Fire Wall Against the Flames

IUE faculty members Prof. Dr. Celalettin Kozanoğlu and Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar have been granted a patent for the “fire wall” project they developed to extinguish forest fires quickly and prevent them from spreading over large areas. Designed for use especially around transformers, thermal power plants, hospitals, public buildings or residential areas located near forests, the fire wall will be capable of spraying water up to 150 meters. Thanks to its prefabricated structure, the fire walls can be easily transported and quickly assembled, and will be able to remain active 24 hours a day.

Developed by Prof. Dr. Celalettin Kozanoğlu, faculty member at the Department of Civil Engineering at Izmir University of Economics, and Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, faculty member at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, the project will provide major support in the fight against fires. The fire walls, registered and granted a patent by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, will be equipped with pumps capable of rapidly spraying water.

‘Scientific’ pride✨

Asst. Prof. Dr. Umut Can Adısönmez from the Department of Political Science and International Relations at IUE, has been awarded the “2026 Young Scientist Encouragement Award” by the International Relations Council (UIK), one of the most prestigious honors in the field. Asst. Prof. Dr. Adısönmez, whose research focuses on topics such as the relationship between identity and security in international relations, ontological security, identity in foreign policy, and the role of social memory, was recognized for his promising work that contributes not only to policy studies but also to theoretical scholarship. Bringing great pride to Izmir University of Economics with this achievement, Asst. Prof. Dr. Adısönmez said, “It is a great source of happiness for me that my work has been recognized and appreciated by the academic community, and that I have been able to bring such a prestigious award to my university.”

Izmir University of Economics Becomes Turkish Champion in Fencing🏆

IUE Men’s Fencing Team won first place at the UNILIG Turkish Championship held in Ankara this year and brought home the trophy. Competing against ambitious teams from across Türkiye, the IUE students made it to the top and experienced the pride and joy of bringing the cup to Izmir.

The fencing team, consisting of Mert Ahmet Koç, a Logistics Management student studying at Izmir University of Economics on a national athlete scholarship, and Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation students Özgür Ege Şenyurdusev and Yiğit Çetinkaya, underwent an intensive preparation process for the championship hosted by Gazi University. Continuing their training regularly in the gym during their free time outside classes, the students built up their stamina and strength, and their hard work paid off with the championship trophy. IUE, which came second in Türkiye with its fencing team in 2023, achieved the long-awaited championship this year and rose to the top.

Strong Contribution to Defense Technologies🚀

Students from the Faculty of Engineering at IUE have developed a special bomb disposal robot named “Eclipse,” which can conduct surface scans thanks to its robotic arm, reconnaissance drone, camera and sensors. Fully designed at IUE in terms of its drive, power and control systems, Eclipse features image processing capabilities and can operate continuously for 3 hours, scanning an area of 10 kilometers around it. The robot ranked among the top 10 finalists out of nearly 1,300 projects in the EFES 2026 Defense Science and Technologies Project Competition. Capable of detecting mines or explosives on all types of surfaces even under the most challenging weather conditions and reporting their coordinates, the approximately 50-kilogram robot’s entire software infrastructure was also developed by young engineers at IUE.

Berra Okudurlar, a graduate of the Department of English Translation and Interpreting at IUE, has been accepted to the University of Oxford for her master’s degree - a university that millions of young people around the world dream of attending. Okudurlar, who became one of only 12 students admitted to study in the field of Comparative Literature and Critical Translation, achieved remarkable success. Expressing her great happiness at seeing years of hard work pay off, Okudurlar said, “Oxford has always been a university I wanted to be part of. It was not easy, but I succeeded. I want this achievement to inspire all students and give them hope.”

Izmir University of Economics Law Students Rank Second in Türkiye🥈

IUE Faculty of Law students Berin Ceylin Çorak, Deren Yalçın and Azra Özge Özgün came second in the “Comparena Competition Law Contest” organized by the Lawment Association. Held in the format of a practical hearing simulation, the competition required young lawyers to prepare written petitions for a process related to the Competition Board. Their oral defenses also impressed the jury.

Standing out with their knowledge, strong public speaking skills and different perspectives, the IUE team was delighted to win an award in the competition, which featured 17 teams from various universities across Türkiye.
