Дорогі друзі, раді представити новий доробок викладачів нашої кафедри.
Legal English for IP Law Students - це навчальний посібник, розроблений для англомовної підготовки студентів ОР "Магістр" освітньої програми "Інтелектуальна власність". Посібник охоплює 6 розділів, присвячених різноманітним аспектам права інтелектуальної власності, а саме авторському праву та суміжним правам, патентному праву, торговельним маркам, комерційній таємниці, географічним зазначенням та промисловому дизайну. Кожен розділ посібника супроводжується тематичним глосарієм, додатками та ключами до вправ. Навчальний посібник враховує особливості тематики спілкування, мовного та мовленнєвого матеріалів, характерних для галузі права інтелектуальної власності. Він розроблений у відповідності до компетентнісного, комунікативного та конструктивістського підходів до викладання англійської мови для спеціальних цілей.
Ми висловлюємо нашу щиру подяку кафедрі інтелектуальної власності та інформаційного права ННІ права за підтримку та сприяння у підготовці цього посібника.

13 червня 2024 р. стартував перший день дводенного офлайн воркшопу “Global Synergy through Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)”, організованого за сприяння Відділу міжнародних зв’язків КНУТШ, в якому взяли участь 4 викладачки кафедри іноземних мов ННІП: Анастасія Пожар, яка виступає в якості модераторки заходу, Олена Жигадло, Світлана Волгіна та Зінаїда Левченко.
Цей захід дозволить підвищити кваліфікацію викладачів в плані розвитку міжнародної співпраці, пошуку цікавих форм взаємодії зі студентами та закордонними колегами. Дякуємо Київський національний університет імені Тараса Шевченка за можливості професійного розвитку та чекаємо на нові педагогічні інсайти та нестандартні ідеї.

Today 4 Ph.D students of TSNUK Law School participated in an online meeting with Polish post-graduate law students from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun Law Faculty to discuss the provisions of the Proposal for a Cyber Solidarity Act. This event was preceded by a lecture of Professor Katarzyna Jachimowicz, Ph.D NCU on Implementation of EU Directives into Domestic Legal System, and is the second of the four meetings within the Virtual Student Language Club based on the formula of mini COIL project.
The aim of the Project is to hone communication, mediation and legal analysis skills in an intercultural academic environment. The participants’ discussions will result in a scientific publication. The idea and design of the project belong to Olena Zhyhadlo, Associate Professor of Foreign Languages Department, TSNUK Law School and Kamila Szczepanowska, MA, NCU, who are the Club supervisors.

We are glad to share the news that on March 7, 2024 a workshop: “Chunking for Analytical Reading and Writing” for a group of 2-year Ph.D students in Law took place within the English Academic Writing course.
The workshop was prepared and conducted by a guest-lecturer from Univdersity of Richmond School of Law, an Applied Linguistics Specialist Dr. Susan D. Dudley in cooperation with Olena Zhyhadlo, a Legal English and Academic Writing lecturer at Foreign Languages Department of Taras Shevchenko National
University of Kyiv Law School.
All the participants immensely enjoyed practising a new skill of “chunking” long passages of legislative texts, which proved to be a handy tool for processing and summarizing information for academic purposes.

Думки наших студентів: In general, if you compare education at school and university, these are two radically different things. At school, a student is often motivated not by a thirst for knowledge, but by desire of parents them to learn. Therefore, most students do not study thoroughly subjects that are not interesting to them.
At university, everything depends on you, the teachers just guide you in the right direction. What about English, it was a shock to me: we had to study legal English ourselves. I didn't know the language very well before, and here it seemed that we were learning some “new English” that didn't look like ordinary English. But at the first lesson a teacher assured us that opposite is a plus, because everyone is on equal terms, and for everyone it is something new. And so it happened. Everyone studied the legal part of English from the beginning.
Therefore, learning English at university is an opportunity to start studying this interesting language from scratch.

Думки наших студентів: What is most tricky in learning Legal English?

Hi guys. Learning languages is an extremely important component for building a successful future career. Legal English is certainly not easy to learn and considerable effort must be made to reach the appropriate level.

Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv teaches legal English at a very high level. To gain knowledge you need a teacher Tetiana Anatolievna, then learning English will be much more interesting and understandable. It is easy to communicate with her and she always treats students with understanding.

Learning legal English has its difficulties because it contains heavy vocabulary. These are not ordinary words that we use every day, but words that are directly related to jurisprudence.

The main weapon of a lawyer is the word, because you need to be able to use words to persuade people, prove your point, explain the meaning and provide facts.
At this wonderful moment I want to end my story and I would be interested to hear your opinion on this.

Думки наших студентів: Almost all students are learning English. Part of them are not enjoying learning English, but I really do, especially Legal English! English was my favorite lessons since the 1st grade. Learning new words, new phrases and grammar.
And now let’s talk about Legal English. In my view it’s another language! At my first day at the University I was so shocked when I first opened the book… Litigation, attorney, intellectual law, related rights – what are those? Is it Spanish or French? But, luckily we have a really good English teacher. The process of learning is fascinating especially when you have a good lecturer around.
What else? I really like to see a difference between my English skills in the 10th grade and now. I really like to compare them. And it’s such a pleasure for me when I see that I am better now then I was before!
Also, I want to mention, that English will help me in future! I want a job that will be related to English. I just want to help others and encourage them to learn English and Legal English.
Discovering Legal English is not only learning new words and terms, you are also learning all about jurisprudence and it’s even more interesting!

Думки наших студентів: What is the most useful in learning Legal English?

Legal English is just a description of the style of the English language used in law and related contexts. Some people have the attitude that legal English and/or legalese make things unnecessarily difficult for the average person. This is a mistaken way of looking at it. Learning legal terms is important for a career if you are studying law regardless of the country. The main reason behind this is the rise in globalization.
When you enter the market as a qualified lawyer, you will come across various clients in the country you have shifted to. Similarly, you will have to use all the legal terminologies that other lawyers use in that region.
When we speak legal English we can feel comfortable and confident in any situation and when we encounter ignorance of legal English at work, it becomes our Achilles heel.
So, it is worth thinking about learning legal English, this will increase the level of our qualification and will be useful for us if we want to connect our lives with law.

Думки наших студентів: Hello everyone. Today I would like to talk about legal English, namely what is the use of it. Undoubtedly, any science subject has its advantages, but still, what are the plus of studying this science?

Knowledge of English in the modern world is an integral part of a person, isn't it? In general, what do you think is legal English? Is it the same general English or are there any differences between them? Write your thoughts on this issue in the comments, and I will continue to tell.

And so, legal English is usually a science that includes special vocabulary, relevant statements and certain rules for its design in documents, during the conversation, etc. You may not find it interesting, to be honest, I thought so too, but I was shown how useful, and most importantly interesting and unusual can be studied. I want to thank my English teacher Trubchaninova Tatiana Anatolievna for this.

You probably already want to hear the benefits of legal English. First of all, knowledge of the language in general helps us to adapt in any country where it is present. Secondly, knowledge of legal English is mandatory for a professional lawyer, because with it, we can participate in international conferences, negotiate with representatives of other countries, work with foreign documents, be able to support a particular topic, also, so to speak, develops our thinking, imagination, and so on. In general, to know such a language is cool, especially popular nowadays, you need to always be in trend, right?

Думки наших студентів: What is good about learning International Legal English?
I would like to start with the famous phrase of Nathan Mayer - "Who owns the information, he owns the world."
If you are now thinking about starting to learn International legal English, then let's discuss all the benefits!
1) Extended English makes it easy to communicate with people around the world and share experiences with employees from other countries. Use both specialized terms and basic ones.
2) Any employer will be glad to know that he can count on you if he suddenly decides to work in the international arena.
Knowledge of English and legal English will be able to provide you with career advancement and a stable demand for your services.
3) Access to original sources! You can study the material in the original, you do not need a translation. This significantly increases the quality of perception of the material.
4) And finally, we all know the phrase “Live and learn.” And Legal English is the kind of knowledge that will surely come in handy in any area of your life.
From personal experience, I can say that even one year of studying Legal English has improved my knowledge and will improve my understanding of the entire legal system. Now, when I come across professional terms, I do not panic and do not run to the translator. I am able to figure it out myself. Thus, I can say that you will surely come across Legal English and will have to figure it out, even if you do not plan to work in law. I'm talking about signing contracts, renting a house or buying a car. So can you better prepare in advance?

Думки наших студентів: Every student at the Faculty of Law is faced with the study of international legal English, and wonders how important it will be in the future career of a lawyer and is it worth it to study hard? Exactly a year ago I got acquainted with this subject. And I will say that justice has its own language. If your goal is to become a successful specialist, then you need to know this subject. It is important for a successful lawyer to be understood not only in his office, but also in any country of the world. The legal profession requires knowledge of serious terminology, which legal texts are saturated with. Perhaps now you are asking yourself why is legal English important for law firms? And is it worth learning if you are going to work in your country? The answer is simple. Any company manager should understand that the success of his company depends on how professional his employees are.
The organization of professional English training for staff serves as a support for the further development of business in the international market. Learning English gives you the opportunity to move up the career ladder and open up new prospects for employment. Speaking about state institutions, I will answer from personal experience, I did an internship at the Parliament of Ukrainian, I had not a difficult job, but in the documentation I came across specialized terms.
It seemed to me that these were isolated cases until I started working with international organizations. At that moment, I realized how important legal English is based on everything that was said, I can conclude, «Success is not in what you have, but who you are» (Bo Bennet). I am sure that knowledge of the English language will help you reach career heights in Ukraine and abroad. Do not waste time, start now!
