Summary

Two men—Estragon (Gogo) and Vladimir (Didi)—wait in an unknown and unidentifiable place for an unknown and unidentifiable person named “Godot”. Why do they wait? Why don’t they go? They don’t know. Another couple—Pozzo and Lucky—answer that question. They come and go and are none the better for it. Waiting is the main action of the play, and yet, they must fill the time while waiting and perform a variety of activities to make the time pass. Beckett’s characters enact the contemporary disease of boredom, and all the different ways we attempt to stave it off. Are Didi and Gogo just stupid fools for waiting or do they preserve some dignity by their commitment to each other and to Godot?

About the Phoenix Theatre

The Phoenix Theatre started in 1999 with performances of Tina Howe’s Birth and Afterbirth and David Ives’ Universal Language, and for seven years produced one or two plays a year. Most of the actors in Waiting for Godot have featured in previous Phoenix Theatre productions including: Metamorphosis (2000), Hysteria (2002), Murder, Mayhem and…Mating: Five Existential Comedies (2004).

Catherine Diamond has been directing shows for the Kinnari Ecological Theatre project in Southeast Asia since 2010, but during the pandemic resurrected The Phoenix Theatre to present Waiting for Godot. A play about waiting without ever knowing exactly what one is waiting for, or when the waiting will end seemed very appropriate for this time when we are all waiting, waiting even though we know things will never be the same, and we remain “in the dark”.

About the play

Waiting for Godot (1953), Samuel Beckett’s play, supposedly depicts the ruins of European civilization after World War II when all institutional structures were devastated, leaving the surviving human beings as nothing but the “unaccommodated man, no more than a poor, bare, forked animal” described in Shakespeare’s King Lear. Now a modern classic performed around the world, it made its premiere in Taiwan in 1965.

Introduction

Do not look for a story. Do not look for meaning.
Just open yourself to these characters, their relationships, and their predicament.
They are waiting for an unknown person, Godot. They do not know why they wait, or for what.
The only action in the play is inaction: Waiting becomes a Way of Life—not unlike our own, no?
Are we all not waiting for something?
Perhaps you will find it funny, or boring, or both.
Allow yourself to be curious—What is going on here?
Why have people been fascinated and irritated by Waiting for Godot for over half a century?
It requires you to make your own connection, and once you do, it will be with you forever.
