FINAL REVIEW
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Albayrak Passage, an ‘L’ shaped two-story commercial building located in Havralar District in the historical area of Kemeraltı in Izmir, represents a strategic architectural artifact connecting, in the form of an ‘urban corridor’, the vibrant commercial axis of Havra Street with the Jewish Heritage quarter and the Synagogue region.
Finalized with the invaluable support of TARKEM, the brief of the Studio course encouraged students to propose alternative design strategies for Albayrak Passages’ renovation task, by promoting the integration of spaces for Gastronomy, Trade and Artisanal Production, and Professional Education, and by formulating a set of architectural interventions aimed at increasing the visitability of the building while creating new experiential opportunities for the visitors.
The target of the Studio was the definition of a comprehensive regeneration model aimed at re-establishing into Albayrak Passage its characteristic purpose while attributing to the building a new social, cultural and commercial meaning for the local community and for tourists.
A wide range of interventional design proposals was presented and discussed during the final project review. Discourses on good practices in Adaptive Reuse of the existing building stock were also promoted toward the identification of appropriate design actions compatible with the twofold goal of the project, that is protecting the genius loci of the place while experimenting contemporary adaptation applications.
