Walailak University researcher develops nature-inspired tissue-engineered scaffolds for bone and cartilage regeneration 🦴✨
Asst. Prof Dr. Aruna Prasoptham from the School of Pharmacy, WU, has developed a 3D tissue-engineered scaffold for the regeneration of damaged bone and cartilage. The scaffold is designed with a continuously varying internal architecture within a single construct to mimic the natural structure of the cartilage–bone interface.
A key advantage of this technology is its simple fabrication process, which does not require sophisticated or expensive equipment. The scaffold is fabricated through low-temperature phase separation of a polymer solution, producing a 3D structure with nanoscale fibrous surfaces and interconnected pores of varying sizes. The resulting scaffold also possesses suitable mechanical properties and is resistant to brittle fracture.
Different regions of the scaffold are specifically designed to provide distinct microenvironments that support the formation of bone, cartilage, and blood vessels in spatially defined regions. This feature highlights its potential for further development as a regenerative biomaterial for repairing bone, cartilage, and joint defects.
✨Key Highlights of the Research
▪ Simple fabrication with complex structural outcomes
▪ Gradient porous architecture inspired by natural tissues
▪ Spatially guided tissue regeneration
▪ Integration of silver-coated hollow bioactive glass particles enhances bone tissue formation and demonstrates potential antibacterial activity against drug-resistant bacteria.
This research represents an important step toward the development of tissue-engineered biomaterials for regenerative medicine. By recreating key aspects of the structural complexity of natural tissues, the technology provides a foundation for future medical products aimed at targeted regeneration of damaged bone, cartilage, and joints.
📌OUTPUT
▪ A prototype 3D tissue-engineered scaffold for bone and cartilage regeneration
▪ 2 research articles published in international Scopus Q1 journals
