𝗗𝗿. 𝗦𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗻, Assistant Professor of Data Science and AI at the Faculty of Advanced Science and Technology (FAST), AIT, delivered an invited talk at the Forum on Economic Development of the Technology Service Industry, held as part of the 2026 Global Digital Economy Conference in Beijing.

His presentation, titled "𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲", made a compelling case that while AI will be a foundational component of future digital economies, technological capability alone is not enough. Countries, particularly developing economies, must simultaneously build reliable infrastructure, human expertise, institutional capacity, responsible governance, and sustainable computing ecosystems.

Dr. Sein Minn's talk advocated for a human-centered, inclusive, and sustainable AI ecosystem anchored in 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗔𝗜, 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, and 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆, with a vision of a Digital Silk Road that connects not only people and physical infrastructure, but also data, AI, knowledge, and intelligent services, enabling development that is resilient, sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous.

The Asian Summer School in Bangkok 2026 at FAST, AIT was enriched by a wonderful guest lecture on "𝗦𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴" by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗔𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗵𝗶, Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Social Sciences, Srinakharinwirot University (SWU).

Dr. Asamaporn specializes in geoinformatics, social sensing, and the use of geospatial big data and social media analytics for urban and environmental applications. Her session introduced participants to how location-based social media data and crowdsourced information can be harnessed to understand human activities, urban dynamics, and disaster response, a rapidly growing frontier in geoinformatics.

What made the visit even more special is that Dr. Asamaporn is a proud alumna of the Remote Sensing and GIS (RSGIS) program at AIT, making her return to campus to inspire the next generation of geospatial professionals all the more meaningful. 🌏

FAST, AIT was honored to welcome 𝗛.𝗘. 𝗠𝗿. 𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗹, Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Thailand (Embassy of India, and Member of the AIT Board of Trustees, to the AI and Simulation Laboratory (AISL) on 26 August 2026.

The session was led by Dr. Sanit Arunplod, who introduced the Ambassador to the lab's ongoing research in artificial intelligence, simulation, and advanced technologies. A highlight of the visit was a live demonstration of SanitBox Cluster, a drone data processing platform designed to support UAV-based geospatial data processing, cloud computing, and free academic applications.

The visit was part of a broader campus tour that included meetings with Indian faculty, staff, and students, and discussions on expanding cooperation in education, research, innovation, and regional capacity building between AIT and India.

A truly memorable visit that reflects the strong and enduring partnership between AIT and India. 🌏

Congratulations to 𝗗𝗿. 𝗞𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗨𝗽𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗮𝗲𝘄 on the successful completion of her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (RSGIS).

Her doctoral research, titled "𝗣𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗹-𝟭 𝗦𝗔𝗥 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀𝗰𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮: 𝗔 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗩𝗠, 𝗥𝗙, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗦𝗧𝗠 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀", tackled one of the most pressing challenges in tropical ecosystem monitoring, classifying mangrove forest stages including disturbance, healthy, and recovery conditions, under the difficult conditions of cloud cover and tidal variability that often limit optical satellite data.

By combining SAR data from Sentinel-1 with vegetation indices from Sentinel-2, and applying machine learning models including Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and deep learning through Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), her research demonstrated that machine learning approaches offer greater reliability and practical value for operational mangrove monitoring. The findings provide a meaningful framework for supporting ecosystem conservation and rapid rehabilitation efforts in Thailand and beyond.

We are delighted to share that Dr. Sarawut Ninsawat, Dean of the Faculty of Advanced Science and Technology (FAST), AIT, has been promoted to the rank of Full Professor, following the approval of the Board of Trustees at its meeting held on 20 August 2026.

Prof. Sarawut joined AIT as Assistant Professor in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (RSGIS) in July 2015 and was promoted to Associate Professor in November 2021. He holds a Doctor of Creative Cities in Urban Information from Osaka City University, Japan, earned with the prestigious Monbukagakusho Scholarship awarded by the Government of Japan, a Master of Science in Space Technology Applications and Research from AIT, and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Silpakorn University, Thailand.

His research spans machine learning, remote sensing, and GIS applications in agriculture and natural resource management, web-mapping frameworks, Open Geospatial Consortium web services, and location-based applications for logistics.
Beyond AIT, Prof. Sarawut serves on national committees on geospatial data and disaster management, as a Board Member of the Geographic Association of Thailand, and as a Charter Member and Thailand Local Chapter representative of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation.

As part of the Asian Summer School in Bangkok 2026, participants had the opportunity to explore the world of UAV technology through a hands-on session at FAST, AIT.

The session, led by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗱, introduced participants to UAV applications in mapping, agriculture monitoring, surveying, and geospatial data analysis. A highlight of the session was SanitBox, a customized UAV data-processing cluster developed by Dr. Sanit for academic and research use. SanitBox provides a cloud-based platform for processing UAV imagery using open-source software, enabling students and researchers to work with aerial datasets without the need for high-performance personal computers.

Through the session, participants explored the complete UAV workflow from data acquisition to cloud-based processing and geospatial analysis, gaining practical insight into how open-source technology and shared computing infrastructure can make geospatial research more accessible. 🌏

The Faculty of Advanced Science and Technology (FAST) at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) was pleased to welcome 𝗠𝘀. 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮 𝗞𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗶, Senior Program Officer at the Gates Foundation, for a strategic visit focused on advancing open-source Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) across the Asia-Pacific region.

The discussions explored the strategic vision for the DPI project, regional and international partnerships, university collaboration, private-sector engagement, and opportunities for cutting-edge research. Particular emphasis was placed on developing interoperable, user-centric and inclusive digital ecosystems that empower individuals with greater control over their digital credentials and data, while maintaining strong principles of privacy, security and consent.

FAST researchers also presented ongoing work in AI-assisted MOSIP deployment, AI Sentinel, AI agents, liveness detection, verifiable credentials, and AI-powered DPI use cases. The discussions highlighted opportunities to apply these technologies to real-world challenges and support inclusive digital transformation across Southeast and South Asia.

The visit also explored the potential for AIT to strengthen its role as a regional research and partnership hub for AI and DPI, connecting universities, governments, development organizations and the private sector.

FAST at AIT extends its appreciation to the Gates Foundation for the valuable strategic guidance, insightful discussions and shared vision for advancing open-source and inclusive Digital Public Infrastructure.

The Faculty of Advanced Science and Technology, AIT, welcomed a delegation from Tongji University () and Henan University (), Shanghai, to the Asian Institute of Technology for a day of academic exchange and collaboration.

The visit opened with a collaboration meeting, where the delegation presented their research directions, including connected and autonomous vehicles, cooperative control of transportation systems, communication theory and security, urban traffic management through graph neural networks, and AI driven energy technologies for microgrid systems. Representatives from Henan University's School of Artificial Intelligence also outlined their research focus, spanning information fusion, intelligent signal processing, and collaborative control, with applications in smart cities, UAV swarms, smart ports, and connected vehicle systems.

The visit concluded with a tour of the AI and Simulation Lab, offering the delegation a closer look at ongoing research at FAST. The discussions laid the groundwork for future collaboration, including potential student and faculty exchange, joint research initiatives, and co-authored publications.
