greater efficiency and stability.

In addition, the project supports the development of energy storage technology for utility-scale applications, helping enhance the reliability and continuity of electricity supply, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and support the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Ultimately, this will contribute to a more flexible and sustainable energy system in the future.
