Geni Bhargava, a Master's student in the AARM Program at AIT, completed his industry internship at SyAqua Siam Co., Ltd., gaining hands-on experience in shrimp health management, molecular diagnostics, and broodstock production.

His work contributed to shrimp health and disease research on major pathogens including AHPND and EHP, supporting the selection of disease-resistant lines. He also supported high-health broodstock production at a biofloc-based Broodstock Multiplication Centre (BMC), through biosecurity protocols, water quality management, and quality control practices.

From the aquaculture-rich coastal state of Andhra Pradesh, India, to the forefront of shrimp health research in Thailand — Excellent work, Geni! 👏

Anto, a Master's student in the AARM Program at AIT, completed a three-month internship at HydroNeo — working at the intersection of digital innovation and practical aquaculture.

His work focused on making smart farming tools genuinely accessible to shrimp farmers: redesigning the app's feed tracking feature for ease of use, field-testing the HydroNeo Mini Controller for water quality monitoring, and adapting the platform for farmers in India and Indonesia through localisation. He also assessed sensor needs for hatchery environments.

One standout outcome: automated farm management systems demonstrated nearly 20% savings in farm energy costs — a concrete measure of what well-designed aquaculture technology can achieve on the ground.

📄 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀: "Genetic Divergence and Heterosis in Crossbred Oreochromis niloticus: Performance of Chitralada 4 × Super Black Hybrids"

Thapeetha's study tackled a fundamental question in tilapia production: can strategic crossbreeding between genetically distinct strains produce hybrid offspring that outperform their purebred parents?

Her approach was rigorous and multi-stage. She first used DArTseq-based SNP analysis — an advanced molecular tool — to characterise and confirm the genetic divergence between two commercially important strains, Chitralada 4 and Super Black, before any crossbreeding was carried out. Controlled crossbreeding experiments were then designed to produce F1 hybrid offspring, with the study evaluating growth performance, morphological traits, and proximate composition across breeding, early nursery, and advanced nursery rearing phases.

By systematically assessing the heterosis effect — the degree to which hybrids outperform their parents — this research contributes toward a science-based crossbreeding strategy with direct implications for improving seed quality, farm productivity, and the long-term sustainability of Nile tilapia aquaculture across the region.

From India's coastal Konkan region to conducting advanced research at AIT, Durgesh's journey reflects passion, perseverance, and a deep commitment to innovation in aquaculture health and sustainability.

As a Master's student in the AARM Program at Asian Institute of Technology, his research focused on nutrition, stress physiology, and health management in freshwater prawns — specifically examining how dietary myo-inositol affects growth and multi-stressor tolerance in juvenile Macrobrachium rosenbergii under the combined pressure of acute salinity and ammonia stress.

By exploring how targeted nutritional supplementation can improve physiological responses and stress tolerance, Durgesh's work contributes toward healthier, more resilient, and more sustainable aquaculture practices — insights that are directly relevant to farmers dealing with unpredictable environmental conditions in the field.
