Every prejudice, every belief, every ideology is built from something as small as the "words" we use over and over until they feel completely ordinary — so ordinary that we rarely stop to notice everything they carry beneath the surface. Linguistics teaches us that language is arbitrary: in principle, we could choose to call anything, or any group of people, by any name we like. Yet every society ends up naming things differently.
This article unpacks the words used to describe "women who love women" in English and in Thai, revealing the lens through which each society views this group — and where their underlying assumptions converge or diverge.
Read on, and you'll see that "words" are the concrete outcome of a society's thinking — and, at the same time, the very first button that sets the direction in which that thinking unfolds.
