The School of Computer Engineering (aka CPE) at Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) was founded in 1992 by Associate Professor Suyut Satyaprasert. At the time, it was named the School of Computer Technology under the Institute of Industrial Technology. In 2000, SUT merged the Institute of Industrial Technology and the Institute of Resources Technology to form the Institute of Engineering. Sin
ce then, the CPE has been under the Institute of Engineering. The CPE offered its first undergraduate program in 1996, the Bachelor of Engineering Program in Computer Engineering. The program has been revised seven times, in 1998, 2002, 2003, 2011, 2016, 2017, and 2022. The CPE offered its first graduate programs in 2004, the Master of Engineering Program in Computer Engineering and the Doctor of Philosophy Program in Computer Engineering. In 2015, the CPE collaborated with the School of Telecommunications Engineering to revise the graduate programs. The Master of Engineering Program in Computer Engineering was renamed the Master of Engineering Program in Telecommunication and Computer Engineering, and the Doctor of Philosophy Program in Computer Engineering was renamed the Doctor of Philosophy Program in Telecommunication and Computer Engineering. In 2020, both programs were revised again, and the name of the Doctor of Philosophy Program in Telecommunication and Computer Engineering was changed to Doctor of Philosophy Program in Telecommunication and Computer Engineering. In 2023, the CPE collaborated with the School of Electrical Engineering to develop two new part-time graduate programs, the Master of Engineering Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Doctor of Philosophy Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering. These programs are expected to start in the 2024 academic year.
สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมคอมพิวเตอร์ (School of Computer Engineering) แห่งมหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีสุรนารี เริ่มก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2535 ด้วยการบุกเบิกของผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์สุยุชน์ สัตยประกอบ [1] (ซึ่งในขณะนั้น ท่านดำรงตำแหน่งหัวหน้าภาควิชาวิศวกรรมคอมพิวเตอร์ คณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย [2]) โดยในช่วงแรกใช้ชื่อว่า สาขาวิชาเทคโนโลยีคอมพิวเตอร์ (School of Computer Technology) และอยู่ภายใต้สังกัด สำนักวิชาเทคโนโลยีอุตสาหกรรม (Institute of Industrial Technology) [3] ในเวลาต่อมา (พ.ศ. 2539) ได้มีการเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมคอมพิวเตอร์ [4] และในปี พ.ศ. 2542 มหาวิทยาลัยฯ ได้มีการควบรวมสำนักวิชาเทคโนโลยีอุตสาหกรรมและสำนักวิชาเทคโนโลยีทรัพยากร (Institute of Resources Technology) เข้าด้วยกัน แล้วจัดตั้งขึ้นเป็นสำนักวิชาใหม่ที่มีชื่อว่า สำนักวิชาวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ (Institute of Engineering) [5] นับตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมคอมพิวเตอร์จึงได้เปลี่ยนมาสังกัดสำนักวิชาวิศวกรรมศาสตร์
สาขาวิชาฯ ได้เริ่มเปิดการเรียนการสอนเป็นครั้งแรกในปีการศึกษา 2539 ในระดับปริญญาตรี ภายใต้ชื่อ หลักสูตรวิศวกรรมศาสตรบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมคอมพิวเตอร์ (Bachelor of Engineering Program in Computer Engineering) (รับนักศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรีรุ่นแรกในปี พ.ศ. 2539) ซึ่งจวบจนถึงปัจจุบันได้มีการปรับปรุงหลักสูตรนี้มาแล้ว จำนวน 7 ครั้ง ได้แก่ ในปี พ.ศ. 2541 พ.ศ. 2545 พ.ศ. 2546 พ.ศ. 2554 พ.ศ. 2559 พ.ศ. 2560 และ พ.ศ. 2565 ตามลำดับ
ในส่วนของการเรียนการสอนในระดับบัณฑิตศึกษานั้น สาขาวิชาฯ ได้เริ่มเปิดสอนทั้งระดับปริญญาโทและระดับปริญญาเอกตั้งแต่ปีการศึกษา 2547 ภายใต้ชื่อ หลักสูตรวิศวกรรมศาสตรมหาบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมคอมพิวเตอร์ (Master of Engineering Program in Computer Engineering) และ หลักสูตรวิศวกรรมศาสตรดุษฎีบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมคอมพิวเตอร์ (Doctor of Philosophy Program in Computer Engineering) ตามลำดับ และได้มีการปรับปรุงทั้งสองหลักสูตรนี้อีกครั้งในปี พ.ศ. 2555 (รับนักศึกษาระดับปริญญาโทรุ่นแรกในปี พ.ศ. 2547 และระดับปริญญาเอกรุ่นแรกในปี พ.ศ. 2555)
ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2558 สาขาวิชาฯ ได้ดำเนินการร่วมกับสาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมโทรคมนาคม เพื่อปรับปรุงหลักสูตรระดับบัณฑิตศึกษาข้างต้นอีกครั้ง จึงได้เปลี่ยนชื่อหลักสูตรระดับปริญญาโทเป็น หลักสูตรวิศวกรรมศาสตรมหาบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมโทรคมนาคมและคอมพิวเตอร์ (Master of Engineering Program in Telecommunication and Computer Engineering) และเปลี่ยนชื่อหลักสูตรระดับปริญญาเอกเป็น หลักสูตรวิศวกรรมศาสตรดุษฎีบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมโทรคมนาคมและคอมพิวเตอร์ (Doctor of Philosophy Program in Telecommunication and Computer Engineering) จากนั้นในปี พ.ศ. 2563 ได้มีการปรับปรุงทั้งสองหลักสูตรดังกล่าวอีกครั้ง ซึ่งในครั้งนี้ได้มีการเปลี่ยนชื่อภาษาไทยของหลักสูตรระดับปริญญาเอกเป็น หลักสูตรปรัชญาดุษฎีบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมโทรคมนาคมและคอมพิวเตอร์
และในปี พ.ศ. 2566 สาขาวิชาฯ ได้ดำเนินการร่วมกับสาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมไฟฟ้า เพื่อพัฒนาหลักสูตรใหม่อีกสองหลักสูตร ซึ่งเป็นหลักสูตรนอกเวลาในระดับบัณฑิตศึกษา ได้แก่ หลักสูตรวิศวกรรมศาสตรมหาบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมไฟฟ้าและคอมพิวเตอร์ (Master of Engineering Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering) และ หลักสูตรปรัชญาดุษฎีบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาวิศวกรรมไฟฟ้าและคอมพิวเตอร์ (Doctor of Philosophy Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering) และคาดว่าจะเริ่มเปิดการเรียนการสอนในปีการศึกษา 2567 เป็นต้นไป
