On May 27, the Department of Theatre Arts organized the lecture and workshop “Japan and Kowaka-mai in Traditional Culture,” which received an enthusiastic response from students and participants. Before the workshop began, Chikako Kowaka, Kazuhisa Kowaka, Wakayagi Matuba, Kazumi Nakao, and Yukihiko Yoshida paid a brief visit to the Office of International Affairs.

As one of Japan’s traditional performing arts, Kowaka-mai combines storytelling, dance, music, and bodily rhythm, offering a fresh and unique experience for many faculty members and students. The event not only provided participants with a rare opportunity to engage closely with traditional Japanese performing arts but also demonstrated that international exchange can go beyond slogans and formalities, becoming a lively, embodied cultural interaction.

The Office of International Affairs also hopes that through this lecture and workshop, TNUA students and faculty can further experience the presence of diverse cultures on campus, while expanding possibilities for cross-cultural understanding and the exchange of performing arts.

On May 28, Principal Loh Hong Seng of Tsun Jin High School led 30 members of the school’s dance troupe (2 teachers and 28 students) on a visit to Taipei National University of the Arts. TNUA was the final university they visited before leaving Taiwan, making it a memorable end to their trip.

The group visited the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts and the Theatre and Dance Building, including the School of Dance’s rehearsal spaces. Shareen Yang, a TNUA School of Filmmaking student and alumna of Tsun Jin High School, also guided the students around campus. Staff from the Admissions Division later introduced TNUA’s admissions and application information.

During the visit to the dance rehearsal spaces, the students kept saying, “Wow, Principal!” showing their excitement and admiration for the facilities. On the same day, they also attended the opening performance of the Department of Dance’s summer production, Da Ming. After the performance, the teachers shared that the students were very impressed by the TNUA students’ technical skills and stage presence.

Watching the performance up close from the front row left a strong impression on the students. We look forward to seeing them again at TNUA.
