The 9th Global Conference on Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries ( ) successfully concluded after three days (1–3 October 2025) at the Asian Institute of Technology, Pathum Thani, Thailand, under the theme Transforming Aquaculture and Fisheries for Gender Justice.

Organized by the Gender in Aquaculture & Fisheries Section (GAFS) of the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS) and jointly hosted by the Gender and Development Studies (GDS) and AAquaculture & Aquatic Resources Management (AARM), AITPrograms of Asian Institute of Technology, the conference brought together over 200 participants from across the Asia-Pacific and beyond. It served as a platform to advance dialogue on gender equity and women’s contributions in shaping more inclusive aquatic food systems.

As part of the event, the Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management (AARM) Program showcased a display table featuring aquaria with ornamental fishes, cherry shrimp, Siamese fighting fish, giant freshwater prawn, and tilapia—demonstrating the program’s expertise and diversity of aquaculture research.

In August 2025, seven outstanding women from India, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Thailand joined the PhD program in aquaculture at Aquaculture & Aquatic Resources Management (AARM), AIT. This diverse group represents a new wave of international collaboration and highlights the crucial role of women scientists in shaping the future of aquatic food systems.

Their research interests range from breeding and hatchery innovations, health management, microalgae applications, coastal surveys and fisheries production systems, and gender-inclusive aquaculture development, with a shared mission of building resilient and sustainable solutions for communities worldwide.

We are proud to welcome these future leaders to AARM and look forward to their contributions to global aquaculture research, policies, and practices.

🌊🐟 𝗛𝘂𝘇𝗵𝗼𝘂 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗜𝗧 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

From August 17–30, six students from Huzhou University, China, completed a two-week internship with AIT’s Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management (AARM) Program.

The internship blended lectures on seed production, fish nutrition, and aquaculture vaccinology with hands-on training in Nile tilapia hatchery work, plus visits to catfish, seabass and prawn hatcheries, and Talaad Thai—ASEAN’s largest seafood market.

Reflecting the program, Dr. Krishna R. Salin, Chair of the AIT’s Aquaculture Program remarked: “This internship was designed to give students an authentic learning journey, where they could see and do aquaculture in action.”

The program strengthened technical skills while deepening collaboration between AIT and Huzhou University, following three previous batches of Chinese students experiencing similar aquaculture experiences in Thailand between 2016 and 2019.
