The ICIC 352 Postcolonialism Cultural Walk

The ICIC 352 Postcolonialism Cultural Walk held on June 5 brought ICIC students and lecturers beyond the classroom and into the living historical spaces of Bangkok, where traces of colonial encounters, migration, religion, trade, and cultural hybridity continue to shape the city’s landscape.

Through visits to selected heritage sites in the Kudichin and Talad Noi communities, students engaged critically with postcolonial theories and concepts discussed in class, examining how history, power, identity, and memory remain embedded in architecture, culinary culture, communities, and everyday cultural practices.

Organized by Asst. Prof. Analiza Liezl Perez-Amurao, PhD, the activity marks the second cultural walk officially designed by her, following her earlier Bangkok Noi Walks project funded by Siriraj Hospital and Thai Health Foundation. The experiential learning activity will culminate in student-produced video essays, which will be presented in class as part of their postcolonial analysis and reflection on the cultural walk experience.

What is art — and why can it move us, disturb us, or change how we see the world? The seminar takes you on a journey through the bold, strange, and sometimes shocking ideas that have shaped our understanding of art, from Plato’s suspicion of illusion and Aristotle’s cathartic transformation, to Hume’s standard of taste and Kant’s disinterested beauty, and onward to the dramatic visions of Arthur Schopenhauer, G. W. F. Hegel, Martin Heidegger, and others. Why is a blank canvas hanging in a museum art? Why can seemingly anything today become art, remain art, or can it? Does art even matter anymore or is it just a thing of the past? The seminar challenges you to question everything you thought you knew — and to see art, and the world around you, in an entirely new way.
