Galileo Maritime Academy provides a wide

range of safety, security and first aid courses to meet the needs of superyachts and cruise line, merchant line and oil/gas rig owners, managers and operators. Galileo also provides entry-level and advanced skills and service training for the superyacht crew. Superyacht crew courses include exterior deck crew, interior steward and stewardess, combined skills for deckhand/steward or stewardess, and culinary courses for yacht chef and experienced chefs who transition from a land career to an onboard career. In addition to established courses, Galileo works with client companies to develop training programs that meet their own specific training needs and policies, providing consultancy services and also undertaking on-board security and safety audits with reports and recommendations.

It is your STCW. That is the first thing most yacht jobs look for, before anything else.

It has nothing to do with who you know, where you are from or how old you are. It is one course, five days, covering the basics that keep you safe at sea: survival, fire, first aid, personal safety and security awareness.

Once you have it, you can start applying.

It is the simplest first step into a career at sea, and the easiest one to keep putting off.

Choosing your first deckhand course can feel like a bigger decision than it really is.

You are not choosing between three price tags. You are choosing how ready you want to be on the day you start your job.

That is what these three packages are about.

Essentials is the quick, clean route onto deck. STCW and your IYT Deck Crew certificate, the basics that let you start applying for smaller yachts.

Standard is for when you want your CV to say a little more. AEC1 and VHF, the kind of practical skills a captain notices when two green CVs land on the same desk.

Complete is for getting it all done in one go. Jet ski, security duties and CV coaching on top, so nothing is left half finished before you apply.

It is not only about how much you earn at sea. It is about how much you actually get to keep.

When you live on board, a lot of your everyday costs simply disappear. On most yachts your accommodation and meals are covered while you are working, so rent and food bills stop taking their usual bite out of your income. That alone can change how much of your salary you save.

There are other factors that work in your favour too. On charter yachts, tips can add up over a busy season, though they are never guaranteed. Depending on your nationality and tax status, you may qualify for favourable tax treatment, such as the UK's Seafarers' Earnings Deduction if you meet the conditions. Many yachts also run rotational contracts, so you keep earning while you are off the boat and back home to rest or travel.

None of this is automatic, and how much you earn always depends on your role, your qualifications and your experience.
