The Boy on the Lighthouse
This was my favourite film from the Thai film festival yesterday. I actually looked something up about it, after I watched it, and regretted it because it lead me to a more formed conclusion, than I wanted, about it.
It is so nuanced and subtle, that I barely want to use words for it, as though it were a rare orchid, who's petals could be bruised by a laconic glance.
It is mysterious and mystical, as if born that way, as if the film were alive, and had no secondary intention behind it.
Some creators throw random, arcane seeming imagery at the wall, to see what sticks. Others might pour over esoteric tomes of knowledge, and be very precise about which elements to feature, and how they fit together, in a way that makes magical sense.
This doesn't feel like either. It feels channelled or as if the characters are living an incomprehensible, but very vivid and emotional, life on the screen.
I must caution viewers about the trailer. The one online might lead a potential viewer to think this film is going to be cutesy and sentimental. It is not. Not at all.
I've been figuratively ghosted by some films that attempt to be very obscure and slightly random, in an attempt to convey something mystical, but leaving me behind.
Here the film deprived me of any desire to understand. I didn't want answers to the questions that one could naturally have watching this, I just wanted to be in it. Indeed I was, in it, with logic and critical mind, handily confiscated at the door.
I don't know if everyone would have this same knee jerk, intuitive response, but I found this very powerful in its subtlety.
Incidentally, it's also scary, without trying to be. It doesn't appear to be trying to be anything other than what it is.
That's as much verbiage as I can manage without cats escaping from bags, and ravaging the upholstery.
It should be seen.
