IMICS

IMICS International Master’s Program in International Communication Studies (IMICS) established in 2006.

The IMICS program focuses on international, cross-cultural communication studies in response to the rapid pace of globalization, placing additional emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region. Through the university’s three well-established communication departments (Journalism, Radio and Television, and Advertising), students are encouraged to explore the full context of international trends through adva

nced academic research. In addition to delving into the diverse curriculum offered by IMICS, Master’s students are encouraged to explore elective courses from other departments and will also be presented with opportunities to interact with other renowned international universities and global media corporations. Aiming to cultivate future leaders and professionals in the field of communications and international media, IMICS is highly selective in its admissions process. Each academic year, IMICS accepts a balanced number of qualified local and international students to join the upcoming class, in order to encourage a cross-cultural interchange of ideas in the classroom. Therefore, the diverse group of Master’s students in IMICS benefits from peers by combining their different academic backgrounds, collaborating on academic research projects, and pursuing various opportunities for international academic exchange.

Making a mark, marking the margins

How does the media we consume every day shape our fundamental understanding of people and reality? We are honored to welcome Dr. Alwin Aguirre from the University of the Philippines Diliman for a compelling talk on the intersection of meaning, affect, and materiality in media engagement.

Using specific examples from the Philippines, Dr. Aguirre will challenge us to question whether media representation can ever be truly fair for minorities and the marginalized. This is a must-attend session for anyone interested in social science, communication ethics, and global discourse.

Last week, NCCU’s Department of Advertising was honored to host a visiting delegation from Chulalongkorn University’s International School of Communication Management (ISCM).

The exchange focused on the strategic power of "Cultural Soft Power". From mixed-group workshops analyzing brands to deep dives into local consumer behavior, students gained invaluable hands-on experience in cross-cultural marketing.

A huge thank you to Dr. Rémy Jarry and the Chulalongkorn team for a day of brilliant insights and meaningful connections!

We had the privilege of hosting Dr. Renita Coleman from the University of Texas at Austin, who led our graduate students through a thesis and research development workshop. The workshop went through not only the research process, from theory to operationalization, but also provided a space for students to engage with each other and even have one-on-one chats with Dr. Coleman.

This kind of workshop helps sharpen students’ research capabilities and provides opportunities to learn from internationally well-known scholars in our field. Students can look forward to a similar opportunity very soon.

🍜 On Nov. 19th, Prof. Wu-Ken Shih joined the EMI class at NCCU’s College of Communication to talk about how food reflects Taiwan’s history and everyday life. He used familiar foods to show how culture changes over time and how traditions are reinterpreted today. In the Q&A, students also discussed authenticity, cultural exchange, and fusion.
