The Design Story of a Lifetime✨

The life of 90-year-old interior architect Bediz Koz, one of the pioneers of modern furniture production in Türkiye, has been turned into a book. Authored by academics from Izmir and shedding light on the recent past, the work was published by IUE Press and met with readers. Thoroughly discussing Bediz Koz’s identity as a designer, the book contains oral history interviews, delightful anecdotes, and furniture and interior architecture projects, making it the first comprehensive study to bring the master’s unforgettable memories and inspiring experiences to the present day.

A New Roadmap for Disaster Management✨

The increase in disasters such as fires, floods, tornadoes, avalanches, and earthquakes, driven in part by global climate change, has mobilized academics at IUE. Aiming to strengthen field coordination and reduce response times during disasters, four academics have developed a new communication model with the support of TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye). The project, completed in approximately two years, features notable proposals such as establishing backup communication systems for when GSM networks fail, increasing the technological competence of field personnel, and creating joint VR/AR-based drill environments so institutions can experience disaster scenarios in advance.

Victory Inspired by Nature’s Colors✨

The winner of the Creative Business Cup Turkey, organized to boost Turkey’s strength in creative industries and support innovative business ideas, has been announced. ‘Chroma Naturals’, founded by IUE Department of Biomedical Engineering Research Assistant Duygu Geçkin to produce natural pigments for the cosmetics industry by transforming fruit and vegetable waste into value-added products, won first place in the competition. Reaching the top with her project combining sustainability, science, and entrepreneurship, Geçkin earned the right to represent Turkey at the world finals, which will take place on August 26–27 in Denmark featuring entrepreneurs from over 50 countries.

‘Port Ekonomi’ Team Finishes Second in Türkiye🥈

The ‘Port Ekonomi’ team, formed by students from the Department of Logistics Management at IUE Faculty of Business, achieved second place in the UNI-LODER Supply Chain Game Competition, which featured ambitious teams from across Türkiye. Organized for the first time this year through the collaboration of the Logistics Association (LODER) and Slimstock Türkiye, the young logistics professionals earned the jury’s praise with strategic decisions made in critical areas such as inventory management, demand planning, lead time management, and cost optimization. Congratulating the students, Head of the IUE Department of Logistics Management, Prof. Dr. Özgür Özpeynirci, said, “We make a difference with our educational methods centered on industry needs, our strong ties with the business world, and our experiential learning model.”

The ‘Port Ekonomi’ team, consisting of Izmir University of Economics Logistics Management students Berk Alver, Defne Hıçkıran, Ali Efe Zıh, and İbrahim Tunay, had the opportunity to experience supply chain processes through simulations based on real-world business scenarios in the online competition.

A New Model in Higher Education: EKOMOD ✨

IUE has developed a web-based academic management platform called ‘EKOMOD’, introducing a new digital model that sets an example for higher education in Türkiye. Developed by IUE academic, EKOMOD has been registered, commercialized, and licensed to Marsala Yazılım A.Ş. By analyzing student data on a course and exam basis, presenting performance results, and automatically generating assessment and evaluation reports, EKOMOD will enable universities to manage their quality and accreditation processes in a more effective, systematic, and traceable manner. Now transformed into a commercial product, EKOMOD will be made available to universities both nationally and internationally.

Young Architects Win Award for Their Project🏆

Aylin Akay, a graduate of the Department of Architecture at IUE, received an award at the 22nd Ytong Architectural Idea Competition with the project ‘Horror Vacui’, which she developed together with fellow architects Işıl Ceren Tur and Başak Ünver. The team’s project focused on creating a space where people can briefly rest amidst the density of urban life and disconnect from the surrounding digital and physical clutter. Their proposal earned one of the competition’s three equal awards. As part of the prize, the young architects also qualified to join an architectural study trip to Cairo, Egypt, in October together with the competition jury.

The Era of ‘Digital Badges’🚀

Aiming to equip its students with additional competencies in a wide range of fields-from artificial intelligence and software to health and sustainability-alongside their chosen areas of study, IUE has introduced 1,100 students to “digital badges,” which serve as electronic certificates. Emphasising that university education should not be limited to earning a diploma, Dr. Donald Staub, Director of the IUE Micro-Credentials Office, said: “Through digital badges, we provide our students with verifiable skills, prepare them for the professions of the future and offer them new employment opportunities.”

IUE has taken another major step in digital transformation by becoming the first and only university in Türkiye to join the Digital Credentials Commons (DCC), a network that includes some of the world’s leading universities. As a member of the DCC, which includes such prestigious higher education institutions as MIT, Harvard, the University of Toronto and TU Delft, İzmir University of Economics has contributed to efforts aimed at developing global standards for the reliability, portability and international recognition of digital credentials.

The Only Turkish Student Admitted in the Last Five Years✨

Kerem Kavruk, a graduate of the Department of Economics at the Faculty of Business, IUE, has been admitted to the Master’s Programme in Economics of Globalisation and European Integration (EGEI), which is funded by the European Union and regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious graduate programmes.

Kavruk ranked 13th among only 30 students admitted worldwide and became the only Turkish student selected for the programme in the last five years. Stating that he had long aimed to study at EGEI, Kavruk said, “I am very happy and proud to have been selected for such an important programme, which closely aligns with my academic work and career goals.”
