At the recent IWA Water Safety Conference & Exhibition 2026 in Sri Lanka, the Global Sanitation Graduate School Regional Hub South and Southeast Asia (GSGS RH SSEA) at the AIT Global Water & Sanitation Center convened a high-level session to tackle this exact challenge.

🔑 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻

Beyond Conventional Training:
• In his keynote, Prof. Tanvir Ahmed (Regional Director, GSGS RH SSEA) emphasized that capacity development must evolve. We must move toward institutional strengthening and practice-oriented research to address rapid urbanization and climate change.

• Modernizing the Curriculum: Our expert panel—featuring our own Co-director Prof. Thammarat Koottatep (AIT-GWSC), and experts such as, Prof. Nadeeshani Nanayakkara (University of Peradeniya), and Mr. Alauddin Ahmed (ITN-BUET)—identified a critical need to integrate Non-Sewered Sanitation (NSS), F***l Sludge Management (FSM), and Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) into traditional engineering programs.

• Theory to Practice: The discussion underscored that "infrastructure-only" thinking is no longer enough. The next generation of WASH professionals must master experiential learning and field-based training to solve real-world sanitation hurdles.

🚀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗦𝗚𝗦
Through its expanding network of partner universities, the Global Sanitation Graduate School (GSGS) is leading the charge in providing high-quality Master’s degrees and professional training. By fostering regional collaboration, we are ensuring that academic knowledge translates directly into inclusive, equitable, and sustainable service delivery.

A heartfelt thank you to all the academic leaders and sector professionals who joined us in this call to action. Together, we are building a resilient WASH workforce capable of ensuring sanitation for all.

We officially kicked off the first day of "Hands-on Capacity Development Program on Wastewater Management and Climate Resilience under Citywide Inclusive Sanitation Project (CISP), Indonesia" at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand. With Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Gates Foundation, this five day program consisting of in-house sessions and site visits to a wastewater treatment plant facility and a sanitation service provider, aims to strengthen the capacity of executing and implementing agencies as wellas the representative of local governments involved in the ADB-funded Citywide Inclusive Sanitation Project in Indonesia by deepening their understanding of CWIS principles and their integration into project design and implementation.

𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲
The inaugural session brought together a distinguished group of leaders who set the stage for a week of collaborative learning:

• Prof. Manukid Parnichkun, Vice President for Academic and Research (VPAR), AIT
• Mr. Satoshi Ishii, Director, Strategy & Partnerships Team, Water and Urban Development Sector Office, ADB
• Prof. Sangam Shrestha, Co-director, GWSC
• Ms. Lale Widiahning, Head of the Department of Public Works and Spatial Planning, Mataram City Government

𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
As highlighted during the opening sessions, building facilities is only half the battle. To ensure these systems last and truly serve their communities, we must prioritize developing the capacity of the workforce and establishing the mechanisms to sustain them long-term.

We are proud to host this program in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Gates Foundation, working together to create climate-resilient sanitation futures for Indonesia.

Stay tuned as we dive deeper into technical sessions and hands-on workshops over the next four days!

Tomorrow, April 3rd at the Global South WASH Financing Conference 2026 shifts the conversation from simply building infrastructure to the critical systems that sustain it, join us at the 𝘽𝙚𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙙 𝙄𝙣𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚: 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙂𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙄𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙎𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙨𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣.

While policies for Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) are gaining momentum, the reality is that inclusion often stalls during implementation. The reason is structural: our financing systems, from public budgets to procurement frameworks, are frequently designed for rapid infrastructure spending rather than the long-term, equitable service delivery that communities need.

With a international and high level participation of organisation and speakers this session to address these distortions. We are moving beyond the question of "how much" and focusing on "how" finance can be redesigned to ensure equity is a built-in outcome, not an afterthought.

𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴:
• Mr. Ashok Kumar Byanju Shrestha (Immediate Past President of UCLG ASPAC & MuAN)
• Prof. Thammarat Koottatep (AIT-GWSC)
• Ms. Isha Basyal (AIT-GWSC)
• Ms. sudha shrestha (UN-Habitat Nepal)
• Ms. Dyah Putri Wulandari (Institut Teknologi Bandung Indonesia)
• Ms. Mahnaz Iftikhar (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cities Improvement Project - KPCIP Pakistan)
• Ms. Salomat Yuldasheva Sharofitdinovna (Uzsuvtaminot, Uzbekistan)

Join us as we explore pathways to unlock blended financing and align public finance with the delivery of inclusive, climate-resilient sanitation.

GWSC Celebrates this , acknowledging what we eat, what we waste, and how to move towards a more circular future. Moving to circularity requires everyone: governments must strengthen policies and public–private partnerships; businesses must set food waste reduction targets and innovate; consumers must plan, store and cook mindfully to cut waste. A zero‑waste future is possible when we all act together.

At the GWSC office, our commitment to a starts with the basics: washing our plastics, separating our waste, and ensuring nothing that can be recovered is lost.

We take this same "rinse and recycle" mindset to our regional projects:
• 📍 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙮: SEA-MaP Knowledge Exchange Programme to tackle marine plastic across ASEAN.
• 📊 𝙎𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚: Mathematical Waste Models that help cities accurately track and improve their recycling rates through scientific forecasting.

Today, we recognize the International Day of Zero Waste not just as a date on the calendar, but as a reflection of how we work—from the office sink to regional policy—every single day. ♻️🌍
