🤖 What Competencies Do Healthcare Professionals Need in the Age of AI?
Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of modern healthcare. It can support data analysis, information interpretation, decision-making, work organisation, and education. However, as the capabilities of AI continue to develop, an important question arises:
Is knowing how to use AI tools enough to ensure their safe and responsible use in patient care?
Within the Erasmus+ Future of Healthcare (FoH) project, we believe the answer is no.
Future competencies in healthcare cannot be limited to technical knowledge or the ability to use specific applications. Technologies are evolving rapidly, while responsibility for the quality and safety of care remains with healthcare professionals.
Therefore, healthcare professionals should not only know how to use AI, but also be able to assess when its outputs can be trusted, when they should be questioned, and when independent professional judgement is essential.
🔎 Critical Thinking
AI-generated outputs should not automatically be considered accurate or reliable. Healthcare professionals need the ability to assess the quality of information, recognise the limitations of technology, verify recommendations, and interpret them in the context of the actual clinical situation and the individual needs of the patient.
⚖️ Professional Responsibility
AI can support decision-making, but it cannot assume the professional’s responsibility. Healthcare professionals must understand the boundaries of technology use and maintain oversight of the decision-making process — particularly when decisions may affect a patient’s health, safety, and well-being.
🗣️ Communication and the Patient–Professional Relationship
Technological development does not reduce the importance of interpersonal competencies — on the contrary, it may make them even more essential. Patients should understand how technology supports their care, while healthcare professionals should be able to explain AI-supported information clearly, understandably, and in a way that is adapted to the individual patient’s needs.
🛡️ Ethical Competencies
The use of AI raises important questions concerning privacy, data protection, transparency, potential algorithmic bias, equitable access to technology, and the boundaries of responsibility between humans and AI systems. Ethical reflection should therefore be an integral part of healthcare professionals’ digital competencies.
👩⚕️ People Remain at the Centre of Care
Technology can analyse vast amounts of data and support healthcare professionals in their work. However, it cannot replace empathy, clinical experience, professional responsibility, communication, or the ability to understand each patient’s individual situation.
This is why the Future of Healthcare (FoH) project focuses not only on the use of emerging technologies, but above all on developing a comprehensive set of competencies that healthcare professionals need in an environment where AI is becoming increasingly integrated into healthcare practice.
Our goal is to prepare professionals who can use artificial intelligence consciously, critically, ethically, and responsibly, while preserving what lies at the heart of high-quality healthcare — professional judgement, patient safety, and human-to-human relationships.
AI may change the way we work.
Human competencies will determine how safely and responsibly we use its potential.
👉 In your opinion, which competency will be the most important for healthcare professionals in the age of AI?
