Throughout the 20th century, mainstream design predominantly adhered to the motto "Form Follows Function,"prioritizing commercial utility. However, in the 1960s, a group of Avant-garde designers in Italy began challenging these established boundaries by utilizing design as a medium for social critique and questioning (Lang, 2010).
One of the most iconic works representing that era is the Up 5 Chair (Donna Chair), designed by Gaetano Pesce in 1969. This creation transformed domestic furniture into a battleground of ideas regarding gender dynamics and power negotiations (Bartolucci, 2003). This social and gendered stance was expressed not merely through external form, but was articulated through several interconnected dimensions: from 'material innovation reflecting freedom' to 'gendered symbolism,' and extending toward 'transcending binary gender norms' before culminating in contemporary aesthetic conclusions, as detailed below.
1. Vacuum-Packed Foam Innovation and Artistic Interaction | From Material Freedom to Structural Questioning
The dismantling of conventional design began with the choice of material. The Up 5 created a sensation by utilizing molded polyurethane foam without any internal wooden or metallic structural framework (MIRRA Gallery, 2021). In the original 1969 release, the chair was vacuum-packed and compressed flat. Upon unwrapping the plastic packaging, the chair would gradually expand and inflate as if coming to life, turning the unboxing process into an interactive artistic experience for the consumer (Hart Design Selection, 2024).
The compelling underlying meaning lies in this contradiction: while the inflation innovation and frameless material seemed to embody physical "freedom," Pesce intentionally employed this newly formed shape to symbolize "female bo***ge" in the subsequent conceptual layer.
2. The Female Body, the Ball-and-Chain Ottoman, and the Questioning of Gender Bias | Paradoxical Symbolism
Expanding upon the inflated foam form of the Up 5 chair—which emulates the hips and breasts of a female figure (La Mamma)—the critical focal point lies in the spherical ottoman (Up 6), tethered to the main chair by a cord (Bartolucci, 2003). The interaction between the biomorphic form and the tether opened up key symbolic dimensions and critical debates:
- Ball and Chain: Pesce utilized the spherical footstool as a metaphor for a prisoner's iron ball and chain, representing the societal subjugation of women within patriarchal structures. As Pesce stated: “Women have always been prisoners of male prejudice and societal values. I wanted to create a chair in the shape of a female body tethered to a ball, reflecting the traditional image of a prisoner.” (MIRRA Gallery, 2021)
- Feminist Critiques: Although Pesce intended to express solidarity with women's rights, subsequent feminist scholars argued that reducing the female body to an object meant to be sat upon still reflects the Male Gaze, treating the female form as a visual and functional commodity. Simultaneously, the act of a user sitting on the chair implicitly forces them to participate in reinforcing that condition of subjugation, a point that remains a subject of critical debate and feminist protest to this day (Frearson, 2019).
However, the social commentary of Up 5 did not stop at traditional male-female binaries, but paved the way for broader challenges to gender norms in subsequent eras.
3. Deconstructing Norms | Q***r Dimensions and Marginalized Perspectives
In alignment with these expanding critical frameworks, viewing Up 5 through contemporary critical theory reveals that its challenge to power structures extends beyond feminist critiques. It contributed to the dismantling of mainstream, male-dominated design paradigms (Masculine Modernism) (Sparke, 2010), while sparking inquiries into normative gender constructs (Heteronormativity) in product design through several key critical lenses:
- Rejection of Masculine Power Forms: The chair explicitly rejects straight lines, right angles, and rigid geometry—symbols traditionally associated with masculine power in mainstream Modernism. Instead, it adopts biomorphic forms that are soft, curvaceous, and fluid to reflect corporeal and emotional states (Lang, 2010).
- Interpretation of Camp Aesthetics: The use of exaggerated proportions combined with the vibrant colors of Pop Design can be read alongside later interpretations of Camp Aesthetics, which deploy irony, emotional exaggeration, and excess to challenge conventional societal standards of taste and beauty (Dardi & Pasca, 2019).
- Embracing Imperfection and Centerless Structures: The inflatable polyurethane foam structure, which accommodates deviations from standardized geometric forms, establishes a new aesthetic that grants emotional space to marginalized identities while challenging traditional industrial notions of perfection (Bartolucci, 2003).
Conclusion | Lessons for New-Generation Designers
From vacuum-packed foam innovation yielding freeform shapes (Section 1), to the creation of symbols depicting gendered captivity (Section 2), and extending to the deconstruction of broader power and gender norms (Section 3), the Up 5 chair is far more than a piece of lounge furniture. It stands as an intellectual innovation demonstrating how design can evolve into a medium for negotiating social power.
The key takeaway for new-generation designers is that decorative arts and design do not end at aesthetics, form, or conventional functionality. Rather, design can serve as a powerful tool to amplify voices, challenge entrenched social norms, and drive intellectual discourse in a sharp, nuanced, and impactful manner.

(Hart Design Selection, 2024)
(Dardi & Pasca, 2019)
