We are delighted to invite you to Bangkok’s fourth Amartya Sen Lecture on Thursday, 6th March 2025 at 6:30pm at the InterContinental Bangkok Hotel. The Amartya Sen Lecture Series is a global initiative to celebrate the Nobel Laureate’s wide-ranging contributions to sustainable development.

Following the success of the first three Lectures in Bangkok, featuring then Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda; then OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría; and Baroness Minouche Shafik, then Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), we are delighted to invite as our speaker Khun Mechai Viravaidya, founder of the PDA, the Population and Community Development Association.

The topic is titled “Dialogue with Development Maverick Mechai Viravaidya on Spreading Consciousness in Education and Health”.

During his dinner talk, which will be in English, Khun Mechai will take you through his unique journey in areas of AIDS prevention, population control, and education. He will share his methods and perspectives, as well as his approach to partnerships, which have won the admiration of international organizations such as the World Bank and UNAIDS, to name but a few.

Following the talk, there will be a post-lecture panel to discuss the topics of the talk, consisting of Khun Mechai, Doctor Ravi Kannan, Director of the Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Assam, and Professor Amartya Sen, who will participate virtually. As always, we will leave ample time for a lively interaction with the floor.

Oxford Thai Foudation is delighted to invite you all to an exciting fireside chat on Saturday 22nd June at 18:00, at the InterContinental Hotel. The talk is titled “Thailand's Green Transition, Are We Moving?” and features two experts in the field of green transition.

M.L. Dispanadda Diskul is a former investment banker who later worked at the Crown Property Bureau before spearheading many of Mae Fah Luang Foundation and Doitung’s highly successful initiatives. These include the re-greening of vast areas in northern Thailand.

Leo Horn-Phathanothai has over 20 years of experience as a diplomat, author and environmental economist working in Asia, Africa, Europe and America. He as worked at the World Bank, UNDP, DFID, and most recently, was Director of the World Resources Institute.

The event will be held in English.

Elections are fast approaching and the Oxford Thai Foundation is delighted to bring to you once again our “Meet the Candidates” event. The speakers are three young Oxonians: Tida Yingcharoen of Thai Sang Thai Party; Earth Kwanmuang of the Democrat Party; and Itim Wacharasindhu of the Move Forward Party.

There will be a formal talk, moderated by Prof. Thitinan Pongsudhirak. Furthermore, there will be time for free discussion between guests and speakers during which we will serve wine, refreshments and snacks.

The 3rd Amartya Sen Lecture, due to be held on Monday 17th October, 2022 at 6pm at the Grand Hyatt Erawan, 18:00-22:00.

This year we are inviting Baroness Minouche Shafik, the Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) to discuss the topic: “What We Owe Each Other”.

During her talk, Baroness Shafik will address the all-important questions of: what does society owe each of us? And what do we owe in return? She will cover issues ranging from demography, climate change, and technology; and explore what is the new social contract that shapes our politics and economic systems in the 21st century.

Following the talk, Professor Elizabeth Robinson, Director of the LSE’s Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change will join Baroness Shafik on stage, while Professor Amartya Sen will participate virtually, in a post-lecture panel to cover the topics discussed. As always, we will leave ample time for a lively interaction with the floor.

Pang Pranaiya was a founding member of the OTF. She helped chart our direction from day one; she reviewed each application and interviewed candidates; every event we organised had her personal touch; she even designed our logo. Furthermore, Pang and her husband Hamish were active members of the Oxford community in Thailand and attended every gathering, without fail.

We lost Pang and her baby Arthur last September to PPD. This tragedy has left her family and friends with a painful void. Hamish, Pang’s family, together with her friends are working to honour her legacy by helping others who suffer from PPD. To this end we will soon launch the PAM Foundation.

🤍 Pranaiya and Arthur 🤍

Last year we lost our dear friend Pranaiya and her baby son Arthur to postpartum depression (PPD). The heartbreak and pain was and remains immeasurable. Pranaiya was a truly loving person and loved by everyone who knew her. She was always caring for others, always with a smile on her face.

Her husband Hamish, together with Pranaiya’s family and their friends, is setting up the Pranaiya & Arthur Magoffin Foundation in their names, to address areas in which PPD and other peripartum mental health issues need additional resources. The PAM Foundation aims to educate and raise awareness, provide care, and support research to better understand how to treat these mental health issues as well as to understand where the most vulnerable people are in society.

Pranaiya was passionate about awareness and education. She was involved in community and charity work from a young age, and later became among the first to promote social investing in Thailand. PAM Foundation wishes to build on Pranaiya’s legacy and to shine a light on this very real and important issue.

The Oxford Thai Foundation lost a dear friend and colleague, Pang Pranaiya Oulapathorn. Pang had been one of the earliest supporters of OTF, her help as a committee member was always forthcoming and incredibly valuable. She provided great input on the planning of events, as well as on our selection of scholars. She even designed our OTF logo.

Together with her husband Hamish, whom she had met during their time studying at Oxford, Pang would be the first to arrive and the last to leave any OTF event. As we mourn this tragic loss, we will keep Pang in our memories as the bright, cheerful friend with a huge heart. She will always be by our side.

Dear all,

Oxford Thai Foundation is delighted to organise for our community a webinar which is as topical as it is relevant: “The Oxford Vaccine: what is it? What can it do for you?”

The event will feature two OTF scholars, Egg Kanawat Chantaralawan, MD, who is currently one of the board of directors at the GPO, and advisor to the deputy Health Minister; and Will Tanadet Pipatpolkai, who is completing his DPhil in biochemistry at the University of Oxford. Furthermore we will be joined by Dr Ukrit Angkawinitwong, who was a former researcher doing pharmaceutical research at UCL and is now a Technology Transfer Fellow at LifeArc, which commercialises intellectual property developed at UK life sciences research institutes by licensing technology to pharmaceutical companies or creating new spin-out companies with investors.
