Must Fairness Be Harsh?
The Organization of Educational Competition in China
How do we understand fairness in education? Is fairness necessarily harsh, or can we imagine more humane ways of organizing competition?
The China–Southeast Asian Studies Center, Chiang Mai University, in collaboration with the PhD Program in Social Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University, cordially invites students, faculty members, researchers, and members of the public to attend a public lecture by Professor Biao Xiang, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (Germany) and former Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford.
Drawing on the case of China's Gaokao (National College Entrance Examination), Professor Xiang will explore how educational competition is organized, why fairness is often associated with harshness, and how we might rethink fairness through the lenses of systemic justice and individual meaning.
