摘要:Historians in recent years have recognized that the Enlightenment should not be labelled as or considered solely the "Age of Reason," since it was also a time that emphasized sensibility. As an age of sensibility, it stressed the role and value of sympathetic feelings and sentiments in the moral, aesthetic, social, political, and even spiritual life, as articulated in philosophy and literature in particular. This lecture explores the music of "Enlightenment sensibility"—not music as performance or compositions but music as ideas and metaphors, as used by Enlightenment writers and thinkers to conceptualize and interpret sensibility from different perspectives.

講題:What Music Makes Us Think and Imagine: Exploring the Impact of Music on Consciousness

摘要:The influence of music on conscious thought remains a neglected area in music psychology. Although some mental phenomena, such as autobiographical memories and involuntary musical imagery or "earworms", have garnered research attention, there is limited understanding of other forms of internally-oriented cognition, such as mind-wandering and visual imagery. Nevertheless, a common way people incorporate music into their daily lives involves engaging in fantasies, daydreams, escapism, or introspection—underscoring the importance of internal mental processes in musical experiences. In this talk, I will review recent empirical research in music psychology that explores mind-wandering and visual imagery. I will demonstrate how music serves as a trigger that influences the occurrence and phenomenology of these mental states, discuss the connection between music-evoked thoughts and emotions, and highlight the practical implications of this emerging research area such as the impact on creative cognition and well-being.
