Title: From Cement CO₂ to Jet Fuel: Dynamic LCA of Future CCUS Value Chains
Overview: This webinar will explore how life-cycle assessment (LCA) can better support the evaluation of emerging CCUS value chains when future deployment, system evolution, and the timing of emissions are taken into account. The discussion will be built around an industrial case in which CO2 captured from a cement plant is separated into biogenic and fossil fractions: the biogenic fraction is used as a carbon source for methanol and subsequent jet fuel production, while the fossil fraction is permanently stored. The case will be assessed through three complementary perspectives: conventional present-day LCA over the plant lifetime, prospective LCA for a future deployment context, and temporally explicit prospective LCA over the operating period. The webinar will show how these methodological choices affect the interpretation of climate performance, especially when temporary storage of non-fossil CO2 and permanent storage of fossil CO2 are represented dynamically. Finally, the climate implications of each approach will be evaluated using a climate model, highlighting how different treatments of timing, background system change, and carbon storage can lead to different conclusions about CCUS systems.
Presenter: Romain Sacchi
Brief CV: Romain Sacchi is an environmental scientist specialized in Life Cycle Assessment, prospective LCA, energy systems modelling, and scientific software development. With a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences and several years of experience as researcher at PSI’s Technology Assessment group, he develops methods and open-source tools that connect LCA with future energy and climate scenarios. His work touches on the resource and environmental assessment of energy systems, mobility, industrial technologies, and climate-change mitigation pathways, with a focus on the environmental trade-offs of defossilisation. He combines data analysis, systems modelling, programming, and a strong focus on open-acces and reproducible research workflows.
