The International Chinese Language Program (ICLP), the world’s premier institution for the instruction of both modern and classical Chinese, was established in 1962 as the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies (IUP). Since then, it has offered intensive language training to over 3,000 elite students from more than 20 countries. ICLP provides a year-long language program in a Mandar

in-speaking environment which upholds much of its traditional Chinese heritage and culture within the framework of a modern democratic society. ICLP enables students to achieve broad and independent competence in spoken Chinese and to develop reading skills needed for academic research or other professional use.

🔹 穩住(HOLD ON)

While staying in Taiwan, you may find it takes some time to adjust to the local environment and weather. Earthquakes are relatively common here, so it’s important to be familiar with basic safety steps and know how to protect yourself and others in case one occurs.

In the event of a strong earthquake:

🔹 DROP down onto your hands and knees before the shaking knocks you over. This position helps prevent falls while allowing you to move if needed.

🔹 COVER your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk. If no shelter is available, move near an interior wall or next to low furniture that is unlikely to fall, and protect your head and neck with your arms.

🔹 HOLD ON to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with the shelter if it shifts.

We are sincerely grateful for the warm invitation and thoughtful hospitality from the Chinese Language Program in Cornell University’s Department of Asian Studies. ICLP was honored to visit Ithaca this October for an in-person exchange. The delegation was led by our Director Prof. Ya-feng Wu and includes the Deputy Division Director of Curriculum and Instructions I-Chuan Wang Laoshi and Division Director of International Affairs and Admissions Hueijun Li Laoshi.

During our visit, we had the pleasure of meeting with Prof. Robin McNeal, Chair of the Department of Asian Studies; Mr. Joshua Young, Deparment Administrative Manager; and Prof. Rui Liu, Chinese Language Program Coordinator, to discuss future collaboration. We also observed classes, interacted with students at an admissions information session, and engaged in meaningful conversations with staff and faculty members from both the Chinese Language Program and the East Asia Program.

It was lovely to reconnect with Prof. Jyun-hong Lu, who taught at ICLP for many years, along with several ICLP and CGY alumni. Meeting again on Cornell’s beautiful campus made the reunion especially memorable.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the NTU-OIA Huayu BEST Program Office for their support, and especially to Ms. Victoria/Kai-Wei Cheng, the Program’s U.S. representative, who accompanied us throughout the visit and provided invaluable assistance every step of the way.

Lokah!
