Thailand’s Heat Pump Landscape ⚡️🏭🌏
Heat pumps are gaining global recognition as a key technology for enhancing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike conventional systems that rely on combustion to generate heat, heat pumps transfer thermal energy from external sources such as air, water, or the ground, enabling them to provide the same level of heating or cooling with significantly lower energy consumption. As Thailand advances its efforts to decarbonize thermal energy use in buildings and industry, heat pumps are emerging as an important solution to support national climate and energy goals.

Industry representatives visit JGSEE for technical consultation on environmental data analysis 🏭🌏
On 28 April 2026, representatives from the Federation of Thai Industries - Petrochemical Industry Club (FTIPC), the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) and its Environmental Monitoring and Control Center (EMCC), and the Petroleum and Energy Institute of Thailand (PEIT) visited JGSEE at the Sattabongkot Auditorium, KMUTT (Bang Khun Thian Campus).
The delegation met with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kasemsan Manomaiphiboon to consult on a technique for jointly analyzing hazardous air pollutants, specifically volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and weather conditions at a major industrial complex in Rayong.
It is hoped that this technical meeting will lead to better data interpretation and deeper insights into the challenging VOC issues the industrial complex has faced.

JGSEE Hosts CGM Open House Webinar 🌏
On 23 April 2026, the Center of Greenhouse Gas Management (CGM) at the Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE), King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), hosted a CGM Open House webinar to invite members of the KMUTT community to participate in its greenhouse gas verification team. The event was conducted via Zoom.
The webinar opened with welcome remarks by Professor Navadol Laosiripojana, Director of JGSEE. This was followed by a presentation from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amnat Chidthaisong, Deputy Director of JGSEE, who provided an overview of CGM’s background and operational processes. He also introduced key concepts related to carbon footprinting—namely the Carbon Footprint of Product (CFP) and Carbon Footprint for Organization (CFO)—as well as carbon credit mechanisms such as the Thailand Voluntary Emission Reduction (T-VER) program. In addition, he outlined CGM’s core services, including auditing, consulting, and training.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sirintornthep Towprayoon, Advisor to JGSEE and Head of CGM, presented on validation and verification processes for CFO and T-VER projects. The session also covered CGM’s organizational structure, roles and responsibilities, and pathways for becoming a CGM partner. The session concluded with a Q&A segment, allowing participants to engage with the speakers before the webinar closed.
The webinar attracted strong interest from KMUTT members, supporting the university’s ongoing efforts to advance toward carbon neutrality and sustainability.

Bonjour from Lyon! 👋🇫🇷 Sending an update from the CNRS lab! We are so excited to share that Ms. Punjarat Khongchamnana, a Ph.D. candidate in the Sustainable Energy Systems Program at JGSEE, is currently on a six-month research stay at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (CNRS Laboratory).

This journey is made possible with the generous support of The Scholarship for the Development of High Quality Research Graduates in Science and Technology Petchra Pra Jom Klao Ph.D. Research Scholarship (KMUTT – NSTDA).

She is working on an experimental study on the anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) process involving alkaline lignin. In simpler terms, her primary objective is the depolymerization of lignin samples through AEM water electrolysis. She is looking for ways to maximize the potential of lignin in generating valuable hydrogen, oxygen, and chemicals.

The expected outcome will contribute to the development of sustainable energy and biomass conversion technologies, aligning with global efforts toward renewable energy transition. From electrochemical performance tests to optimizing the AEM water electrolysis process, it is a busy but incredibly rewarding time for her. Let's continue to support her academic journey!

Thailand’s Roadmap to Reduce Plastic Waste and Build a Circular Economy 🛤️♻️
Thailand generates approximately 2 million tons of plastic waste annually, accounting for around 12% of the country’s total solid waste. With relatively low recycling rates, a significant share of this plastic waste remains improperly managed, contributing to environmental pollution on land and in marine ecosystems.

To address these challenges, Thailand introduced the Roadmap on Plastic Waste Management 2018–2030 as a national framework to guide policies and actions toward more sustainable plastic use and improved waste management. In parallel, the country has implemented a range of pilot initiatives and systemic interventions to strengthen plastic waste management and accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

ประเทศไทยสร้างขยะพลาสติกประมาณ 2 ล้านตันต่อปี คิดเป็น 12% ของขยะมูลฝอยทั้งหมดของประเทศ ด้วยอัตราการรีไซเคิลที่ยังอยู่ในระดับต่ำ ขยะพลาสติกจำนวนมากจึงยังไม่ได้รับการจัดการอย่างเหมาะสม ส่งผลให้เกิดมลพิษทั้งบนบกและในระบบนิเวศทางทะเล

JGSEE, Informa Markets Thailand, and Partners Host ASEW 2026 Pre-event Webinar
On 8 April 2026, the Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE), in collaboration with Informa Markets Thailand and its partners, hosted the Asian Sustainable Energy Week (ASEW) 2026 pre-event webinar under the theme “Achieving Net Zero in Asia through Multilateral Partnerships: Building a Full-Spectrum Sustainable Energy Ecosystem.” The webinar was conducted via Zoom and streamed on Informa’s Facebook platform.
Key partners included the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and the Asia Pacific Urban Energy Association (APUEA).
The event opened with welcome remarks by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bundit Fungtammasan, Advisor to the KMUTT President for Research and Innovation. The session was moderated by Dr. Weerawat Chantanakome, Senior Policy Counsel at ERIA, Jakarta, and Honorary Counsellor to Thailand’s Ministry of Energy.
The webinar featured four main sessions: (1) Policy and regional outlook for Asia’s energy transition; (2) Research, technology, and innovation pathways; (3) From policy frameworks to market implementation; and (4) Strengthening partnerships to advance sustainability.
During the Research, Technology, and Innovation Pathways session, Professor Navadol Laosiripojana, Director of JGSEE, delivered a presentation titled “Co-creation Towards Carbon Neutrality.” His presentation highlighted workforce development and capacity-building strategies for Thailand and Southeast Asia, aligned with the country’s commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. He emphasized the role of research and innovation in enabling practical energy transition pathways across the region, focusing on advanced technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), advanced biorefineries, and green hydrogen. He also outlined six strategic priority sectors, core development initiatives including degree programs and professional reskilling, and innovation outputs in entrepreneurship and collaborative research.
Other distinguished speakers included Dr. Nuki Agya Utama, Director of Energy Policy and Head of the Asia Zero Emission Center (AZE Center) at ERIA, who addressed ASEAN energy security in balancing short-term challenges with long-term goals; Dr. Peter Lundberg, Executive Director of APUEA, who discussed transitioning from policy to market implementation through multilateral partnerships; and Ms. Varnnaparn Patanotai, Senior Event Manager at Informa Markets Thailand, who presented on mobilizing markets and industry platforms.
The webinar attracted strong interest, with more than 100 participants joining online via Zoom.

At JGSEE, we are committed to bridging the gap between classroom learning and professional expertise. Our graduate students recently completed their presentations for the 'Waste and Climate Change' course with great success. They demonstrated a solid grasp of the core concepts, delivering outstanding presentations and accurate calculations. We believe this practical knowledge will be highly valuable for their future research and professional paths.

We are profoundly grateful to Dr. Thaworn, Dr. Siwalee, and Dr. Ruenrom for providing our students with invaluable practical knowledge on biogas technology and GHG emissions.

Special thanks to the course instructors, Ajarn Komsilp and Dr. Warinthorn, along with the guest lecturer team, for their significant contribution to our students’ academic growth and for bringing real-world experience into our curriculum.

The Expert will work with the Renewable Energy Sector research team under the CityLab component of the TGC EMC project. In this role, the Expert will develop an innovative electrical vehicles (EV) charging demonstration project and propose strategies for scaling up the technology in areas with available renewable energy resources but limited grid access.
