Realistic Modeling of Geographic Accessibility to Healthcare in Low- and Middle-income Countries

We were honored to host Professor Nicolas Ray, Director of the Institute of Global Health, University of Genva as a distinguished guest lecturer in Professor Jean’s Fundamentals of Health Economics and Financing course.

Professor Nicolas delivered an insightful lecture titled “Realistic modeling of Geographic Accessibility to Healthcare in Low- and Middle-income Countries.” He demonstrated how geographic barriers – often overlooked in traditional economic models – are fundamental to determining health outcomes and resource allocation. By integrating complex geospatial datasets like landcover, elevation, and population density, his work provides a sophisticated lens through which we can visualize the physical challenges populations face when trying to reach life-saving care.

His presentation offered valuable perspectives on this vital topic, and it was truly a pleasure to have him share his expertise with us.

🎉We held our new semester gathering today, which included a productive meeting with the Director. The session provided important updates about the program, outlined timelines for upcoming activities, and created space to address students’ questions and concerns.

Following the meeting, we enjoyed a mini feast together in celebration of the Lantern Festival, adding a warm and festive touch to the start of the semester. It was a meaningful way to combine clarity, community, and culture as we begin this new chapter📖

☺️It was a pleasure to have one of our PhD students, Howard Lee, to share his experience in Professor Jean’s Global Partnerships and Health Security course. Howard is also an attending physician in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Taipei Medical University Shuang Ho Hospital.

Howard shared his experiences working in the Marshall Island. His lecture provided valuable insight on real world obstacles that can only be encountered outside of academia💡✨

🤝We were honored to welcome our Master’s Program student, Shandi, who works with Medicins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), as a guest speaker in Professor Mattia’s Global Health Organizations and Initiatives course.

Shandi delivered an insightful and engaging lecture titled “Humanitarian Actions and Health Security: How MSF Responds to Crises.” Her presentation providedvan in-depth exploration of the work MSF does in Taiwan and around the world, their framework, and also guiding principles. Her lecture gave our students a practical insight to how global health organizations work, beyond what they were taught in class. It was truly a pleasure to have her share her knowledge and experience with us☺️

We participated in another session of the Three-Universities (NYCU × OSU × TMU) Videoconference, hosted this time by National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU). This session was particularly special, as it marked the 30th edition of the joint-universities videoconference – a milestone that reflects the institutions’ enduring commitment to collaboration, knowledge exchange, and strengthening academic partnerships.

During the conference, Ms. Tran Thi Thanh Hong, a second-year Ph.D. student from the Institute of Public Health at NYCU, presented her ongoing research titled “Healthcare Utilization among Women Immigrants in Taiwan: A Population-Based Study.” Her study seeks to identify key determinants influencing healthcare accessibility among immigrant women in Taiwan and to provide insights that can inform equitable and responsive health policies.
